FATHER PAUL M. WASHINGTON

ACEL MOORE:

Although many disagreed with the positions he took, I never heard anyone challenge the sincerity of his devotion to principle or his faith as a religious leader. There were never any scandals. No one ever impugned his honesty or integrity.

WILLIAM H. GRAY 3d:

Gray called him "the high priest of the progressive movement in Philadelphia."

CHARLES BOWSER:

?The patron saint of the inner city and the conscience of the dissident and distraught groups, which took refuge in his church.?

CHUCK STONE:

?As one of his sheep, I will forever be grateful for his gift of love that summoned me to a renewal of my life.?

BISHOP BARBARA HARRIS:

Paul stands as a witness to God?s grace in action and to the power of faith working through community to bring about peace, justice, and reconciliation.?

THE FATHER PAUL M. WASHINGTON

COMMUNITY COMMITTEE

In order to honor our shepherd, we are dedicating our efforts to changing Diamond Street to Father Paul Washington Avenue. We, his sheep in an effort to keep his legacy, memory and spirit alive have embarked on this mission; it is our duty to do so.

We welcome the energy of anyone who feels moved to participate. Our first Philadelphia Black Issues Public Forum was a success. Held on Saturday February 25 at the Church of the Advocate, attendees were treated to a look into the past by our panelists. Kudos to Walt Palmer, Butch Cottman and Reggie Schell, they told of the struggles and lessons of the 60?s and 70?s. and afforded a well informed audience the opportunity to pose pointed questions and make inspiring comments.

Everyone agreed that our youth should be our main focus. Healthy family values, education and respect for the environment, our elders and ancestors, are key in today?s struggle. We must be willing and able to train our youth to be leaders. Parents must be willing to lead by example. Get involved and vested in making our communities a better place to live.
