The New Jersey City University community continues to mourn the passing of Glenn D. Cunningham, its mayor, state senator, alumnus, and friend.

The University's Board of Trustees met on Monday, June 14th and unanimously approved a resolution recognizing the accomplishments of a devoted public official and outstanding alumnus whose untimely death is grieved by his alma mater.

We want to share the resolution with all the citizens of our City.  The resolution reads as follows:

The Honorable Glenn D. Cunningham

WHEREAS: The late Glenn D. Cunningham served as both mayor of Jersey City and state senator representing New Jersey's 31st District at the time of his sudden death on the 25th day of May 2004; and

WHEREAS:  He distinguished himself in his youth as a graduate of Snyder High School in his beloved City's school system, then in service to his country as a member of the U.S. Marine Corps, and again as a 1974 graduate of New Jersey City University -- then Jersey City State College -- who earned a bachelor of arts degree cum laude in political science; and

WHEREAS: He retired from the Jersey City Police Department in 1991 following a 24-year career in which he rose from patrolman to captain; and

WHEREAS: Mr. Cunningham served the citizens of Jersey City as a member of the City Council and the people of Hudson County as chairman of the Board of Chosen Freeholders; and

WHEREAS: He was appointed New Jersey's first African-American U.S. Marshal in 1996 and served until 2001 when he was elected the first African-American mayor of Jersey City; and

WHEREAS: Mr. Cunningham's commitment to improving the lives of the residents of his beloved city culminated in his election to New Jersey's State Senate earlier this year; be it therefore

RESOLVED: That the Board of Trustees of New Jersey City University on this 14th day of June 2004 recognizes the Honorable Glenn D. Cunningham, alumnus with honors, for his four decades of outstanding public service and significant contributions to his city, county, state and nation; and be it further

RESOLVED: That New Jersey City University extends its deepest sympathy to Mayor Cunningham's widow Sandra Bolden-Cunningham, his family, and the citizens of the City of Jersey City at this difficult and sorrowful time.
