“Cautious, careful people, always casting about to preserve their reputation and social standing, never can bring about a reform. Those who are really in earnest must be willing to be anything or nothing in the world's estimation, and publicly and privately, in season and out, avow their sympathy with despised and persecuted ideas and their advocates, and bear the consequences” … Susan B. “Mary,” asked Dawn thoughtfully one day, “what would you do if you caught your husband with another woman?” “Another woman with MY husband?” Mary thought it over.
”Let's see. I'd break her cane, shoot her guide dog, and call a cab to take her back to the institution she escaped from.”

Joe heard a rumor that his father, grandfather and great-grandfather
had all walked across the lake on their 21st birthdays.
So, on his 21st birthday, Joe and his good friend Brian headed out to
the lake. "If they did it, I can too!" he insisted. When Joe and
Brian arrived at the lake, they rented a boat and began paddling.
When the got to the middle of the lake, Joe stepped off of the side
of the boat ... and almost drowned.
Furious and somewhat ashamed, he and Brian headed for home. When Joe
arrived back at the family farm, he asked his grandmother for an
explanation. "Grandma, why can I not walk on water like my father,
and his father, and his father before him?"
The feeble old grandmother took Joe by the hands, looked into his
eyes, and explained, "That's because your father, grandfather, and
great-grandfather were born in January ... you were born in July, dear."

A member of the Cherokee Nation was a special guest at an elementary school. He talked to the children about his tribe and its traditions, then shared with them this fun fact: "There are no swear words in the Cherokee language."
One boy raised his hand, "But what if you're hammering a nail and accidentally smash your thumb?"
"That," the man answered, "is when we use your language."

Be an African American Hero to a Child with Sickle Cell Disease!

Through a one-of-a-kind program, the American Red Cross and local childrens hospitals are improving care for children with sickle cell disease -- and we need your help! Sickle cell disease is an inherited disease that affects more than 90,000 people in the United States, ninety percent of whom are of African descent.

There is no cure for sickle cell disease, but good medical care, including blood transfusions, can help manage and prevent the pain and

serious complications of the disease.

What You Can Do To Help

Blood donors are the real heroes in this story because some patients with sickle cell disease need many units of blood every month! But if the blood is not a very close match, the patient may reject the blood and a source of help and hope will be gone. This condition, called alloimmunization, can be fatal.

The best matches for these patients will come from African American donors.

African American donors who want to help can choose to give blood for a child with sickle cell disease by using a special blue tag available at all Red Cross blood drives and donor centers in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware.

If you are African American, please share your good health with a child who has sickle cell disease by doing something simple, easy, and safe by giving blood.

Community College of Philadelphia's Act Now/Act 101 Program

The Act Now/Act 101 Program is seeking your assistance in the development of the following new opportunities for their Leadership Learning Community students.

Mentoring Program: It is important for students to meet professionals, outside of the Act Now/Act 101 Program, who have completed college and who would be available to offer guidance and support as they pursue their academic and career goals.

Informational Interviews: While some of our students have chosen majors to pursue others are still undecided. It is helpful for them to meet professionals in the fields they are considering. The time commitment for Informational Interviews is minimal. The Act Now/Act 101 Program will keep a list of individuals representing a variety of professions. Interested students will contact the representatives to schedule an interview. Interviews may be conducted by telephone or in person and should take no longer than an hour.

For application or more information, please email Erika Hernandez ehernandez@ccp.edu

"Speaking Truth to Action"

Spoken Word' movement mentors at-risk males.

Brother to Brother, Boys to Men Youth Mentoring Club  ...because we are our brother's keepers.

As Philadelphia's homicide rate continues to climb, a local businessman, entrepreneur and 'spoken word' poets are coming together

to 'speak truth to action' with a mentoring program that they feel will change lives; save lives of young African American males in the city.

WHAT: a "Mentoring" Club, for males only between the ages of 13 and 18 and adult males, providing nurture, guidance and role-models for at-risk youth. The club provides awareness, self-love activities and a positive environment to build healthy relationships.
WHEN: Wednesday evenings 5:00-7:30 PM (Ongoing [since 07-25] weekly)
Where: Dowling's Palace 1310 N. Broad Street Phila.,  PA 19121 (Next to Blue Horizon) N. Broad Street at Thompson  215-236-9888

WHY: (Shyster): "Because it's long overdue!" Promoters of this mentoring club say that it is NOT a "Lecture" format, not a "scared straight" program; instead, spoken-word artists with a burden for the community are coming together to offer young African American males a positive environment to interact with each other and community role-models. This is an attempt to curb violence and a practical way to put an end to the senseless violence and bloodshed that tarnishes Philadelphia's image. "We need 'real-men' Mentors, who have big hearts and a little

time to spend with a young man who needs it--badly!" said Sam Gamon. "Because, after all 'we are our brothers' keepers".

FINDING A JOB IN PHILLY JUST GOT A LITTLE BIT EASIER

If you’ve ever looked at a job listing and thought, "I’d be perfect for this job, if only...," you understand the discouragement a lot of

job seekers in Philadelphia feel. Understanding these barriers, the employment volunteers at WhatThePeopleREALLYThink.com have launched a free tool that helps jobseekers look for jobs and

apply online, http://phila.jobamatic.com.

Positions range from Banquet Server to Call Center Manager.

When it comes to meeting the qualifications for a job, is there any flexibility? That depends on the employer, but in most cases, the answer is yes. Certainly, it helps to understand how your own experience and needs match up to what the employer wants and is willing to offer, which isn’t always an easy task, thanks to the obscure language typical of many job listings. http://phila.jobamatic.com

SpotLight ON OUR EFFORTS

In honor of Women’s History Month, Spotlight will feature amazing women changing their circumstances.

Tucker, C. DeLores (1927-2005)

Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on October 4, 1927 to Reverend Whitfield and Captilda Nottage, C. DeLores Tucker attended the highly competitive Philadelphia High School for Girls and then matriculated to Temple University where she studied finance and real estate. In 1951 she married businessman William Tucker and became an activist who at the time was counted among the 100 most influential black Americans.

A successful realtor during the 1950s, Tucker became involved in civil rights activities.  In the 1960s she served as an officer in the Philadelphia NAACP and worked closely with the local branch president and activist Cecil Moore to end racist practices in the city’s post offices and construction trades.  Tucker gained national prominence when she led a Philadelphia delegation on the celebrated Selma to Montgomery march with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.  By the decade’s end, Tucker’s expertise as a fund raiser for the NAACP, coupled with her Democratic Party affiliation, enabled her to be appointed chair of the Pennsylvania Black Democratic Committee.

Her selection by Mayor James H.J. Tate to serve on the Philadelphia Zoning Commission in 1968 was the first of several prestigious political appointments, including vice chair of the Pennsylvania Democratic Party (1970) and in the following year, Secretary of State of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.  In 1976 she became vice chair of the National Association of Secretaries of State, and in 1984 chair of the Democratic National Committee’s Black Caucus.

By the 1990s Tucker became a highly vocal opponent of the salacious lyrics and sexual innuendos associated with “gangsta rap.”  She joined conservative Republican Bill Bennett and launched a national campaign against Time Warner, Inc. for supporting and sustaining artists and companies profiting from rap music.  Tucker died on October 12, 2005.

Everybody, everybody got a book of rhymes, poetry, words, sentences and thoughts. Based off the underground release of Success Story: In Search of Hip Hop, Carrying the Wait: a book of rhymes

is the written, lyrical expression of a young man bearing the weight of his people and their experience. As we all are waiting for something to come into our lives, this book tells the story of a boy becoming a man carrying the weight, but not waiting for something to come to him while learning how to live life. This is hip-hop, the story of my life.

THE HOUSE OF UMOJA, INC.:

APPROACHING FORTY AND “THINK GREEN PEACE”

Since its founding in 1968 by Queen Mother Falaka Fattah and her husband Mr. David Fattah, the House Of Umoja, Inc. has positively shaped the minds and souls of approximately 3,000 young men; successfully negotiated a peace pact among leaders of gangs in Philadelphia in 1974 which brought to an end bloody and deadly gang conflicts that had plagued the nation’s fourth largest city; and rekindled community spirit and energized a public school system in its leadership and organizing role for the 2007 Million Father March in the City of Philadelphia as it moves children in the City of Philadelphia to commit to nonviolence by signing the Imani Pledge.

As it approaches its 40th anniversary, the House Of Umoja, Inc. continues to create key “pieces of the puzzle” to not only positively shaping the minds and souls of the City’s youth but also beautifying and empowering the neighborhoods in which they reside by “Think Green Peace”.

The House Of Umoja, Inc.’s “Think Green Peace” Campaign -- which consists of several components that include, but are not limited to, transforming vacant lots into gardens that are abloom with vegetables and flowers; and engaging the youths, adults, and business community in the task of preparing the vacant lots for planting in the Carroll Park section of West Philadelphia -- will culminate with the First Philadelphia Collard Green Cultural Festival For 2008 which is scheduled to occur in July 2008.

“The House Of Umoja, Inc.’s ‘Think Green Peace’ Campaign is creating key ‘pieces of the puzzle’ to beautifying our community, educating our young about our environment, and moving our community to self-sufficiency,”  Queen Mother Falaka Fattah explained.

So, how can you get involved in the House Of Umoja, Inc.’s “Think Green Peace” Campaign?

Contact Queen Mother Falaka Fattah at the House Of Umoja, Inc. at (215) 473-5893 or via e-mail at:  falakafattah@aol.com.

An in-person introductory meeting will be scheduled by the Act Now Program in February. Mentors would then be then expected to communicate via email, telephone or in person with their Act Now student once during the month of March and once during the month of April.
