Be an African American
Hero to a Child with Sickle Cell Disease!
Through a one-of-a-kind
program, the American Red Cross and local children’s hospitals are improving care
for children with sickle cell disease -- and we need your help! Sickle cell
disease is an inherited disease that affects more than 90,000 people in the
United States, ninety percent of whom are of African descent.
There is no cure for
sickle cell disease, but good medical care, including blood transfusions, can
help manage and prevent the pain and
serious complications of
the disease.
What You Can Do To Help
Blood donors are the real
heroes in this story because some patients with sickle cell disease need many
units of blood every month! But if the blood is not a very close match, the
patient may reject the blood and a source of help and hope will be gone. This
condition, called alloimmunization, can be fatal.
The best matches for these
patients will come from African American donors.
African American donors
who want to help can choose to give blood for a child with sickle cell
disease by using a special blue tag available at all Red Cross blood drives
and donor centers in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware.
If you are African
American, please share your good health with a child who has sickle cell
disease by doing something simple, easy, and safe by giving blood.

The Act Now/Act 101
Program is seeking your assistance in the development of the following new
opportunities for their Leadership Learning Community students.

Program, who have completed college and who would be available to offer
guidance and support as they pursue their academic and career goals.
Informational Interviews:
While some of our students have chosen majors to pursue others are still
undecided. It is helpful for them to meet professionals in the fields they
are considering. The time commitment for Informational Interviews is minimal.
The Act Now/Act 101 Program will keep a list of individuals representing a
variety of professions. Interested students will contact the representatives
to schedule an interview. Interviews may be conducted by telephone or in
person and should take no longer than an hour.

"Speaking Truth to
Action"
Spoken Word' movement mentors at-risk males.
Brother to Brother, Boys
to Men Youth Mentoring Club ...because we are our
brother's keepers.
As
Philadelphia's homicide rate continues to climb, a local businessman,
entrepreneur and 'spoken word' poets are coming together
to 'speak truth to action'
with a mentoring program that they feel will change lives; save lives of
young African American males in the city.
WHAT: a "Mentoring"
Club, for males only between the ages of 13 and 18 and adult males, providing
nurture, guidance and role-models for at-risk youth. The club provides awareness,
self-love activities and a positive environment to build healthy
relationships.
WHEN: Wednesday evenings 5:00-7:30 PM (Ongoing [since 07-25]
weekly)
Where: Dowling's Palace 1310 N. Broad Street
Phila., PA 19121 (Next to Blue Horizon) N. Broad Street at
Thompson 215-236-9888
WHY: (Shyster): "Because
it's long overdue!" Promoters of this mentoring club say that it is NOT
a "Lecture" format, not a "scared straight" program;
instead, spoken-word artists with a burden for the community are coming together
to offer young African American males a positive environment to interact with
each other and community role-models. This is an attempt to curb violence and
a practical way to put an end to the senseless violence and bloodshed that
tarnishes Philadelphia's image. "We need 'real-men' Mentors, who have
big hearts and a little
time to spend with a young
man who needs it--badly!" said Sam Gamon. "Because, after all 'we
are our brothers' keepers".

This Week…
Dear Philadelphia Faith
Leader,
Are you interested in a dialogue on Gender and Sexuality in the context of
variable faith traditions? See below
*/Interfaith series at Lutheran Seminary /*
*/will tackle ‘Gender and Sexuality,’ ‘War and Peace’/*
/Series on ‘Tough Texts’ aims to dispel distrust/
/among Christians, Jews and Muslims/
PHILADELPHIA, PA – “Tough Texts” is the title of a
spring Interfaith Dialogue Series set for three Sunday afternoons in
March and April from 2 to 5 pm at The Lutheran Theological Seminary at
Philadelphia (LTSP). The series will involve Christian, Muslim and
Jewish presenters each day, and a rich opportunity for conversation with
the presenters and in small groups. Clergy, Rabbis and Imams and
concerned lay leaders are invited.
Each day the presenters will focus on foundational scriptures that can
be “tough texts” in interfaith discussions because some see them as
controversial, ambiguous, or subject to a broad range of
interpretations. They’ll connect their “tough texts” to a subtheme for
the day: “Identity and the Other” (March 30); “Gender and Sexuality”
(April 6) and “War and Peace” (April 13). At the outset of each day,
each tradition’s presenter will speak for 20 minutes. The presenting
panel will take clarifying questions briefly. Small interfaith groups
will discuss what they have heard and frame questions for the panel,
then come back into the plenary to pose their questions. The day will
conclude with a light supper and opportunity for informal conversation.
(The “Identity and the Other” subtheme focuses in part on “to what
extent is my faith the one true faith?”)
Planning co-sponsors with the seminary are the Interfaith Center of
Greater Philadelphia, the Neighborhood Interfaith Movement (Mt. Airy),
The Institute for Interreligious, Intercultural Dialogue at Temple
University, the Philadelphia Dialog Forum, and Reconstructionist
Rabbinical College of Wyncote, PA.
For the April 6 topic on “Gender and Sexuality” the Christian presenter
will be the Rev. Dr. Wil Gafney, associate professor of Hebrew and Old
Testament at LTSP; the Jewish presenter will be Dr. Laura Levitt,
coordinator of the Greater Philadelphia Women’s Consortium and director of
the Jewish Studies Program at Temple University, where she teaches in the
Religion department and the Women’s Studies program; and the Muslim presenter
will be Dr. Constance Carter, who has held adjunct faculty teaching posts at
Temple and Villanova universities as well as at the College of New Jersey.
Dr. Carter has more than 40 years of experience in social work and career
development.
For the April 13 topic on “War and Peace” the Christian presenter will
be Dr. Paul Mojzes, Professor of Religious Studies at Rosemont College; the
Jewish Presenter will be Rabbi Leonard Gordon, Rabbi at the Germantown Jewish
Centre in Philadelphia’s Mt. Airy section, who has taught Comparative
Religion and Rabbinic Literature at Columbia and Brown universities; and the
Muslim presenter will be Dr. Khalil Malik, a Lansdale, PA physician involved
with The Peace Center in Bucks County and a member of the National Executive
Board of the Ahmadiyya Movement in Islam, USA.
The cost is $65 to attend all three sessions, or $25 per session to
attend one or two sessions in the series. Student discounts and
scholarships are available. Information on student discounts and
registration is available at www.Ltsp.edu/interfaith
<http://www.ltsp.edu/interfaith>.
Questions or requests for information
may be addressed to Staples at Mstaples@Ltsp.edu
<mailto:Mstaples@Ltsp.edu> or 215/248-7352.
The program will be held in Benbow Hall of The Brossman Center each Sunday on
the seminary’s campus at 7301 Germantown Avenue in Philadelphia.
Publication quality photos of the presenters are available on the Web:

FINDING A JOB IN PHILLY JUST GOT A LITTLE BIT
EASIER
If
you’ve ever looked at a job listing and thought, "I’d be perfect for
this job, if only...," you understand the discouragement a lot of
job
seekers in Philadelphia feel. Understanding these barriers, the employment
volunteers at WhatThePeopleREALLYThink.com have launched a free tool that
helps jobseekers look for jobs and
apply
online, http://phila.jobamatic.com.
Positions
range from Banquet Server to Call Center Manager.
When it comes to meeting
the qualifications for a job, is there any flexibility? That depends on the
employer, but in most cases, the answer is yes. Certainly, it helps to
understand how your own experience and needs match up to what the employer
wants and is willing to offer, which isn’t always an easy task, thanks to the
obscure language typical of many job listings. http://phila.jobamatic.com

of each month, First Person Arts will showcase new work and works-in-progress
presented by the artists themselves to an audience eager to get an inside
look at the creative process. Writers, photographers, documentary
film-makers, painters and sculptors will put both their work and their
methods on display, demonstrating how they turn real-life drama into
compelling works of art.
First Person Arts is accepting applications from artists on a rolling basis at
salons@firstpersonarts.org. You can find a Salon
overview and application at www.firstpersonarts.org <http://www.firstpersonarts.org/other_programs-contests.php>

THE HOUSE OF UMOJA, INC.:
APPROACHING FORTY AND
“THINK GREEN PEACE”
Since its founding in 1968
by Queen Mother Falaka Fattah and her husband Mr. David Fattah, the House Of
Umoja, Inc. has positively shaped the minds and souls of approximately 3,000
young men; successfully negotiated a peace pact among leaders of gangs in
Philadelphia in 1974 which brought to an end bloody and deadly gang conflicts
that had plagued the nation’s fourth largest city; and rekindled community
spirit and energized a public school system in its leadership and organizing
role for the 2007 Million Father March in the City of Philadelphia as it
moves children in the City of Philadelphia to commit to nonviolence by
signing the Imani Pledge.
As it approaches its 40th
anniversary, the House Of Umoja, Inc. continues to create key “pieces of the
puzzle” to not only positively shaping the minds and souls of the City’s
youth but also beautifying and empowering the neighborhoods in which they
reside by “Think Green Peace”.
The House Of Umoja, Inc.’s
“Think Green Peace” Campaign -- which consists of several components that
include, but are not limited to, transforming vacant lots into gardens that
are abloom with vegetables and flowers; and engaging the youths, adults, and
business community in the task of preparing the vacant lots for planting in
the Carroll Park section of West Philadelphia -- will culminate with the
First Philadelphia Collard Green Cultural Festival For 2008 which is
scheduled to occur in July 2008.
“The House Of Umoja,
Inc.’s ‘Think Green Peace’ Campaign is creating key ‘pieces of the puzzle’ to
beautifying our community, educating our young about our environment, and
moving our community to self-sufficiency,”
Queen Mother Falaka Fattah explained.
So, how can you get
involved in the House Of Umoja, Inc.’s “Think Green Peace” Campaign?

Community College of
Philadelphia's Act Now/Act 101 Program
The Act
Now/Act 101 Program is seeking your assistance in the development of the
following new opportunities for their Leadership Learning Community students.
Mentoring Program: It is important for students to meet professionals,
outside of the Act Now/Act 101 Program, who have completed college and who
would be available to offer guidance and support as they pursue their
academic and career goals. An in-person introductory meeting will be
scheduled by the Act Now Program in February. Mentors would then be then
expected to communicate via email, telephone or in person with their Act Now
student once during the month of March and once during the month of April.
Informational Interviews: While some of our students have chosen majors to
pursue others are still undecided. It is helpful for them to meet
professionals in the fields they are considering. The time commitment for
Informational Interviews is minimal. The Act Now/Act 101 Program will keep a
list of individuals representing a variety of professions. Interested
students will contact the representatives to schedule an interview.
Interviews may be conducted by telephone or in person and should take no
longer than an hour.
For application or more information, please email Erika Hernandez ehernandez@ccp.edu
