Education Camps sponsored by Delta Air Lines.

one-week program is to introduce interested youth to the world of aviation by

AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES ANNOUNCES SUMMER YOUTH CAMPS FOR 2008
CONSERVATION
LEADERSHIP SCHOOLS:
JUNE 22-28; and JULY 6-12
If your ideal school is one where the
classrooms include over 7,000 acres of forest, fields, wetlands, and streams,
and where learning about our environment goes hand-in-hand with having fun
and meeting new friends, then the Penn State Conservation Leadership School
(CLS) is for you. It’s not a recreational summer camp, although lots of fun
is definitely on the agenda. It’s a RE-Creation experience, leading you to
learn, to live, and to think critically about sustaining our environment.
In the unique setting at The
Pennsylvania State University’s Stone Valley Recreation Area near State
College, Pa., students between the ages of 15 and 18 learn about the
environment and conservation during a one-week program that emphasizes
field-based, hands-on learning, group problem solving, and leadership.
This year’s program will include a
special session on leadership developed by the PA Rural Leadership Program
(RULE) and an interactive ropes course challenge that will foster cooperation
and teamwork. The 2008 curriculum will focus on important natural
resource issues including:
- Analyzing your hometown drinking water
Participants will bring a water sample from home and learn how to
test for various pollutants that may occur in Pennsylvania water
supplies.
- Deer population management and habitat
conservation
Representatives from the Quality Deer Management Association (QDMA)
will discuss strategies on how to achieve biologically and socially
balanced deer herds within existing environmental, social, and legal
constraints.
- Recycling: Beyond the Bin
Students will get a behind- the-scenes look at the recycling process
and learn how and why this essential “R” (reduce, reuse, and recycle)
plays a key role in our waste management practices.
- What is wood?
Participants may walk away from CLS with a new appreciation for one
of the earth’s most versatile and sustainable resources.
- “Green” Buildings
Students will tour some of Penn State’s newest and award-winning
“green” buildings, which bring together new technologies, sustainable
materials, and creative designs.
Conservation Leadership School is
being offered twice this summer, June 22-28 and July 6-12. The same
program is offered for each week. During their stay at Stone Valley,
the students will work in teams with the faculty and staff from the School of
Forest Resources, and representatives of the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat
Commission, the Pennsylvania Game Commission, the Department of Environmental
Protection, the Pennsylvania Rural Leadership Program, and the Department of
Conservation and Natural Resources.
Scholarships are available from
participating Conservation Districts in Pennsylvania and area sportsmen clubs
for students representing their district at CLS. For a listing of

The Act Now/Act 101
Program is seeking your assistance in the development of the following new
opportunities for their Leadership Learning Community students.
Mentoring Program: It is
important for students to meet professionals, outside of the Act Now/Act 101
Program, who have completed college and who would be available to offer
guidance and support as they pursue their academic and career goals.
Informational Interviews:
While some of our students have chosen majors to pursue others are still
undecided. It is helpful for them to meet professionals in the fields they
are considering. The time commitment for Informational Interviews is minimal.
The Act Now/Act 101 Program will keep a list of individuals representing a
variety of professions. Interested students will contact the representatives
to schedule an interview. Interviews may be conducted by telephone or in
person and should take no longer than an hour.

Health’s SAFE program has openings for new clients. In our SAFE program, we
provide parents of children aged birth through 5 years with the information,
resources and support they need to raise healthy and happy children. A peer
and professional staff conduct services. Spanish-speaking case managers are
available.
Services include:

In-home visits Help in obtaining medical, pediatric and well-baby
care;

Accompaniment to medical appointments and other appointments;
·
Connecting participants to supportive community resources to
meet identified needs;

Health and nutrition information, resources and written handouts;
·
Incentives- baby items, parent-child activity books, home safety
items, and others;
·
Assisting participants in securing health insurance or other
benefits;

Supporting participants in engaging in healthy lifestyle practices,
such as smoking cessation, exercise and good adult and child nutrition;

“Hands-on” support, such as grocery shopping to show participants how
to purchase good quality nutritional food at reasonable prices; and

Positive parenting and health education workshops, which are open to
everyone in the community.

The disturbing pattern of violence, particularly
violent acts by and against youth continues at a horrific pace in
Philadelphia. News reports of youth
violence have become commonplace in Philadelphia and the country.
This summer Stop The Madness-Stop The Violence
Inc., a non profit organization which strives to teach alternatives to
negative behavior and violence will sponsor a “Youth Summer Basketball
League” this league will have two age divisions (11-12-13) and (14-15-16)
league play will begin on June 24, 2008. An afternoon community event will
take place at the Tustin Recreation Center located at 5901 Columbia Ave. (60th
& Lancaster) on June 21, 2008 between 4:00-8:30 pm in celebration of the
league and community involvement. We are asking for community and grass-root
organizations to celebrate with us on June 21, 2008 e in a variety of
activities which included (2) exhibition basketball games, community
information tables , poetry, spoken word, and live entertainment.
The
goal of Stop The Madness-Stop The Violence Inc. is to provide wholesome,
Positive activities for youth which provide an environment to encourage a
sense of ethical, social and neighborhood responsibility through community
service and involvement. This is
guided by three basics beliefs: that
violence is preventable, peace is possible and both are best achieved through

City-wide campaign ends
with poetry event for at-risk teen males and mentorship drive
The M.A.N. Campaign is a social
service marketing campaign for the recruitment of mentors.
The creation of the
campaign was a response to the need to decrease the rate of imprisonment,
truancy, and senseless violence amongst African American males under
twenty-five years of age in Philadelphia.
Originally a six-month
effort, The M.A.N. Campaign which began in July 2007 was extended until
Spring 2008.
The campaign comes to an
end with two concurrent events:
The MISsed Education
Poetry Slam for truant teens and a M.A.N. Mentorship Drive for male mentors.
On Saturday, June 7, 2008,
The M.A.N. Campaign in conjunction with the Department of Truancy and
Prevention will host an event for the truant young men they purpose to help.
The campaign and its supporters believe that there is a benefit to bringing
young men together to hear stories from professional men that have beat the
odds.
The MISsed Education
Poetry Slam will take place at the Philadelphia Daily News Building from Noon
to 3PM.
The headliner poet for the
The MISsed Education Poetry Slam is Philadelphia-born, Tony Award Winner, HBO
Def Jam Poet Black Ice. Additional speakers include National Author and
Columnist Solomon Jones along with M.A.N. Advocates: Author Mister Mann
Frisby and FOX 29 Sports Reporter Bill Vargus. Youth from The Enterprise
Center's Project Great Potential will also share stories about how they are
overcoming the odds by focusing on entrepreneurship.

Grants Announced: Demonstration Projects Targeting Dislocated Workers
The
recently announced grants from the Employment and Training Administration are
intended for organizations who offer retraining and job placement services to
dislocated workers. The grants are intended for State Workforce Agencies,
including those in the territories of Puerto Rico, Virgin Islands, Guam,
Northern Mariana Islands and American Samoa.
State
Workforce Agencies (SWAs), including those from the territories listed above,
are eligible to apply. Each SWA needs to identify the One-Stop Career Center
and local workforce investment board and that would be participating in the

MusicLink Foundation, working as a pipeline organization for the

Kent Cooke Foundation,

seeking music students in financial need who may qualify for the

Kent Cooke Young Scholars Award.

is a scholarship program that specifically applies to
CURRENT
SEVENTH GRADE students.
Students
do not necessarily have to be enrolled in the MusicLink program to apply.

musical potential is a factor in the selection process, students with a

Scholarship For Service
(SFS) is a unique program designed to increase and strengthen the cadre of
federal information assurance professionals that protect the government’s
critical information infrastructure. This program provides scholarships that
fully fund the typical costs that students pay for books, tuition, and room
and board while attending an approved institution of higher learning.
Additionally, participants receive stipends of up to $8,000 for undergraduate
and $12,000 for graduate students. The scholarships are funded through grants
awarded by the National Science Foundation NSF.

The 2008 Philadelphia Fatherhood Festival
Fathers
from all backgrounds, from over seven states will converge on the
Pennsylvania Convention center for the third year in a row for the 2008
Philadelphia Fatherhood Festival. The mission is to become better parents.
This year, more than over 400 men will gather on June 7th for a
one of a kind event at the PA Convention Center. This FREE
event aims to bring together all kind of fathers and father figures- those of
in intact or blended families, married fathers, single fathers, stepfathers,
fathers-to-be, new fathers, grandfathers, adoptive fathers, and, older
brothers. Fathers of all races, cultures, backgrounds, religions, creeds, and
color will attend.
It is being organized by Daddy UniverseCity and sponsored by The United Way
of SouthEastern Pennslyvania, Prudential Ins, Clear Channel Radio/ Power99
& WDAS, The Parent Leadership Academy, Department of Human Services
(DHS)/Division of Community Based Prevention Services (DCBPS), Office of
Truancy and Delinquency Prevention, EPIC Stakeholder Project, Real Men Cook
of Phila, Proud Poppa, and other organizations.
Our Keynote Speaker for this event will be famed Attorney Jeffrey M.Leving,
Author of Fathers Rights.
Our
2008 Fatherhood Award Recipient this year is Brian Dawkins of the
Philadelphia Eagles.
This
conference will bring together a panel of city council, judges, state
workers; state representatives and psychologists for a premier roundtable
event entitled the Fight for Equality. This roundtable will
look to resolve the barriers that men face raising children. “It is time to
direct the complaints to the people we voted in power to resolve them,” says
Joel Austin, President/CEO of Daddy UniverseCity Inc.
Tracks that will be discussed include: Fatherhood & Parenting, Healthy
Relationships/Communications, Money Management, Life Skills, and Health &
Wellness. These are the foundations of parenthood.
An
estimated 33 percent of children in the United States live away from their
biological fathers. When children grow up without fathers, they suffer
incarceration, drugs, and crime. Women are more likely to have teenage
pregnancies, be unwed mothers or face child abuse. The problems of crime and
violence in our city is a direct result of the lack of positive male
participation in child development, it is time to address the problem.

way to challenge the illegal and immoral embargo against the people of Cuba.

around the US and other countries and learn why they decided to join the
Caravan. Almost 50 years after the Cuban Revolution, the US government
prohibits trading relations with Cuba and denies Americans their right to
travel there. The Caravan defies
these prohibitions by raising humanitarian aid and transporting it to
Cuba. It has become a beacon in the
affirmation of basic human rights and justice. As we make the final plans to
support the Caravan's efforts, we need your help to make this event a

"Back to Basics” Main
Event"
The
event will be held the day before Father's Day, on June 14, 2008 at
Fairhill Park on 4th St and Lehigh Ave
beginning at 2 pm and ending
at 6 pm.
The premise for the event
is to pay homage to being an "Hombre" (means "man" in
Spanish) a Padre (a father), an Abuelo (a grandfather) and a Padrino (a term
in Spanish used for a godfather or a father like figure).
It is the goal of the committee
to create an environment filled with Compadres (meaning my son’s godfather or
protector).
Man-to-Man conversations
will take place promoting the important role that Latino Men will play on
changing the current status of the community.
The theme for the day will
be to get back to the way it used to be, "Back to Basics".
Where people took care of people, when respect of people and property were
the norm, when you truly were your brother's keeper!
An
environment will be created, where organizations will set up information
tables and will present on stage opportunities for Latino Men to get involved
through volunteering. Volunteers will be recruited to coach a sports team,
join a town watch, be a block captain, mentor a youth, become a cub scout
leader and much more.

Community College of
Philadelphia's Act Now/Act 101 Program
The Act
Now/Act 101 Program is seeking your assistance in the development of the
following new opportunities for their Leadership Learning Community students.
Mentoring Program: It is important for students to meet professionals,
outside of the Act Now/Act 101 Program, who have completed college and who
would be available to offer guidance and support as they pursue their
academic and career goals. An in-person introductory meeting will be
scheduled by the Act Now Program in February. Mentors would then be then
expected to communicate via email, telephone or in person with their Act Now
student once during the month of March and once during the month of April.
Informational Interviews: While some of our students have chosen majors to
pursue others are still undecided. It is helpful for them to meet
professionals in the fields they are considering. The time commitment for
Informational Interviews is minimal. The Act Now/Act 101 Program will keep a
list of individuals representing a variety of professions. Interested
students will contact the representatives to schedule an interview.
Interviews may be conducted by telephone or in person and should take no
longer than an hour.
