"Speaking Truth to Action" Spoken Word' movement mentors at-risk males.
Brother to Brother, Boys to Men Youth Mentoring Club
...because we are our brother's keepers.
As
Philadelphia's homicide rate continues to climb, a local businessman,
entrepreneur and 'spoken word' poets are coming together
to
'speak truth to action' with a mentoring program that they feel will change
lives; save lives of young African American males in the city.
WHAT: a "Mentoring" Club, for males only between the ages of 13
and 18 and adult males, providing nurture, guidance and role-models for
at-risk youth. The club provides awareness, self-love activities and a
positive environment to build healthy relationships.
WHEN: Wednesday evenings 5:00-7:30 PM (Ongoing [since 07-25]
weekly)
Where: Dowling's Palace 1310 N. Broad Street
Phila., PA 19121 (Next to Blue Horizon) N. Broad Street at
Thompson 215-236-9888
WHY: (Shyster): "Because it's long overdue!" Promoters of this
mentoring club say that it is NOT a "Lecture" format, not a
"scared straight" program; instead, spoken-word artists with a
burden for the community are coming together to offer young African American
males a positive environment to interact with each other and community
role-models. This is an attempt to curb violence and a practical way to put
an end to the senseless violence and bloodshed that tarnishes Philadelphia's
image. "We need 'real-men' Mentors, who have big hearts and a little
time
to spend with a young man who needs it--badly!" said Sam Gamon.
"Because, after all 'we are our brothers' keepers".

Black History Showcase
FIFTH
ANNUAL BLACK HISTORY SHOWCASE RETURNS TO PHILADELPHIA
Pennsylvania
Convention Center hosts annual celebration of African American history
The
Black History Showcase, the nation’s premier showcase of African American
history, will take place in Philadelphia, February 16 and 17, 11 a.m. to 7
p.m. at the Pennsylvania Convention Center.
This
annual Showcase was started in 2004 as a way to promote a greater awareness
and appreciation of African American history. It features a diverse mix
of educational exhibits and activities that use “Real People, Real Artifacts
and Real Stories” to present the extraordinary achievements and events in
Black history.
The
2008 Black History Showcase will feature interactive and inspiring exhibits
that cover a broad range of subjects. The main attraction is the
“Salute to the History of Blacks in the Military.” This includes a special
area of military exhibits that pay tribute to the Tuskegee Airmen, Buffalo
Soldiers, WWII Black Navy Veterans, Triple Nickels (the first Black parachute
unit), Red Ball Express (the courageous Black transportation unit), USS Mason
DE 529 (the first all Black crew), the Montford Point Marines (the first
Black Marines) and the first Black Navy diver Carl Brashear. Surviving
members of these groups will be available to provide first hand accounts of
their experiences. Living history performers from the 22nd
and 37th United States Colored Troops along with the Ladies of the
Civil War will present Civil War and Revolutionary War stories. There
will also be a display of military artifacts that include medals, documents,
photos and gear. The screening area will show the award winning
American Legacy DVD, “Blacks In The Military,” “On Freedom’s Wings” and
“Proudly We Served.”
Returning
exhibits include The Lest We Forget Museum of Slavery and Jim Crow
memorabilia. They will return with new artifacts and copies of their award
winning DVD. Also returning is the Not Just A Hoe exhibit featuring
slave handcrafted furniture and pottery from plantations in Summerville,
South Carolina. The Quest for Freedom exhibit will highlight
Philadelphia’s role in the anti-slavery and Underground Railroad
movement. The Negro Baseball League exhibit will return with its’
display of antique baseball equipment and surviving members of the
Philadelphia Stars.
On
Saturday at 2 p.m., America’s networking guru and
best-selling author George Fraser will discuss and sign his newly released
book “CLICK: Ten Truths for Building Extraordinary Relationships.”
Mr.
Fraser is attempting to make history as the first African American to make
the New York Best seller list as an author of a general market business
book. The Black Professionals News, National Alliance of Market
Developers and the Philadelphia Black Public Relations Society are sponsoring
his appearance. Immediately following Mr. Fraser, there will be a
Spoken Word and Living History Performers Showcase. This features
poets sharing their history related poems and living history performers doing
monologues on famous African Americans. On both days attendees can
purchase Black memorabilia and collectibles from participating merchants.
Everett
Staten, Founder of the Black History Showcase says his inspiration comes from
the fact that “the history of Black people in America is one of unbelievable
resilience and achievement, however, in most instances our contributions are
not included in the presentation of history. Our history remains the
greatest story that’s never been told. The Black History Showcase is
committed to making OUR STORY part of HIS STORY.” Dawn Jones, President
of Philadelphia Black Public Relations Society adds, “We are proud to be a
part of such a life-changing event which celebrates the accomplishments of
our African American forefathers.”
The
2008 Black History Showcase is hosted once again by the Pennsylvania
Convention Center located in Philadelphia at 12th and Arch Street.
Ahmeenah Young, Executive Vice President and General Manager of the
Convention Center Authority stated, “Philadelphia is recognized as the
nation’s most historic city and we are delighted to partner with Everett in
presenting such an educational and historically relevant event. The
Black History Showcase has become an integral part of the mosaic that
represents Philadelphia and it is also an essential component of our February
hospitality and tourism attractions.”
The
Showcase hours are from 11a.m. to 7 pm. both days. Admission is FREE
and everyone is welcome. For more information visit: www.blackhistoryshowcase.org.

FINDING A JOB IN PHILLY JUST GOT A LITTLE BIT
EASIER
If
you’ve ever looked at a job listing and thought, "I’d be perfect for
this job, if only...," you understand the discouragement a lot of
job
seekers in Philadelphia feel. Understanding these barriers, the employment
volunteers at WhatThePeopleREALLYThink.com have launched a free tool that
helps jobseekers look for jobs and
apply
online, http://phila.jobamatic.com. Positions range
from Banquet Server to Call Center Manager.
When it comes to meeting
the qualifications for a job, is there any flexibility? That depends on the
employer, but in most cases, the answer is yes. Certainly, it helps to
understand how your own experience and needs match up to what the employer
wants and is willing to offer, which isn’t always an easy task, thanks to the
obscure language typical of many job listings. http://phila.jobamatic.com

GRANTS And
SCHOLARSHIPS
The Philadelphia
Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity is once again seeking applicants
for its annual Hiliary H. Holloway, Esquire Scholarship Award program. The
chapter's scholarship program, named after the late Hiliary H. Holloway,
Esquire, a past Grand Polemarch and Laurel Wreath recipient of Kappa Alpha
Psi Fraternity, as well as a
longtime
member of the Philadelphia Alumni Chapter, is designed to aid promising
minority male students in the public high schools of Philadelphia who are
planning to matriculate in college following their graduation from high
school. Applications and further info can be obtained from the
student's Principal or guidance counselor.
All
applications must be postmarked by March 15, 2008 to be considered. The
amount of the scholarship award is $2,000. A total of four $2,000
scholarships will be awarded in 2008. The fraternity uses the scholarship
grants to enhance the opportunities for minority males to acquire a college
education. The organization seeks to reach and assist those young men who
have demonstrated academic promise, but have not necessarily accumulated the
highest averages. Additionally, the need for financial assistance is
fundamental. Students who meet these criteria should contact their Principal
or guidance counselor about this scholarship opportunity immediately. An
application can also be downloaded from the Philadelphia Alumni Chapter's web
site:

Merchants Fund Grants for
Small Businesses (Feb 15)
The Merchants Fund issued the first round grants this fall to small
businesses in Philadelphia.
The next grant deadline is Friday, February 15, 2008 (postmarked). The
applications have been modified since the last grant cycle and the web site
has detailed information about the attributes of successful grants.
The first grant cycle was competitive. TMF funded approximately half of the
applications submitted. It is anticipated that the next cycle will be equally
competitive. Most, but not all, of the grants made were the result of strong
partnerships with community organizations such as community development
corporations, merchant associations and other non-profit agencies. The
sponsor’s act both as advocates as well as hands-on agents for helping
merchants achieve their goals and oversee grant requirements. The members of
the Program Committee responded to the power of enabling community
development goals through individual merchants.

ON OUR EFFORTS
In
honor of Black History Month, the
next three editions of “Spotlight” will feature local groups that have made a
significant impact on the Philadelphia community.
Revolutionary Action Movement
RAM was
organized in 1962 by Muhammad Ahmad (known as Max Stanford until 1970). As a
student at Central State College in Wilberforce, Ohio, Ahmad studied black
nationalism and got involved in black radical politics. In the fall of 1962,
after discussions with several African American radicals, including the
personal encouragement of Malcolm X, Ahmad formed the first RAM cadre. RAM’s
first major action came in 1963 when the RAM group in Philadelphia, along
with the local NAACP branch, demonstrated against discrimination by building
trades unions. Following these demonstrations, Ahmad began to organize RAM
groups in urban areas and on several college campuses. By 1966 and 1967, RAM
included students and intellectual activists and had developed a following
among urban residents.
The
Revolutionary Action Movement(RAM), an all black membership organization, is
described as a highly militant secretive organization which follows the
Chinese-oriented Marxist Leninist line and believes in replacing the
capitalistic system with socialism. This group was organized in the winter of
1963 by a group of blacks who supported Robert F.Williams, a Negro fugitive
from justice in voluntary exile in Cuba. The leaders of the RAM encouraged
all black people to follow this organization, but only the members of the
organization seemed to be followers. The leadership of the March of
Washington refused to follow them and refused their support. In 1966, RAM
formed the Jamaica Rifle and Pistol Club for the purpose of holding firearms
practice. http://foia.fbi.gov/foiaindex/revolutionaryactionmovement.htm

presented by the artists themselves to an audience eager to get an inside
look at the creative process. Writers, photographers, documentary
film-makers, painters and sculptors will put both their work and their
methods on display, demonstrating how they turn real-life drama into
compelling works of art.
First Person Arts is accepting applications from artists on a rolling basis
at salons@firstpersonarts.org. You can find a Salon
overview and application at www.firstpersonarts.org <http://www.firstpersonarts.org/other_programs-contests.php>
. Join us every 2nd Wednesday, 7:00 pm at the Gershman Y
(Broad and Pine) Admission: $5-10.
