No great idea in its beginning can ever be within the law. How can it be within the law? The law is stationary. The law is fixed. The law is a chariot wheel which binds us all regardless of conditions or place or time.

There was once a man from the city who was visiting a small farm, and
during this visit he saw a farmer feeding pigs in a most
extraordinary manner. The farmer would lift a pig up to a nearby apple tree, and the pig would eat the apples off the tree directly.
The farmer would move the pig from one apple to another until the pig was satisfied, then he would start again with another pig. The city man watched this activity for some time with great astonishment.
Finally, he could not resist saying to the farmer, "This is the most inefficient method of feeding pigs that I can imagine. Just think of
the time that would be saved if you simply shook the apples off the tree and let the pigs eat them from the ground!"
The farmer looked puzzled and replied, "What's time to a pig?"

I was sitting with my young granddaughter when she asked, "Did God make you, Granddad?"
"Yes, God made me," I answered.
A few minutes later, she asked me, "Did God make me too?"
"Yes, He did," I answered.
For a few minutes, she seemed to be studying me, as well as her own reflection in the mirror, while I wondered what was running through her mind. At last she spoke up.
"You know, Granddad," she said, "God's doing a lot better job lately."

"Speaking Truth to Action" Spoken Word' movement mentors at-risk males.

Brother to Brother, Boys to Men Youth Mentoring Club  ...because we are our brother's keepers.

As Philadelphia's homicide rate continues to climb, a local businessman, entrepreneur and 'spoken word' poets are coming together

to 'speak truth to action' with a mentoring program that they feel will change lives; save lives of young African American males in the city.

WHAT: a "Mentoring" Club, for males only between the ages of 13 and 18 and adult males, providing nurture, guidance and role-models for at-risk youth. The club provides awareness, self-love activities and a positive environment to build healthy relationships.
WHEN: Wednesday evenings 5:00-7:30 PM (Ongoing [since 07-25] weekly)
Where: Dowling's Palace  1310 N. Broad Street Phila.,  PA 19121 (Next to Blue Horizon) N. Broad Street at Thompson  215-236-9888

WHY: (Shyster): "Because it's long overdue!" Promoters of this mentoring club say that it is NOT a "Lecture" format, not a "scared straight" program; instead, spoken-word artists with a burden for the community are coming together to offer young African American males a positive environment to interact with each other and community role-models. This is an attempt to curb violence and a practical way to put an end to the senseless violence and bloodshed that tarnishes Philadelphia's image. "We need 'real-men' Mentors, who have big hearts and a little

time to spend with a young man who needs it--badly!" said Sam Gamon. "Because, after all 'we are our brothers' keepers".

FINDING A JOB IN PHILLY JUST GOT A LITTLE BIT EASIER

If you’ve ever looked at a job listing and thought, "I’d be perfect for this job, if only...," you understand the discouragement a lot of

job seekers in Philadelphia feel. Understanding these barriers, the employment volunteers at WhatThePeopleREALLYThink.com have launched a free tool that helps jobseekers look for jobs and

apply online, http://phila.jobamatic.com. Positions range from Banquet Server to Call Center Manager.

When it comes to meeting the qualifications for a job, is there any flexibility? That depends on the employer, but in most cases, the answer is yes. Certainly, it helps to understand how your own experience and needs match up to what the employer wants and is willing to offer, which isn’t always an easy task, thanks to the obscure language typical of many job listings. http://phila.jobamatic.com

GRANTS And SCHOLARSHIPS

The Philadelphia Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity is once again seeking applicants for its annual Hiliary H. Holloway, Esquire Scholarship Award program. The chapter's scholarship program, named after the late Hiliary H. Holloway, Esquire, a past Grand Polemarch and Laurel Wreath recipient of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, as well as a

longtime member of the Philadelphia Alumni Chapter, is designed to aid promising minority male students in the public high schools of Philadelphia who are planning to matriculate in college following their graduation from high school.  Applications and further info can be obtained from the student's Principal or guidance counselor.

All applications must be postmarked by March 15, 2008 to be considered. The amount of the scholarship award is $2,000. A total of four $2,000 scholarships will be awarded in 2008. The fraternity uses the scholarship grants to enhance the opportunities for minority males to acquire a college education. The organization seeks to reach and assist those young men who have demonstrated academic promise, but have not necessarily accumulated the highest averages.  Additionally, the need for financial assistance is fundamental. Students who meet these criteria should contact their Principal or guidance counselor about this scholarship opportunity immediately. An application can also be downloaded from the Philadelphia Alumni Chapter's web site:
http://www.phillykappas.org.

Additionally, participants receive stipends of up to $8,000 for undergraduate and $12,000 for graduate students. The scholarships are funded through grants awarded by the National Science Foundation NSF.

SpotLight ON OUR EFFORTS

In honor of Black History Month,  the next three editions of “Spotlight” will feature local groups that have made a significant impact on the Philadelphia community.

Among the many projects inspired by the study groups held at John Churchville’s Freedom Library (see the February 8th edition) in the mid 1960’s was:

THE NEW FREEDOM THEATER

Founded by John E. Allen, Jr. in 1966, Freedom Theatre is Pennsylvania's oldest African-American theatre. In 1968 Robert E. Leslie joined Freedom Theatre and founded the Performing Arts Training Program in 1971. After the death of John E. Allen, Jr.  in 1992, nationally acclaimed director Walter Dallas became Freedom's Artistic Director.

In 1993, Mr. Dallas created Freedom Rep, the professional performing company of Freedom Theatre. Since then, Freedom has grown from a small community theatre to an award-winning, nationally recognized regional theatre, only the second African-American theatre to have joined the prestigious League of Resident Theatres (LORT).

In 2001, after receiving multiple accolades including awards for Best Drama, Original Music, Set Design, Choreography, Lead Actress in a Drama, Supporting Actress in a Musical, Costume Design, and Direction, Freedom Theatre was named "Theatre of the Year" by the Philadelphia Weekly.

Today, Freedom Theatre consists of three components: multiple Barrymore Award-winning Freedom Repertory Theatre, (Curtis V. Hodge, Associate Producer); Barrymore Award-winning Performing Arts Training Program, (Patricia Scott Hobbs, Director); and, as of 2001, Facilities Rental (Gail Leslie, Director). These components work hand-in-hand to provide excellence in theatre, stellar training in the performing arts, and outstanding comprehensive customer service and community access.

Freedom Theatre is located on Philadelphia's Avenue of the Arts, in the historic Edwin Forrest Mansion at 1346 North Broad Street, Philadelphia, PA, 19121. The 299-seat state-of-the-art John E. Allen, Jr. Theatre opened February 19, 2000.

"...I was lucky enough to visit Freedom. I was astounded by the range of ambition, the depth of community impact, and the passion of the Board and staff. Clearly, Freedom is speaking to deep community needs and desires, and the work they are providing is filling a valuable place in the American, not merely the Philadelphia, landscape." --Ben Cameron, Executive Director, Theatre Communications Group, Inc.

"Dallas is at the vanguard of a Renaissance, leading an explosion of African American dramatic theatre, and is one of the most in-demand directors in the nation. Dallas has turned Philadelphia's New Freedom Theatre into one of the finest regional companies." --The Hartford Courant

ARTS FOR AWARENESS

First Person Arts launches First Person Salons at the Gershman Y

It was standing-room-only for every single one of First Person Arts’ notorious Story Slams in 2007, and now First Person Arts is bringing that same energy and enthusiasm to a new series of memoir and documentary-arts events: First Person Salons at the Gershman Y.  On the second Wednesday of each month, First Person Arts will showcase new work and works-in-progress presented by the artists themselves to an audience eager to get an inside look at the creative process.  Writers, photographers, documentary film-makers, painters and sculptors will put both their work and their methods on display, demonstrating how they turn real-life drama into compelling works of art.

First Person Arts is accepting applications from artists on a rolling basis at salons@firstpersonarts.org.  You can find a Salon overview and application at www.firstpersonarts.org <http://www.firstpersonarts.org/other_programs-contests.php> .  Join us every 2nd Wednesday, 7:00 pm at the Gershman Y (Broad and Pine)  Admission: $5-10.

The PHILADELPHIA BLACK PUBLIC ISSUES FORUM began in honor of the late
fr. Paul M. Washington, former rector of the Church of the Advocate at
18th and fr. Paul M. Washington Avenue in North Philadelphia. The
Forum, like Father Washington, is a provider and legitimizer of public
space for the free expression of dissident Black voices on public
issues central to our communities. The Forum's purpose is to provide
a public space and an opportunity to be heard to Black persons and
groups who bring non-traditional approaches to ways of thinking and
organizing focused on solving pressing community problems. Proud
