A man is driving by an insane asylum, when his wheel falls  off his car. Upon discovering that his lug nuts have all come off, he curses  loudly and bemoans his bad fortune. An inmate peering through the gate calmly  suggests that the man remove one lug nut from each of the remaining wheels  until he can get to an auto store to purchase some new ones. The man, amazed,  blurted out “But I thought you were insane.” To which the inmate replied, “I  am crazy, but I’m not stupid.” ...Redd Foxx

Word Of The Week

brackish\BRAK-ish\, Somewhat  salty. Distasteful; unpalatable.

Greetings Coalition Family!

Although our initial intent was to have fewer sites for  this year’s Week of Peace observation, it seems we will have more sites than  last year’s number ten. We applaud those of you who have stepped up to offer  your sites and participation in this annual event, which seems to have  impacted the community positively. According to the Philadelphia Police Department,  crime has been down during our events. All the credit goes to those local  groups who put this thing together every year.

There is still time if your group or organization wishes  to be represented at one or more of the sites (to be listed in a future  edition).

Another autobiographical piece for Black History Month on  page 13, check it out.

Due to the length of some of the announcements, some will  be detailed in our group The Coalition, Inc. Group  as will be noted. Thank you for your continued support.

We want to hear  from you! The Coalition, Inc. website is open! This is our website,  let us build it together! Let us know what you think.

I offer you peace. I offer you love. I offer you  friendship. I see your beauty. I hear your need. I feel your feelings. My wisdom  flows from the Highest Source. I salute that Source in you. Let us work  together for unity and love.” Mohandas Ghandi

City offers respite to parents of  children with MH issues

The Philadelphia  Department of Behavioral Health is offering a children’s respite program for  parents who have a child or children ages 6-16 receiving mental health  services and who need a Saturday afternoon, a full day or an overnight off.

There are two  programs to choose from.  A Saturday  afternoon respite program is offered at Boys and Girls Clubs in four  different areas of the city from noon-5pm.   All participants receive a free membership to the Boys and Girls Club.

The Family Care  Respite Program matches children with an appropriate foster family who will  provide weekend respite services. The respite families are trained, licensed  and have all state required child serving clearances.  Children can stay a full day, overnight or  for the weekend.

Pre-registration is  required for both programs.

To request  additional information and a registration form call 215-685-4734 or  215-685-4746 or 215-685-5502.

AFTER  SCHOOL PROGRAM

In Philadelphia there are many latchkey children,  children without role models, sedentary children, and Generation I (internet)  children spending hours in front of a screen (TV and/or computer). ALL of  these children have hidden or untapped talents and potential.

The After School Program handout www.cap4kids.org/philadelphia  on Cap4Kids http://www.cap4kids.org/philadelphia/parent_handouts/after_school_programs_camps.html  lists hundreds of activities to help children and teens realize their  potentials and at the same time decrease their risk taking behaviors. From  Squash to Tennis, Horse Back Riding to Training for Marathons, Mural Art  making to Music recording.

The programs are many and the need is many.  PLEASE help families in need find specific activities that interest our  children and use the Cap4Kids After School handout to help bridge the gap  between families in need and the social service agencies that serve them.

Thanks.

BLACK  HISTORY MONTH

As promised, we are featuring bio’s and auto bio’s of local folk who  made many sacrifices to challenge the corrupt systems they encountered.

Eugene ‘Freedom Tree’ Dawkins

At the age of 15 or 16 years old, I was exposed to things  that would change my life forever.

One day my sister’s boyfriend took me around the corner to  the wall at Girard College where I got an instant understanding about who and  what I was. I saw hundreds of policemen along the 2-½ mile wall, which  insulated Girard College from the surrounding community. The police were all  over every inch of the wall. They were nasty, rude and insulting. (The NAACP,  under the leadership of Cecil B. Moore, was attempting to break the will of  Steven Girard that stipulated only ‘poor white male orphans’ were allowed to  attend this institution.)

I had been raised by my grandmother, who always prayed and  told me stories of her hardships and mishaps where she was raised in the  South. They worked from sun up to sun down and sometimes longer. Her life was  very hard and infuriating. She wanted my brother, sister and me, to have a  better life, she really wanted us to be prepared for the tough trials of life  and its’ demands. My grandmother was completely blind in one eye and the other  eye was going bad. But, like most grandmothers, she could see things clearly,  more clearly than us kids. She was my first protection in life. Being her  eyes and ears kept me close to her on a daily basis. For hours we used to sit  in her window watching, listening and talking about things happening on the  streets and around the wall of Girard College. She told us of protection we  needed in the house.  She also told us  of her hopes and fears. She told us why we were here in America and why she  was so grateful for being here. She, her mother, father and grandparents were  bought here as slaves, something I knew nothing about. Now the do’s and  don’ts of my life, where to go or where to not go were taught to me in my  home. A demonstration around the wall would break the will. I was faced with  do or don’t. By the time I got around to Girard College, my grandmother had  passed on to glory.

The marchers were told on a daily basis about the meaning  of slavery and what was going on down South and what was happening around the  wall known as Girard College. We were also told about a will left by a white  man named Steven Girard who said he wanted the college to be left for orphans  of white fatherless boys. The powers that be at the time were hell-bent on  carrying that will out at any cost.

During the march I met Cecil B. Moore, who was commanding  and personable. He became like a father figure to me. I saw him on television  before I met him. Cecil was like other people I met, but Cecil was much  smarter than any of them and he spoke his mind, he was concerned and wanted  to help people. He said he knew all about me and wanted to take some of the  anger I had and turn it into something good and that way I could stay out of  trouble. He did something that older people didn’t do. He talked to me and he  didn’t yell, just talked. He said something to me that no one else ever did.  He put his hand on my shoulder and he said, “ I need you to help us carry out  the job we have to do because if we don’t get it done it will not get done. I  know you are a hard worker and I can depend on you.” About that time, we  started marching everyday around the wall at about 8am to 10pm or until the  police harassment ended. They would come across the barricade and attack the  marchers for no reason at all. Cracking black folks heads and other mean or  spiteful things they could do to us. Sometimes they just called us names like  rapists, thieves, communists, niggers and threatened our families. They would  turn their motorcycles toward the curb and just raced the motors causing some  of us to be overcome with carbon monoxide poisoning. Sometimes the police  would follow us to our homes or to our jobs and sit in their cars for a  while. They would usually cool down around 10pm or shortly after. That was  the police.

If not for the young people of the community, the  preachers and Georgie Woods, I don’t know how we would have made it happen.  The help we got from Georgie Woods and from my very good friend Cecil B.  Moore got me out of jail many times when I was arrested. We could and did  depend on Cecil and every time Cecil came through for us. Little did we know  we were the right people for the job. As the days turned into weeks and weeks  turned into months, the crowds got smaller and smaller. Radio station, WPEN  had some people on the air called Friends of Girard College. They announced  that they had a couple thousand people and they would fight until the end.  They wanted to keep Girard College lily-white with no blacks, no niggers.  They wanted it as white as snow. No Blacks. Just when we thought that all our  marching and all our prayers were for nothing. Cecil announced we would take  it to court. We were told Martin Luther King, jr. was coming to the wall to  be with us. He came and walked the wall with us. On that Day we broke the  will. Dr. King indeed walked the wall with us. I got locked up again.

This is the story of one freedom fighter.

Juneteenth, or the  "19th of June", recognizes June 19, 1865, in Galveston, TX, when  Union General Gordon Granger announced freedom for all slaves in the  Southwest. This was the last major vestige of slavery in the United States  following the end of the Civil War. This occurred more than two and a half  years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued by President Abraham  Lincoln. Upon the reading of General Order #3 by General Granger, the former  slaves celebrated jubilantly, establishing America's second Independence Day  Celebration and the oldest African-American holiday observance.

Juneteenth is now  recognized as a state holiday or state holiday observance in Texas, Oklahoma,  Florida, Delaware, Idaho, Alaska, Iowa, California, Wyoming, Missouri,  Connecticut, Illinois, Louisiana, New Jersey, New York, Colorado, Arkansas,  Oregon, Kentucky, Michigan, New Mexico, Virginia, Washington, Tennessee,  Massachusetts, North Carolina, West Virginia, South Carolina and Vermont. In  2003, the District of Columbia passed legislation to recognize Juneteenth as  a district holiday observance. Many more states, including Utah, Alabama,  South Dakota, Pennsylvania, Montana, Wisconsin and Maryland have recognized  Juneteenth through state legislative resolutions, Gubernatorial Proclamations  and current state holiday observance legislation.

"Dr. Myers is  also the leader of the National Juneteenth Holiday Campaign," states  Wilma Newton. "We wlll have petitions available at the reception for  everyone to send to President Barack Obama to make Juneteenth a National  Holiday Observance in America. The public is invited to come out and be a  part of history."

Green Economy

House of Umoja Green Peace Project

Program Overview:

The HOU program is designed to encourage  at-risk youths to engage in civic and entrepreneurial activities that provide  exposure to the principles of a green economy. The “Green  Peace Project” promotes an  environment that demonstrably shows the correlation between; preservation and  responsibility; and economic development and community esteem. The program  seeks as a mission to establish a multitude of gardens throughout the city of  Philadelphia, utilizing discarded or dysfunctional space. The land is  cultivated and developed to yield marketable provisions and provide  communities healthy options. The gardens include seating areas and sculptured  universal peace symbols to provide communities with peaceful eco-friendly  space. The program advances the proposition of using community-connectivity  to spur economic growth and progress.

Goals:

The three-month series teaches  participants; the study of pedology; the tenets of agriculture;  entrepreneurial dexterity; and community prosperity. Participants will gain  knowledge in self-sufficiency, self-determination, ethics and business.

Facts:

Urban Agriculture

50% of the world’s population lives in  cities.

800 million people are involved in urban  agriculture world-wide and contribute to feeding urban residents.

Low income urban dwellers spend between 40%  and 60% of their income on food each year.

By 2015 about 26 cities in the world are  expected to have a population of 10 million or more. To feed a city of this  size – at least 6000 tons of food must be imported each day.

Do you or your  organization have an idea how to help your neighbors in these difficult  economic times but need a small grant to get your idea moving? First United Methodist Church of  Germantown (FUMCOG) is looking to support projects that promote social  justice and peace in the local community. The foundation is  accepting applications for the following grant programs:

The Learning &  Leadership Grants program provides opportunities for teachers, education  support professionals, and higher education faculty and staff to engage in  high-quality professional development and lead their colleagues in  professional growth.  Grants to  individuals fund participation in professional development experiences such  as summer institutes and action research. Grants to groups fund collegial  study, including study groups, action research, lesson study, and mentoring  experiences for faculty or staff new to an assignment. The grant amount is  $2,000 for individuals and $5,000 for groups.

The Student Achievement Grants program  provides grants of $5,000 each to improve the academic achievement of  students by engaging in critical thinking and problem solving that deepen  knowledge of standards-based subject matter. The work should also improve  students’ habits of inquiry, self-directed learning, and critical reflection.  Proposals for work resulting in low-income and minority student success with  honors, advanced placement, and other challenging curricula are particularly  encouraged. Grant funds may be used for resource materials, supplies,  equipment, transportation, software, and scholars-in-residence.

Applicants must be  practicing U.S. public school teachers in grades K-12, public school  education support professionals, or faculty and staff at public higher  education institutions.

Colleges Set Asset Development Conference

The Philadelphia  Higher Education Network for Neighborhood Development, a consortium of 36  colleges and universities in the greater Philadelphia area, will hold its  2009 annual conference on

Friday, February  27th at

Chestnut Hill  College in Philadelphia.

PHENND works to  build the capacity of its member institutions to develop mutually beneficial,  sustained, and democratic community-based service-learning partnerships. The  consortium actively seeks to revitalize local communities and schools and  foster civic responsibility among the region's colleges and universities.

The theme of this  year’s conference is financial asset development.  The conference will cover topics such as Volunteer Income Tax  Assistance, public benefits campaign, financial education and much more. All  of these topics are things needed to help low-income communities become  financially self-sufficient and the conference will focus on how colleges and  universities can play a role in this process.

The keynote speaker  for the conference will be Karen Gross, President of Southern Vermont  College.  Gross has had a long and  distinguished career as an academic and community development leader. For  more than two decades, she was a Professor of Law at New York Law School  where she specialized in consumer finance and over-indebtedness.

In addition, she  was, until recently, the President and CEO of an educational non-profit  organization that designs, implements and studies programs to improve the  financial literacy skills of consumers called The Coalition for Consumer  Bankruptcy Debtor Education.

Workshops to be  held at the conference include Volunteer Income Tax Assistance in the  Delaware Valley, Financial Education Opportunities at VITA Sites,  Philadelphia Food Stamp Enrollment Campaign, Financial Education Clubs for  College Campuses, Foreclosures in Philadelphia, The Benefit Bank &  National Student Partnerships Model, and the Workforce Development Initiatives  at the University of Pennsylvania.

Registration fees  range from $25 to $50.

LIVE UNITED: Food for Thought

This Valentine's  Day share your heart in a way that helps feed our community. Join United Way  as we work to keep local food banks stocked with food for those in need  throughout the region.

Traditionally, the  cold winter months following the holidays are when donations decline and the  food supplies drop. With over 120,000 local adults and children, many of whom  never thought that they would be reaching out for assistance, being forced to  eat less or skip meals because they cannot afford enough food - now is the  time to share your heart with a Valentine that really makes a difference.

Share Your Heart -  Send a Valentine

Join United Way's

LIVE UNITED - Food  for Thought project.

A Valentine gift of  $20 will help purchase a bag of groceries -- a $100 Valentine fills a  shopping cart and $1,000 fills ten carts with much needed food supplies. Send  a Food for Thought Valentine to let your loved ones know that you shared your  heart to feed someone in need. The issue is critical -- the need is urgent --  the time is now to share your heart.

Buy a Valentine  that makes a difference, be a part of
