Greetings Coalition Family! Although our initial intent was to have fewer sites for this year’s Week of Peace observation, it seems we will have more sites than last year’s number ten. We applaud those of you who have stepped up to offer your sites and participation in this annual event, which seems to have impacted the community positively. According to the Philadelphia Police Department, crime has been down during our events. All the credit goes to those local groups who put this thing together every year. There is still time if your group or organization wishes to be represented at one or more of the sites (to be listed in a future edition). Another autobiographical piece for Black History Month on page 13, check it out. Due to the length of some of the announcements, some will be detailed in our group The Coalition, Inc. Group as will be noted. Thank you for your continued support. We want to hear from you! The Coalition, Inc. website is open! This is our website, let us build it together! Let us know
what you think. FOR OUR CHILDREN

corrupt systems they encountered. Eugene ‘Freedom Tree’ Dawkins At the age of 15 or 16 years old, I was exposed to things that would change my life forever. One day my sister’s boyfriend took me around the corner to the wall at Girard College where I got an instant understanding about who and what I was. I saw hundreds of policemen along the 2-½ mile wall, which insulated Girard College from the surrounding community. The police were all over every inch of the wall. They were nasty, rude and insulting. (The NAACP, under the leadership of Cecil B. Moore, was attempting to break the will of Steven Girard that stipulated only ‘poor white male orphans’ were allowed to attend this institution.) I had been raised by my grandmother, who always prayed and told me stories of her hardships and mishaps where she was raised in the South. They worked from sun up to sun down and sometimes longer. Her life was very hard and infuriating. She wanted my brother, sister and me, to have a better life, she really wanted us to be prepared for the tough trials of life and its’ demands. My grandmother was completely blind in one eye and the other eye was going bad. But, like most grandmothers, she could see things clearly, more clearly than us kids. She was my first protection in life. Being her eyes and ears kept me close to her on a daily basis. For hours we used to sit in her window watching, listening and talking about things happening on the streets and around the wall of Girard College. She told us of protection we needed in the house. She also told us of her hopes and fears. She told us why we were here in America and why she was so grateful for being here. She, her mother, father and grandparents were bought here as slaves, something I knew nothing about. Now the do’s and don’ts of my life, where to go or where to not go were taught to me in my home. A demonstration around the wall would break the will. I was faced with do or don’t. By the time I got around to Girard College, my grandmother had passed on to glory. The marchers were told on a daily basis about the meaning of slavery and what was going on down South and what was happening around the wall known as Girard College. We were also told about a will left by a white man named Steven Girard who said he wanted the college to be left for orphans of white fatherless boys. The powers that be at the time were hell-bent on carrying that will out at any cost. During the march I met Cecil B. Moore, who was commanding and personable. He became like a father figure to me. I saw him on television before I met him. Cecil was like other people I met, but Cecil was much smarter than any of them and he spoke his mind, he was concerned and wanted to help people. He said he knew all about me and wanted to take some of the anger I had and turn it into something good and that way I could stay out of trouble. He did something that older people didn’t do. He talked to me and he didn’t yell, just talked. He said something to me that no one else ever did. He put his hand on my shoulder and he said, “ I need you to help us carry out the job we have to do because if we don’t get it done it will not get done. I know you are a hard worker and I can depend on you.” About that time, we started marching everyday around the wall at about 8am to 10pm or until the police harassment ended. They would come across the barricade and attack the marchers for no reason at all. Cracking black folks heads and other mean or spiteful things they could do to us. Sometimes they just called us names like rapists, thieves, communists, niggers and threatened our families. They would turn their motorcycles toward the curb and just raced the motors causing some of us to be overcome with carbon monoxide poisoning. Sometimes the police would follow us to our homes or to our jobs and sit in their cars for a while. They would usually cool down around 10pm or shortly after. That was the police. If not for the young people of the community, the preachers and Georgie Woods, I don’t know how we would have made it happen. The help we got from Georgie Woods and from my very good friend Cecil B. Moore got me out of jail many times when I was arrested. We could and did depend on Cecil and every time Cecil came through for us. Little did we know we were the right people for the job. As the days turned into weeks and weeks turned into months, the crowds got smaller and smaller. Radio station, WPEN had some people on the air called Friends of Girard College. They announced that they had a couple thousand people and they would fight until the end. They wanted to keep Girard College lily-white with no blacks, no niggers. They wanted it as white as snow. No Blacks. Just when we thought that all our marching and all our prayers were for nothing. Cecil announced we would take it to court. We were told Martin Luther King, jr. was coming to the wall to be with us. He came and walked the wall with us. On that Day we broke the will. Dr. King indeed walked the wall with us. I got locked up again. This is the story of one freedom fighter. Juneteenth, or the "19th of June", recognizes June 19, 1865, in Galveston, TX, when Union General Gordon Granger announced freedom for all slaves in the Southwest. This was the last major vestige of slavery in the United States following the end of the Civil War. This occurred more than two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued by President Abraham Lincoln. Upon the reading of General Order #3 by General Granger, the former slaves celebrated jubilantly, establishing America's second Independence Day Celebration and the oldest African-American holiday observance. Juneteenth is now recognized as a state holiday or state holiday observance in Texas, Oklahoma, Florida, Delaware, Idaho, Alaska, Iowa, California, Wyoming, Missouri, Connecticut, Illinois, Louisiana, New Jersey, New York, Colorado, Arkansas, Oregon, Kentucky, Michigan, New Mexico, Virginia, Washington, Tennessee, Massachusetts, North Carolina, West Virginia, South Carolina and Vermont. In 2003, the District of Columbia passed legislation to recognize Juneteenth as a district holiday observance. Many more states, including Utah, Alabama, South Dakota, Pennsylvania, Montana, Wisconsin and Maryland have recognized Juneteenth through state legislative resolutions, Gubernatorial Proclamations and current state holiday observance legislation. "Dr. Myers is also the leader of the National Juneteenth Holiday Campaign," states Wilma Newton. "We wlll have petitions available at the reception for everyone to send to President Barack Obama to make Juneteenth a National Holiday Observance in America. entrepreneurial activities that provide exposure to the principles of a green economy.
The “Green Peace Project” promotes an environment that demonstrably shows the
correlation between; preservation and responsibility; and economic development and
community esteem. The program seeks as a mission to establish a multitude of
gardens throughout the city of Philadelphia, utilizing discarded or dysfunctional
space. The land is cultivated and developed to yield marketable provisions and
provide communities healthy options. The gardens include seating areas and
sculptured universal peace symbols to provide communities with peaceful
eco-friendly space. The program advances the proposition of using
community-connectivity to spur economic growth and progress. Goals: The three-month series teaches participants; the study of pedology; the tenets of
agriculture; entrepreneurial dexterity; and community prosperity. Participants will
gain knowledge in self-sufficiency, self-determination, ethics and business. Facts: Urban Agriculture 50% of the world’s population lives in cities. 800 million people are involved in urban agriculture world-wide and contribute to
feeding urban residents. Low income urban dwellers spend between 40% and 60% of their income on food
each year. By 2015 about 26 cities in the world are expected to have a population of 10 million or
more. To feed a city of this size – at least 6000 tons of food must be imported each
