Greetings Coalition Family! Although our initial intent was to have fewer sites for this year’s Week of Peace observation, it seems we will have more sites than last year’s number ten. We applaud those of you who have stepped up to offer your sites and participation in this annual event, which seems to have impacted the community positively. According to the Philadelphia Police Department, crime has been down during our events. All the credit goes to those local groups who put this thing together every year. There is still time if your group or organization wishes to be represented at one or more of the sites (to be listed in a future edition). Another autobiographical piece for Black History Month on page 16, check it out. Due to the length of some of the announcements, some will be detailed in our group The Coalition, Inc. Group as will be noted. Thank you for your continued support. We want to hear from you! The Coalition, Inc. website is open! This is our website, let us build it together! Let us know
what you think. The multitude which does not reduce itself to unity is confusion exemplified. FOR OUR CHILDREN
In Philadelphia, and listed on the www.cap4kids.org/philadelphia website, there are so many resources for families in need that it is sometimes overwhelming to cover many of the issues that our families face as we try to link families in need with the social service agencies that serve them. To help, under the Resource tab, http://www.cap4kids.org/philadelphia/resources.html , we have added Cap4Kids Parent Questionnaires that you can post in your office, exam rooms, schools, and community centers to let families know what issues we can help them with in their community. Sixty 11th & 12th grade students gain “job readiness” training, especially for the “Green Job” sector. Students will work two hours per day, four days/week Monday-Thursday. March 09, - May 01, 2009 American Cities Foundation also seeks businesses to host students. Cost to businesses is only the time spent mentoring. “This is a small investment cost for assisting with a program that will shape and develop a significant portion of the 21st century workforce, regardless of the industry of the business”, says Program Director Alexander Houston. Philadelphia GREEN SCHOOLS PROGRAM http://www.ase.org/section/program/greenschl/spirit/pennsylvania ------------ NATIONAL RADIO ADDRESS ON FATHERHOOD Men Discuss Children, Education, Future "Courageous Conversations" talk radio is moving discussions on education like a delivery driver behind schedule. And, there exists a "can't stop, won't stop" attitude, between the show's producer/hostess, Hafeeza Majeed and co-host (Street Positive), when it comes to addressing the "state of education" and engaging students, parents and schools in narrowing the academic achievement gap. On February 15, the show aired a special segment to highlight the growing dropout rate occurring among high school girls. A number of callers shared their concerns and discussed issues contributing to this alarming trend; estimates suggest that 1 in 4 girls are not graduating high school. A major contributor to the academic performance of a child directly relates to paternal involvement. On February 22, (5pm PST/8pm EST) "Courageous Conversations" will feature "Fathers and Their Children's Education: Are You In, Or Are You Out?" This national broadcast will allow fathers to dialogue for answers related to helping students achieve academic success, as well as, assist in closing the academic achievement gap. The show is particularly interested in hearing from mentorship and fatherhood groups, dads looking for answers and support, black fraternities, students with absent fathers and mothers looking for answers to increase a father's role in education. Those wanting to be guests should contact (909) 895-3765. To link to "Courageous Conversations" visit http://www.streetpositive.com. "Courageous Conversations" has also announced that after the show, it will send a list to President Obama's administration of those groups who called in to participate. As, this will make the President's office aware of those helping to make a difference at the community level. Additionally, a special guest youth poet will be asked to share spoken word as part of the show's ongoing commitment to showcase "What's Right With Our Youth?" Media contact: Terry Boykins - (909) 895-3765. ----------- Last Call for Applications for INTERNATIONAL YOUNG ECO-HERO AWARD!!! fought for the rights and privileges of Black folk wherever he saw injustice being
perpetuated. He started out as a young man and continued until his health, begin to
fail him. Ulysses walked the picket line at Girard College and others tirelessly. He
walked the line at Girard College until it was integrated. He started his human rights
struggle at the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE). Ulysses was involved with the
NAACP, SNCC, and the Girard College picketers, later to become known as The
Young Militants. Ulysses demonstrated at the construction of the Philadelphia State Office Building
and the 30th Street Post Office for job inclusion for Blacks. He worked tirelessly and
without thought of his personal safety. Though beaten and jailed by the Philadelphia
police he was undeterred and steadfast in his efforts to gain the rights and benefits of
full citizenship for all African-American citizens and people of color. By Deborah Mills Batchelor ----- Juneteenth, or the "19th of June", recognizes June 19, 1865, in Galveston, TX, when Union General Gordon Granger announced freedom for all slaves in the Southwest. This was the last major vestige of slavery in the United States following the end of the Civil War. This occurred more than two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued by President Abraham Lincoln. Upon the reading of General Order #3 by General Granger, the former slaves celebrated jubilantly, establishing America's second Independence Day Celebration and the oldest African-American holiday observance. Juneteenth is now recognized as a state holiday or state holiday observance in Texas, Oklahoma, Florida, Delaware, Idaho, Alaska, Iowa, California, Wyoming, Missouri, Connecticut, Illinois, Louisiana, New Jersey, New York, Colorado, Arkansas, Oregon, Kentucky, Michigan, New Mexico, Virginia, Washington, Tennessee, Massachusetts, North Carolina, West Virginia, South Carolina and Vermont. In 2003, the District of Columbia passed legislation to recognize Juneteenth as a district holiday observance. Many more states, including Utah, Alabama, South Dakota, Pennsylvania, Montana, Wisconsin and Maryland have recognized Juneteenth through state legislative resolutions, Gubernatorial Proclamations and current state holiday observance legislation. "Dr. Myers is also the leader of the National Juneteenth Holiday Campaign," states Wilma Newton. "We wlll have petitions available at the reception for everyone to send to President Barack Obama to make Juneteenth a National Holiday Observance in America. The public is invited to come out and be a part of history." entrepreneurial activities that provide exposure to the principles of a green economy.
The “Green Peace Project” promotes an environment that demonstrably shows the
correlation between; preservation and responsibility; and economic development and
community esteem. The program seeks as a mission to establish a multitude of
gardens throughout the city of Philadelphia, utilizing discarded or dysfunctional
space. The land is cultivated and developed to yield marketable provisions and
provide communities healthy options. The gardens include seating areas and
sculptured universal peace symbols to provide communities with peaceful
eco-friendly space. The program advances the proposition of using
community-connectivity to spur economic growth and progress. Goals: The three-month series teaches participants; the study of pedology; the tenets of
agriculture; entrepreneurial dexterity; and community prosperity. Participants will
gain knowledge in self-sufficiency, self-determination, ethics and business. Facts: Urban Agriculture 50% of the world’s population lives in cities. 800 million people are involved in urban agriculture world-wide and contribute to
feeding urban residents. Low income urban dwellers spend between 40% and 60% of their income on food
each year. By 2015 about 26 cities in the world are expected to have a population of 10 million or
more. To feed a city of this size – at least 6000 tons of food must be imported each
day. Contact House Of Umoja 215.473.5892 ----- Coalition members! Get ‘Your’web link on The Coalition, Inc. web site ----- -----------------

PHENND works to build the capacity of its member institutions to develop mutually beneficial, sustained, and democratic community-based service-learning partnerships. The consortium actively seeks to revitalize local communities and schools and foster civic responsibility among the region's colleges and universities. The theme of this year’s conference is financial asset development. The conference will cover topics such as Volunteer Income Tax Assistance, public benefits campaign, financial education and much more. All of these topics are things needed to help low-income communities become financially self-sufficient and the conference will focus on how colleges and universities can play a role in this process. The keynote speaker for the conference will be Karen Gross, President of Southern Vermont College. Gross has had a long and distinguished career as an academic and community development leader. For more than two decades, she was a Professor of Law at New York Law School where she specialized in consumer finance and over-indebtedness. In addition, she was, until recently, the President and CEO of an educational non-profit organization that designs, implements and studies programs to improve the financial literacy skills of consumers called The Coalition for Consumer Bankruptcy Debtor Education. Workshops to be held at the conference include Volunteer Income Tax Assistance in the Delaware Valley, Financial Education Opportunities at VITA Sites, Philadelphia Food Stamp Enrollment Campaign, Financial Education Clubs for College Campuses, Foreclosures in Philadelphia, The Benefit Bank & National Student Partnerships Model, and the Workforce Development Initiatives at the University of Pennsylvania.
