Greetings Coalition Family! Although our initial intent was to have fewer sites for this year’s Week of Peace observation, it seems we will have more sites than last year’s number ten. We applaud those of you who have stepped up to offer your sites and participation in this annual event, which seems to have impacted the community positively. According to the Philadelphia Police Department, crime has been down during our events. All the credit goes to those local groups who put this thing together every year. There is still time if your group or organization wishes to be represented at one or more of the sites (to be listed in a future edition). Another autobiographical piece for Black History Month on page 14, check it out. Due to the length of some of the announcements, some will be detailed in our group The Coalition, Inc. Group as will be noted. Thank you for your continued support. We want to hear from you! The Coalition, Inc. website is open! This is our website, let us build it together! Let us know
what you think. "A hundred times every day I remind myself that my inner and outer life depend on

To help, under the Resource tab, http://www.cap4kids.org/philadelphia/resources.html , we have added Cap4Kids Parent Questionnaires that you can post in your office, exam rooms, schools, and community centers to let families know what issues we can help them with in their community. There are two programs to choose from. A Saturday afternoon respite program is offered at Boys and Girls Clubs in four different areas of the city from noon-5pm. All participants receive a free membership to the Boys and Girls Club. The Family Care Respite Program matches children with an appropriate foster family who will provide weekend respite services. The respite families are trained, licensed and have all state required child serving clearances. Children can stay a full day, overnight or for the weekend. PHENND works to build the capacity of its member institutions to develop mutually beneficial, sustained, and democratic community-based service-learning partnerships. The consortium actively seeks to revitalize local communities and schools and foster civic responsibility among the region's colleges and universities. The theme of this year’s conference is financial asset development. The conference will cover topics such as Volunteer Income Tax Assistance, public benefits campaign, financial education and much more. All of these topics are things needed to help low-income communities become financially self-sufficient and the conference will focus on how colleges and universities can play a role in this process. The keynote speaker for the conference will be Karen Gross, President of Southern Vermont College. Gross has had a long and distinguished career as an academic and community development leader. For more than two decades, she was a Professor of Law at New York Law School where she specialized in consumer finance and over-indebtedness. In addition, she was, until recently, the President and CEO of an educational non-profit organization that designs, implements and studies programs to improve the financial literacy skills of consumers called The Coalition for Consumer Bankruptcy Debtor Education. corrupt systems they encountered. A brief biography of Butch Cottman
Soldier, Scholar, Organizer, Planner, Issue analyst, Policy analyst &
fair judge of hunting dogs.
I am 65 years old, a graduate of Edison High School in Philadelphia. Class of 1962, a Regular army veteran of the war in
Southeast Asia (Airborne, Recon, Calvary) and the father of three fine, strapping, rowdy black women. Until I was eleven years old I was raised by family members in rural North Carolina and fully expected to spend my life as
a field hand, before moving to Philadelphia in the mid-nineteen fifties. The civil rights movement and black liberation movement changed all that by giving me a glimpse of how the world could
be remade according to the will of formerly powerless communities to permanently overthrow their oppressors. My
military experience gave me a glimpse of my usefulness in our struggle and a desperate need to serve suffering people. I have worked many years as a radical political, community & trade union organizer. I am absolutely committed to encouraging
and preparing the poor wherever I find them to understand, advocate, organize and govern in the best interests of their own
communities. I was active in the UAW at Strick Trailer Corporation in the mid sixties where the constant speed-ups and union leaderships’
subservience to management made working conditions brutal. As a union laborer I was active in organizing for the elections that ended the Federal trusteeship of ‘Laborers Local 332’ in the
late sixties. I was a member of ‘the Black Political Forum’ from 1970 until 1975. The BPF lead the movement for Black independent electoral
organizing in the Delaware valley. I was an organizer of the Black Political Convention in 1970. I was an associate of the United Progressives, as well as member of the Northwest Political Caucus and the Philadelphia
delegation to the Pennsylvania Black Assembly’ from 1971 through 1975. During this period I helped organize the independent electoral campaigns of Hardy Williams for Mayor, George McGovern for
President, David P. Richardson & John White Jr. for the State house of Representatives, George French for City Council, Ben
Johnson for the State Senate and Dorothy Perrine for the State House. I was a founding member of ‘the Black Political Cadre for Social Change’ and ‘Black Political Study for Social Change’ in 1975. I was involved in organizing the Philadelphia Black Political Conventions in 1979 & 1980. I was an organizer and
treasurer of the founding convention of the National Black Political Party in 1981 and a member of its Central Committee
in 1982 & 83. Through 1982 I served on the advisory committee of NARMIC (National Action
Research on the Military Industrial Complex) a project of the American Friends
Service Committee Because of lessons learned during this period I have worked on a number of projects involving the development of
principled leadership for the Black Community. I was the Delaware Valley Coordinator in 1983 for the twentieth Anniversary March on Washington DC were we
mobilized a delegation of twenty thousand. I was the last Chairperson of the Delaware Valley Housing Coalition in 1993/94 the coalition organized the collective advocacy
campaigns of homeless advocates and tenant organizations that confronted government and real estate interests regarding housing
for the poor. I am past President of the Board of Directors of the ‘Southwest Germantown
Neighborhood Partnership’ a community organization that represented the interests
of low & moderate income residents in community development planning &
development activity. I am a board member of The ‘Central Germantown Council’ which aspires to lead the revitalization of the central Germantown
business district, and a member of ‘Reconstruction’ CDC an ex-offender advocacy and membership support organization that
organizes and serves ex-offenders, their families and communities. I am a Co-founder Since 2006 of the Philadelphia Community Institute for Africana
Studies an archival, educational and research foundation created to retrieve,
preserve, analyze and share the history of progressive activism in the Delaware Valley
over the past fifty years in order to facilitate the development of principled leadership
for the Black Community. We aspire to consolidate the ‘Institute for African American
Development’ as a permanent source of leadership development and policy analysis
in the Philadelphia area. The focus of my work in every environment I have found myself has been the development of principled, independent leadership. I am an unrepentant Marxist-Leninist whose practice is primarily in the service of the Black poor. I hope this gives a useful picture of my political history and development. This was the last major vestige of slavery in the United States following the end of the Civil War. This occurred more than two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued by President Abraham Lincoln. Upon the reading of General Order #3 by General Granger, the former slaves celebrated jubilantly, establishing America's second Independence Day Celebration and the oldest African-American holiday observance. Juneteenth is now recognized as a state holiday or state holiday observance in Texas, Oklahoma, Florida, Delaware, Idaho, Alaska, Iowa, California, Wyoming, Missouri, Connecticut, Illinois, Louisiana, New Jersey, New York, Colorado, Arkansas, Oregon, Kentucky, Michigan, New Mexico, Virginia, Washington, Tennessee, Massachusetts, North Carolina, West Virginia, South Carolina and Vermont. In 2003, the District of Columbia passed legislation to recognize Juneteenth as a district holiday observance. entrepreneurial activities that provide exposure to the principles of a green economy.
The “Green Peace Project” promotes an environment that demonstrably shows the
correlation between; preservation and responsibility; and economic development and
community esteem. The program seeks as a mission to establish a multitude of
gardens throughout the city of Philadelphia, utilizing discarded or dysfunctional
space. The land is cultivated and developed to yield marketable provisions and
provide communities healthy options. The gardens include seating areas and
sculptured universal peace symbols to provide communities with peaceful
eco-friendly space. The program advances the proposition of using
community-connectivity to spur economic growth and progress. Goals: The three-month series teaches participants; the study of pedology; the tenets of
agriculture; entrepreneurial dexterity; and community prosperity. Participants will
gain knowledge in self-sufficiency, self-determination, ethics and business. Facts: Urban Agriculture 50% of the world’s population lives in cities. 800 million people are involved in urban agriculture worldwide and contribute to
feeding urban residents. Low-income urban dwellers spend between 40% and 60% of their income on food
each year. By 2015 about 26 cities in the world are expected to have a population of 10 million or
more. To feed a city of this size – at least 6000 tons of food must be imported each

The largest team will receive the Team Trish Award in her honor. Registration for the event starts at 7am at La Salle University.
