Greetings Coalition Family!

Although our initial intent was to have fewer sites for  this year’s Week of Peace observation, it seems we will have more sites than  last year’s number ten. We applaud those of you who have stepped up to offer  your sites and participation in this annual event, which seems to have  impacted the community positively. According to the Philadelphia Police  Department, crime has been down during our events. All the credit goes to  those local groups who put this thing together every year.

There is still time if your group or organization wishes  to be represented at one or more of the sites (to be listed in a future  edition).

Another autobiographical piece for Black History Month on  page 14, check it out.

Due to the length of some of the announcements, some will  be detailed in our group The Coalition, Inc. Group  as will be noted. Thank you for your continued support.

We want to hear  from you! The Coalition, Inc. website is open! This is our website,  let us build it together! Let us know what you think.

In Philadelphia, and listed on the www.cap4kids.org/philadelphia  website,

there are so many  resources for families in need that it is sometimes overwhelming to cover  many of the issues that our families face as we try to link families in need  with the social service agencies that serve them.

To help, under the  Resource tab, http://www.cap4kids.org/philadelphia/resources.html  , we have added Cap4Kids Parent Questionnaires that you can post in your  office, exam rooms, schools, and community centers to let families know what  issues we can help them with in their community.

City offers respite to parents of  children with MH issues

The Philadelphia  Department of Behavioral Health is offering a children’s respite program for  parents who have a child or children ages 6-16 receiving mental health  services and who need a Saturday afternoon, a full day or an overnight off.

There are two  programs to choose from.  A Saturday  afternoon respite program is offered at Boys and Girls Clubs in four  different areas of the city from noon-5pm.   All participants receive a free membership to the Boys and Girls Club.

The Family Care  Respite Program matches children with an appropriate foster family who will  provide weekend respite services. The respite families are trained, licensed  and have all state required child serving clearances.  Children can stay a full day, overnight or  for the weekend.

Pre-registration is  required for both programs.

To request  additional information and a registration form call 215-685-4734 or  215-685-4746 or 215-685-5502.

AFTER  SCHOOL PROGRAM

In Philadelphia there are many latchkey children,  children without role models, sedentary children, and Generation I (internet)  children spending hours in front of a screen (TV and/or computer). ALL of  these children have hidden or untapped talents and potential.

The After School Program handout www.cap4kids.org/philadelphia  on Cap4Kids http://www.cap4kids.org/philadelphia/parent_handouts/after_school_programs_camps.html  lists hundreds of activities to help children and teens realize their  potentials and at the same time decrease their risk taking behaviors. From  Squash to Tennis, Horse Back Riding to Training for Marathons, Mural Art  making to Music recording.

The programs are many and the need is many.  PLEASE help families in need find specific activities that interest our  children and use the Cap4Kids After School handout to help bridge the gap  between families in need and the social service agencies that serve them.

Thanks.

Colleges  Set Asset Development Conference

The Philadelphia  Higher Education Network for Neighborhood Development, a consortium of 36  colleges and universities in the greater Philadelphia area, will hold its  2009 annual conference on

Friday, February  27th at

Chestnut Hill  College in Philadelphia.

PHENND works to  build the capacity of its member institutions to develop mutually beneficial,  sustained, and democratic community-based service-learning partnerships. The  consortium actively seeks to revitalize local communities and schools and  foster civic responsibility among the region's colleges and universities.

The theme of this  year’s conference is financial asset development.  The conference will cover topics such as Volunteer Income Tax  Assistance, public benefits campaign, financial education and much more. All  of these topics are things needed to help low-income communities become  financially self-sufficient and the conference will focus on how colleges and  universities can play a role in this process.

The keynote speaker  for the conference will be Karen Gross, President of Southern Vermont  College.  Gross has had a long and  distinguished career as an academic and community development leader. For  more than two decades, she was a Professor of Law at New York Law School  where she specialized in consumer finance and over-indebtedness.

In addition, she  was, until recently, the President and CEO of an educational non-profit  organization that designs, implements and studies programs to improve the  financial literacy skills of consumers called The Coalition for Consumer  Bankruptcy Debtor Education.

Workshops to be  held at the conference include Volunteer Income Tax Assistance in the  Delaware Valley, Financial Education Opportunities at VITA Sites,  Philadelphia Food Stamp Enrollment Campaign, Financial Education Clubs for  College Campuses, Foreclosures in Philadelphia, The Benefit Bank &  National Student Partnerships Model, and the Workforce Development  Initiatives at the University of Pennsylvania.

BLACK  HISTORY MONTH

As promised, we are featuring bio’s and auto bio’s of local folk who  made many sacrifices to challenge the corrupt systems they encountered.

A brief biography of Butch Cottman

Soldier, Scholar, Organizer, Planner,  Issue analyst, Policy analyst & fair judge of hunting dogs.

I am 65 years old, a graduate of Edison High School in  Philadelphia. Class of 1962, a Regular army veteran of the war in Southeast  Asia (Airborne, Recon, Calvary) and the father of three fine, strapping,  rowdy black women.

Until I was eleven years old I  was raised by family members in rural North Carolina and fully expected to  spend my life as a field hand, before moving to Philadelphia in the  mid-nineteen fifties.

The civil rights movement and  black liberation movement changed all that by giving me a glimpse of how the  world could be remade according to the will of formerly powerless communities  to permanently overthrow their oppressors. My military experience gave me a  glimpse of my usefulness in our struggle and a desperate need to serve  suffering people.

I have worked many years as a radical political, community  & trade union organizer. I am absolutely committed to encouraging and  preparing the poor wherever I find them to understand, advocate, organize and  govern in the best interests of their own communities.

I was active in the UAW at Strick Trailer Corporation in  the mid sixties where the constant speed-ups and union leaderships’  subservience to management made working conditions brutal.

As a union laborer I was active in organizing for the  elections that ended the Federal trusteeship of ‘Laborers Local 332’ in the  late sixties.

I was a member of ‘the Black Political Forum’ from 1970  until 1975. The BPF lead the movement for Black independent electoral  organizing in the Delaware valley.

I was an organizer of the Black Political Convention in  1970.

I was an associate of the United Progressives, as well as  member of the Northwest Political Caucus and the Philadelphia delegation to  the Pennsylvania Black Assembly’ from 1971 through 1975.

During this period I helped organize the independent  electoral campaigns of Hardy Williams for Mayor, George McGovern for  President, David P. Richardson & John White Jr. for the State house of Representatives,  George French for City Council, Ben Johnson for the State Senate and Dorothy  Perrine for the State House.

I was a founding member of ‘the Black Political Cadre for  Social Change’ and ‘Black Political Study for Social Change’ in 1975.

I  was involved in organizing the Philadelphia Black Political Conventions in  1979 & 1980. I was an organizer and treasurer of the founding convention  of the National Black Political Party in 1981 and a member of its Central  Committee in 1982 & 83.

Through 1982 I served on the advisory committee of NARMIC (National  Action Research on the Military Industrial Complex) a project of the American  Friends Service Committee

Because  of lessons learned during this period I have worked on a number of projects  involving the development of principled leadership for the Black Community.

I  was the Delaware Valley Coordinator in 1983 for the twentieth Anniversary  March on Washington DC were we mobilized a delegation of twenty thousand.

I was the last Chairperson of the Delaware Valley Housing  Coalition in 1993/94 the coalition organized the collective advocacy  campaigns of homeless advocates and tenant organizations that confronted  government and real estate interests regarding housing for the poor.

I am past President of the Board of Directors of the ‘Southwest  Germantown Neighborhood Partnership’ a community organization that  represented the interests of low & moderate income residents in community  development planning & development activity.

I am a board member of The ‘Central Germantown Council’  which aspires to lead the revitalization of the central Germantown business  district, and a member of ‘Reconstruction’ CDC an ex-offender advocacy and  membership support organization that organizes and serves ex-offenders, their  families and communities.

I am a Co-founder Since 2006 of the Philadelphia  Community Institute for Africana Studies an archival, educational and  research foundation created to retrieve, preserve, analyze and share the  history of progressive activism in the Delaware Valley over the past fifty  years in order to facilitate the development of principled leadership for the  Black Community. We aspire to consolidate the ‘Institute for African American  Development’ as a permanent source of leadership development and policy  analysis in the Philadelphia area.

The focus of my work in every environment I have found  myself has been the development of principled, independent leadership.

I am an unrepentant Marxist-Leninist whose practice is  primarily in the service of the Black poor.

I hope this gives a useful picture of my political history  and development.

UNITE THE MANY TO DEFEAT THE FEW.

Juneteenth, or the  "19th of June", recognizes June 19, 1865, in Galveston, TX, when  Union General Gordon Granger announced freedom for all slaves in the  Southwest. This was the last major vestige of slavery in the United States  following the end of the Civil War. This occurred more than two and a half  years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued by President Abraham  Lincoln. Upon the reading of General Order #3 by General Granger, the former  slaves celebrated jubilantly, establishing America's second Independence Day  Celebration and the oldest African-American holiday observance.

Juneteenth is now  recognized as a state holiday or state holiday observance in Texas, Oklahoma,  Florida, Delaware, Idaho, Alaska, Iowa, California, Wyoming, Missouri,  Connecticut, Illinois, Louisiana, New Jersey, New York, Colorado, Arkansas,  Oregon, Kentucky, Michigan, New Mexico, Virginia, Washington, Tennessee,  Massachusetts, North Carolina, West Virginia, South Carolina and Vermont. In  2003, the District of Columbia passed legislation to recognize Juneteenth as  a district holiday observance. Many more states, including Utah, Alabama,  South Dakota, Pennsylvania, Montana, Wisconsin and Maryland have recognized  Juneteenth through state legislative resolutions, Gubernatorial Proclamations  and current state holiday observance legislation.

"Dr. Myers is  also the leader of the National Juneteenth Holiday Campaign," states  Wilma Newton. "We wlll have petitions available at the reception for  everyone to send to President Barack Obama to make Juneteenth a National  Holiday Observance in America. The public is invited to come out and be a  part of history."

Green  Economy

House of Umoja Green Peace Project

Program Overview:

The HOU program is designed to encourage  at-risk youths to engage in civic and entrepreneurial activities that provide  exposure to the principles of a green economy. The “Green  Peace Project” promotes an  environment that demonstrably shows the correlation between; preservation and  responsibility; and economic development and community esteem. The program  seeks as a mission to establish a multitude of gardens throughout the city of  Philadelphia, utilizing discarded or dysfunctional space. The land is  cultivated and developed to yield marketable provisions and provide  communities healthy options. The gardens include seating areas and sculptured  universal peace symbols to provide communities with peaceful eco-friendly  space. The program advances the proposition of using community-connectivity  to spur economic growth and progress.

Goals:

The three-month series teaches  participants; the study of pedology; the tenets of agriculture;  entrepreneurial dexterity; and community prosperity. Participants will gain  knowledge in self-sufficiency, self-determination, ethics and business.

Facts:

Urban Agriculture

50% of the world’s population lives in  cities.

800 million people are involved in urban  agriculture worldwide and contribute to feeding urban residents.

Low-income urban dwellers spend between 40%  and 60% of their income on food each year.

By 2015 about 26 cities in the world are  expected to have a population of 10 million or more. To feed a city of this  size – at least 6000 tons of food must be imported each day.

GRANTS,  SCHOLARSHIPS & INSTRUCTION

AFRICAN AMERICAN STUDENTS ARE NOT APPLYING FOR SCHOLARSHIPS

Even if you do not  have a college-aged child at home, please share this with someone who does,  pass this scholarship information on to anyone and everyone that comes to  mind. Though there are a number of companies and organizations that have  donated moneys for scholarship use to African Americans, a great deal of the  money is being returned because of a lack of interest.

No one is going to  knock on our doors and ask if we can use a scholarship.

Take the initiative  to get your children involved. There is no need for money to be returned to  donating companies because we fail to apply for it.

Please pass this  information on to family members, nieces, nephews, and friends with children  etc. We must get the word out that money is available. If you are a college  student or getting ready to become one, you probably already know how useful  additional money can be.

Our youth really could use these scholarships. Thanks!!

Local  Church Seeks Proposals to Fund Community Projects

Do you or your  organization have an idea how to help your neighbors in these difficult  economic times but need a small grant to get your idea moving? First United Methodist Church of  Germantown (FUMCOG) is looking to support projects that promote social  justice and peace in the local community. By setting aside our Easter  offering, we hope to award several small grants of a few hundred to a few thousand  dollars to help facilitate worthy community endeavors.

All proposals are  welcome and are reviewed by a committee of church members. Selection criteria  in awarding grants include the size of the population to be served, the  nature of the services provided, and expected benefits to the community.

Grants from  previous Easter and Christmas collections have been awarded on a  nondenominational basis to a diverse group of applicants for a wide variety  of causes. Monies from the recent Christmas Collection were used to: assist  home repairs for senior citizens, support breast health in underserved  neighborhoods, help address the racial achievement gap in the city, and to  help promote healthier eating in some of the Philadelphia schools.

Application forms  can be obtained by calling the office of First United Methodist Church of  Germantown at (215) 438-3677, or request a form online at WWW.FUMCOG.org

For consideration,  completed proposals must be returned to the church office at 6001 Germantown  Ave., no later than Friday, March 13, 2009. Organizations with non-profit  tax-exempt status should include a copy of their 501-3c certification.

Recipients will be  notified of their selection by April 3rd. Funds should be awarded by early  May.

2009 NIH Regional Seminars on Program Funding and Grants  Administration

The National Institutes of  Health (NIH) would like to inform you of an exciting opportunity to  participate in the 2009 NIH Regional Seminars on Program Funding and Grants  Administration.  These seminars are  held only twice a year and are intended to help demystify the application and  review process, clarify federal regulations and policies, and highlight  current areas of special interest or concern.  Approximately 25 leading policy, program, and grants management  officials from NIH and HHS will share their expertise and guidance.

In conjunction with the 2-day seminar, the NIH is  offering attendees the option of participating in eRA Computer Workshops  designed to provide hands-on experience in utilizing the eRA Commons for  administrators and investigators.  The  workshops are geared towards administrators, principal investigators and  assistants with little or no eSubmission or eRA Commons experience and focus  on how to use the electronic systems to facilitate application/grant  administration.  However, space is  limited.

If you miss out on  the opportunity to attend the workshops, don't fret...eRA staff will be on  hand throughout the 2-day seminar at the eRA booth, during breaks &  meals, and much of the material will be presented as part of the seminar  itself.  Early registration is highly  recommended.

Except for a visit  to NIH, there is not another opportunity like the NIH Regional Seminars to  interact with this many experts, ready to provide you with the latest policy  and process news first-hand.

The foundation is  accepting applications for the following grant programs:

The Learning &  Leadership Grants program provides opportunities for teachers, education  support professionals, and higher education faculty and staff to engage in  high-quality professional development and lead their colleagues in  professional growth.  Grants to  individuals fund participation in professional development experiences such  as summer institutes and action research. Grants to groups fund collegial  study, including study groups, action research, lesson study, and mentoring  experiences for faculty or staff new to an assignment. The grant amount is  $2,000 for individuals and $5,000 for groups.

The Student Achievement Grants program  provides grants of $5,000 each to improve the academic achievement of  students by engaging in critical thinking and problem solving that deepen  knowledge of standards-based subject matter. The work should also improve  students’ habits of inquiry, self-directed learning, and critical reflection.  Proposals for work resulting in low-income and minority student success with  honors, advanced placement, and other challenging curricula are particularly  encouraged. Grant funds may be used for resource materials, supplies,  equipment, transportation, software, and scholars-in-residence.

Applicants must be  practicing U.S. public school teachers in grades K-12, public school  education support professionals, or faculty and staff at public higher  education institutions.

SpotLight  ON OUR EFFORTS

When Activist, attorney, NAACP president Cecil B. Moore  elected to launch an assault on the segregated institution of Girard College  in
North Philadelphia, he recruited a bunch of neighborhood young people to be  his foot soldiers. What he didn’t know at the time was the seeds he planted  would grow into mighty trees that would carry his message of no compromise  attack on racism all over the country. Several of these activists, led by the  late ‘Freedom’ George Brower, eventually known as the Young Militants, are  now veterans of the movement and featured in the award-winning documentary  ‘At The Wall’ by Warren and Zilan Munas aired many times on Philly channel 35  WYBE.
