problems remembering things, so
they decided to go to their doctor
to get checked out to make sure
nothing was wrong with them. When they arrived at the doctors,
they explained to the doctor about
the problems they were having with
their memory. After checking the
couple out, the doctor told them
that they were physically okay but
might want to start writing things
down and make notes to help them
remember things. The couple
thanked the doctor and left. Later that night while watching TV,
the man got up from his chair and
his wife asked, "Where are you
going?" She replied, "Well I also would like
whipped cream on top. I know you
will forget that so you better write
it down." After about 20 minutes he returned
from the kitchen and handed her a
plate of bacon and eggs. She stared
at the plate for a moment and said

Greetings Coalition Family! Although our initial intent was to have fewer sites for this year’s Week of Peace observation, it seems we will have more sites than last year’s number ten. We applaud those of you who have stepped up to offer your sites and participation in this annual event, which seems to have impacted the community positively. According to the Philadelphia Police Department, crime has been down during our events. All the credit goes to those local groups who put this thing together every year. There is still time if your group or organization wishes to be represented at one or more of the sites (to be listed in a future edition). Join us at our next meeting: Tuesday, March 10, 7pm Kingsessing Recreation Center 50th Street and Kingsessing Avenue. Due to the length of some of the announcements, some will be detailed in our group The Coalition, Inc. Group as will be noted. Thank you for your continued support. We want to hear from you! The Coalition, Inc. website is open! This is our website, let us build it together! Let us know
what you think. "Let's face it. In most of life we really are interdependent. We need each other.
Staunch independence is an illusion, but heavy dependence isn't healthy, either. The
only position of long-term strength is interdependence: win/win." Greg Anderson FOR OUR CHILDREN

There are two programs to choose from. A Saturday afternoon respite program is offered at Boys and Girls Clubs in four different areas of the city from noon-5pm. All participants receive a free membership to the Boys and Girls Club. The Family Care Respite Program matches children with an appropriate foster family who will provide weekend respite services. The respite families are trained, licensed and have all state required child serving clearances. Children can stay a full day, overnight or for the weekend. Get ‘Your’web link on The Coalition, Inc. web site ----- AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM In Philadelphia there are many latchkey children, children without role models, sedentary children, and Generation I (internet) children spending hours in front of a screen (TV and/or computer). ALL of these children have hidden or untapped talents and potential. The After School Program handout www.cap4kids.org/philadelphia on Cap4Kids
http://www.cap4kids.org/philadelphia/parent_handouts/after_school_programs_camps.html lists hundreds of activities to help children and teens realize their potentials
and at the same time decrease their risk taking behaviors. From Squash to Tennis,
Horse Back Riding to Training for Marathons, Mural Art making to Music recording. The programs are many and the need is many. PLEASE help families in need find
specific activities that interest our children and use the Cap4Kids After School
handout to help bridge the gap between families in need and the social service
agencies that serve them. In Philadelphia, and listed on the www.cap4kids.org/philadelphia website, there are so many resources for families in need that it is sometimes overwhelming to cover many of the issues that our families face as we try to link families in need with the social service agencies that serve them. To help, under the Resource tab, http://www.cap4kids.org/philadelphia/resources.html , we have added Cap4Kids Parent Questionnaires that you can post in your office, exam rooms, schools, and community centers to let families know what issues we can help them with in their community. entrepreneurial activities that provide exposure to the principles of a green economy.
The “Green Peace Project” promotes an environment that demonstrably shows the
correlation between; preservation and responsibility; and economic development and
community esteem. The program seeks as a mission to establish a multitude of
gardens throughout the city of Philadelphia, utilizing discarded or dysfunctional
space. The land is cultivated and developed to yield marketable provisions and
provide communities healthy options. The gardens include seating areas and
sculptured universal peace symbols to provide communities with peaceful
eco-friendly space. The program advances the proposition of using
community-connectivity to spur economic growth and progress. Goals: The three-month series teaches participants; the study of pedology; the tenets of
agriculture; entrepreneurial dexterity; and community prosperity. Participants will
gain knowledge in self-sufficiency, self-determination, ethics and business. Facts: Urban Agriculture 50% of the world’s population lives in cities. 800 million people are involved in urban agriculture worldwide and contribute to
feeding urban residents. Low-income urban dwellers spend between 40% and 60% of their income on food
each year. By 2015 about 26 cities in the world are expected to have a population of 10 million or
more. To feed a city of this size – at least 6000 tons of food must be imported each
day. Contact House Of Umoja 215-473-5893 ----- Coalition members! Though there are a number of companies and organizations that have donated moneys for scholarship use to African Americans, a great deal of the money is being returned because of a lack of interest. No one is going to knock on our doors and ask if we can use a scholarship. Take the initiative to get your children involved. There is no need for money to be returned to donating companies because we fail to apply for it. Please pass this information on to family members, nieces, nephews, and friends with children etc. We must get the word out that money is available. First United Methodist Church of Germantown (FUMCOG) is looking to support projects that promote social justice and peace in the local community. By setting aside our Easter offering, we hope to award several small grants of a few hundred to a few thousand dollars to help facilitate worthy community endeavors. All proposals are welcome and are reviewed by a committee of church members. Selection criteria in awarding grants include the size of the population to be served, the nature of the services provided, and expected benefits to the community. Grants from previous Easter and Christmas collections have been awarded on a nondenominational basis to a diverse group of applicants for a wide variety of causes. Monies from the recent Christmas Collection were used to: assist home repairs for senior citizens, support breast health in underserved neighborhoods, help address the racial achievement gap in the city, and to help promote healthier eating in some of the Philadelphia schools. Application forms can be obtained by calling the office of First United Methodist Church of Germantown at (215) 438-3677, or request a form online at WWW.FUMCOG.org For consideration, completed proposals must be returned to the church office at 6001 Germantown Ave., no later than Friday, March 13, 2009. Organizations with non-profit tax-exempt status should include a copy of their 501-3c certification. Recipients will be notified of their selection by April 3rd. Funds should be awarded by early May. ----- Coalition members! These seminars are held only twice a year and are intended to help demystify the application and review process, clarify federal regulations and policies, and highlight current areas of special interest or concern. Approximately 25 leading policy, program, and grants management officials from NIH and HHS will share their expertise and guidance. In conjunction with the 2-day seminar, the NIH is offering attendees the option of participating in eRA Computer Workshops designed to provide hands-on experience in utilizing the eRA Commons for administrators and investigators. The workshops are geared towards administrators, principal investigators and assistants with little or no eSubmission or eRA Commons experience and focus on how to use the electronic systems to facilitate application/grant administration. However, space is limited. If you miss out on the opportunity to attend the workshops, don't fret...eRA staff will be on hand throughout the 2-day seminar at the eRA booth, during breaks & meals, and much of the material will be presented as part of the seminar itself. Early registration is highly recommended. Except for a visit to NIH, there is not another opportunity like the NIH Regional Seminars to interact with this many experts, ready to provide you with the latest policy and process news first-hand. Something only God can provide. In 1958, David Wilkerson was pasturing a small country church in Pennsylvania, when
he dared to see what God would do through him if he spent at least 2 hours a day in
prayer and meditation. It was not long before the Lord spoke to his spirit and
compelled him to go to New York City and minister to the "street kids" (those young
people around teenage years) who were involved in fighting in the streets and in
crime of every sort. At that time Reverend Wilkerson was not aware of the fact that
along with the incredible rate of crime, there existed an even more menacing
problem... DRUG ABUSE! From there Teen Challenge has grown to be the largest non-profit, private endeavor
of it's kind in the world. Geared toward people with life-controlling problems, a
person's need is seen in the light of the Christian message, which declares that the
power of God is really the answer for them. Only He has the power to change a life
and make it brand new. Presently Teen Challenge has 202 centers in the United
States and Puerto Rico, and almost 800 worldwide. WHAT WE DO... Teen Challenge provides the help needed by both men and women to be
reestablished in society after they have addressed, through counseling and biblical
teachings, their life-controlling problems. After completion of the program, 72 percent of Teen Challenge graduates continue
their education, 75 percent are employed, 87.5 percent do not require additional
treatment for substance abuse, and 92 percent report good-to-excellent health. In
short, Teen Challenge transforms drug addicts who are blights to their communities
into valuable citizens who are benefits to their communities. HOW? Students are involved in a loving and well-disciplined environment. This includes counseling, group interaction, religious activities, academic instruction,
recreation and vocational training. Community outreach programs and church
attendance are required. PROOF OF SUCCESS... Based on an independent survey in 1975, conducted by the National Opinion
Research Organization and funded by the Department of Health, Education and
Welfare, Teen Challenge has a documented 86% cure rate for drug addiction. This
percentage is based on a chemical test given to those interviewed five years after
completing the program. The Federal Government recognizes anyone who has been
drug free for a period of five years to be completely recovered. Teen Challenge is funded by contributions. Those who need our help the most can
least afford help. Please consider a donation to Teen Challenge. One of the ways Philadelphia Teen Challenge reaches out to area churches and the community is through our resident choir. Each weekend the choir visits churches sharing music and testimonies. The Philadelphia Mass Choir has had the pleasure of ministering to a wide variety of churches in and out of the tri-state area. Our goal is to be a blessing to congregations by testifying about God's healing power in our lives and helping others see that with Him, they too, can overcome their struggles. tomika.vines@teenchallengetc.com ARTS FOR AWARENESS Calling All Girls of African Descent Ages 7-18 MWM Lil' Sistahs “Talent Search & Creative Arts” Showcase Final Winter AUDITIONS Call If you think you’ve got talent, creativity, skills, something positive to say, and/or are interested in learning,/training then “We’ve got just the thing for YOU!” The MWM 'Lil’ Sistahs: Program is teaming up with other conscious and committed Black communications and media groups/organizations, institutions, business persons and individuals who are serious about “Saving Our Daughters” and helping to assure that the true legacy and greatness of Black Artistry and integrity is upheld and continued.
