AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM
In Philadelphia there are many latchkey children, children without role
models, sedentary children, and Generation I (internet) children
spending hours in front of a screen (TV and/or computer). ALL of
these children have hidden or untapped talents and potential.
The After School Program handout www.cap4kids.org/philadelphia on
Cap4Kids
http://www.cap4kids.org/philadelphia/parent_handouts/after_school_programs_camps.html lists hundreds of activities to help children and
teens realize their potentials and at the same time decrease their risk
taking behaviors. From Squash to Tennis, Horse Back Riding to
Training for Marathons, Mural Art making to Music recording.
The programs are many and the need is many. PLEASE help families
in need find specific activities that interest our children and use the
Cap4Kids After School handout to help bridge the gap between
families in need and the social service agencies that serve them.
In Philadelphia, and listed on the www.cap4kids.org/philadelphia
website,
there are so many resources for families in need that it is sometimes
overwhelming to cover many of the issues that our families face as we
try to link families in need with the social service agencies that serve
them.
To help, under the Resource tab,
http://www.cap4kids.org/philadelphia/resources.html ,
we have added Cap4Kids Parent Questionnaires that you can post in
your office, exam rooms, schools, and community centers to let
families know what issues we can help them with in their community.

Green Economy
House of Umoja Green Peace Project
Program Overview:
The HOU program is designed to encourage at-risk youths to engage in
civic and entrepreneurial activities that provide exposure to the
principles of a green economy. The ?Green Peace Project? promotes
an environment that demonstrably shows the correlation between;
preservation and responsibility; and economic development and
community esteem. The program seeks as a mission to establish a
multitude of gardens throughout the city of Philadelphia, utilizing
discarded or dysfunctional space. The land is cultivated and developed
to yield marketable provisions and provide communities healthy
options. The gardens include seating areas and sculptured universal
peace symbols to provide communities with peaceful eco-friendly
space. The program advances the proposition of using
community-connectivity to spur economic growth and progress.
Goals:
The three-month series teaches participants; the study of pedology; the
tenets of agriculture; entrepreneurial dexterity; and community
prosperity. Participants will gain knowledge in self-sufficiency,
self-determination, ethics and business.
Facts:
Urban Agriculture
50% of the world?s population lives in cities.
800 million people are involved in urban agriculture worldwide and
contribute to feeding urban residents.
Low-income urban dwellers spend between 40% and 60% of their
income on food each year.
By 2015 about 26 cities in the world are expected to have a population
of 10 million or more. To feed a city of this size ? at least 6000 tons of
food must be imported each day.

GRANTS, SCHOLARSHIPS & INSTRUCTION
The Philadelphia Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity
is once again seeking applicants for its annual
Hiliary H. Holloway, Esquire Scholarship Award program.
The chapter's scholarship program, named after the late Hiliary H.
Holloway, Esquire, a past Grand Polemarch and
Laurel Wreath recipient of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity,
as well as a longtime member of the Philadelphia Alumni Chapter,
is designed to aid promising minority male students in the public high
schools of Philadelphia who are planning to matriculate in college
following their graduation from high school.
Applications and further info can be obtained from the student's
Principal or guidance counselor.
All applications must be postmarked by April 4, 2009 to be considered.
The amount of the scholarship award is $2,000. A total of
four $2,000 scholarships will be awarded in 2009.
The fraternity uses the scholarship grants to enhance the opportunities
for minority males to acquire a college education. The organization
seeks to reach and assist those young men who have demonstrated
academic promise, but have not necessarily accumulated the highest
averages.
Additionally, the need for financial assistance is fundamental. Students
who meet these criteria should contact their Principal or guidance
counselor about this scholarship opportunity immediately.

Local Church Seeks Proposals to Fund Community Projects
Do you or your organization have an idea how to help your neighbors
in these difficult economic times but need a small grant to get your idea
moving? First United Methodist Church of Germantown
(FUMCOG) is looking to support projects that promote social justice
and peace in the local community. By setting aside our Easter offering,
we hope to award several small grants of a few hundred to a few
thousand dollars to help facilitate worthy community endeavors.
All proposals are welcome and are reviewed by a committee of church
members. Selection criteria in awarding grants include the size of the
population to be served, the nature of the services provided, and
expected benefits to the community.
Grants from previous Easter and Christmas collections have been
awarded on a nondenominational basis to a diverse group of applicants
for a wide variety of causes. Monies from the recent Christmas
Collection were used to: assist home repairs for senior citizens, support
breast health in underserved neighborhoods, help address the racial
achievement gap in the city, and to help promote healthier eating in
some of the Philadelphia schools.
Application forms can be obtained by calling the office of First United
Methodist Church of Germantown at (215) 438-3677, or request a
form online at WWW.FUMCOG.org
For consideration, completed proposals must be returned to the church
office at 6001 Germantown Ave., no later than Friday, March 13,
2009. Organizations with non-profit tax-exempt status should include a
copy of their 501-3c certification.
Recipients will be notified of their selection by April 3rd. Funds should
be awarded by early May.

Helping Local Businesses Survive a Bad Economy
Should local businesses use the Internet to become more profitable?
Hosted by the Greater Germantown Business Association
Philadelphia, PA, --- 7 million Americans are ?heavy? social media
contributors (6+ activities) who connect with 248 people on a ?one to
many? basis in a typical week. The percent of time people spend
communicating online has increased 18% since 2006, while time spent
on entertainment had declined 29 percent 1
?The problem is most small business owners do not realize that their
customer pool is online looking for them,? says business owner, JC
Lamkin, President, Gypsy Lane Technologies (GLT) and member of
the Greater Germantown Business Association (GGBA)."A quick drive
down the 8200 to 5100 blocks of Germantown Avenue in Philadelphia
will result in the realization that our area businesses are quickly
folding. But, if you take a cruise on social media websites, you will
begin to understand why ... prospective customers are online. These
days, it's not just about having a website or the plummeting DJIA (Dow
Jones Industrial Average). It is about connecting with customers,
establishing your brand as a leader in your industry and building
relationships online.Additionally, many business owners don't realize
that their customers are online discussing their product and service
needs. Social media sites are now allowing businesses to develop
relationships with customers.Business owners just need to learn how to
properly build a strategy and tap into that customer pool."
To address the concerns around closing Philadelphia area businesses,
the Greater Germantown Business Association welcomes all to attend
the
Free Greater Germantown Business Association?s regular monthly
meetings held on the
second Tuesday of every month; and, begins at
7:00 p.m. sharp with updates, the workshop immediately follows.
Meeting adjourns at 8:00 p.m.
This interactive workshop will be facilitated by tech expert, JC
Lamkin, PMP, president of Gypsy Lane Technologies (GLT), a
professional Internet solutions company headquartered in the
Germantown section of Philadelphia with training offices in
Philadelphia and King of Prussia, PA. GLT specializes in best-in-class
database development, website development, social media strategies,
webcasting, online marketing, Flash multimedia and content
management solutions. GLT features an integrated team of web
consultants, creative designers, writers, coders and marketing
professionals who know how to get online results.

2009 NIH Regional Seminars on Program Funding and Grants Administration
The National Institutes of Health (NIH) would like to inform you of an
exciting opportunity to participate in the 2009 NIH Regional Seminars
on Program Funding and Grants Administration. These seminars are
held only twice a year and are intended to help demystify the
application and review process, clarify federal regulations and policies,
and highlight current areas of special interest or
concern.Approximately 25 leading policy, program, and grants
management officials from NIH and HHS will share their expertise and
guidance.
In conjunction with the 2-day seminar, the NIH is offering attendees
the option of participating in eRA Computer Workshops designed to
provide hands-on experience in utilizing the eRA Commons for
administrators and investigators. The workshops are geared towards
administrators, principal investigators and assistants with little or no
eSubmission or eRA Commons experience and focus on how to use the
electronic systems to facilitate application/grant
administration.However, space is limited.
If you miss out on the opportunity to attend the workshops, don't
fret...eRA staff will be on hand throughout the 2-day seminar at the
eRA booth, during breaks & meals, and much of the material will be
presented as part of the seminar itself.Early registration is highly
recommended.
Except for a visit to NIH, there is not another opportunity like the NIH
Regional Seminars to interact with this many experts, ready to provide
you with the latest policy and process news first-hand.

AFRICAN AMERICAN STUDENTS ARE NOT APPLYING FOR SCHOLARSHIPS
Even if you do not have a college-aged child at home, please share this
with someone who does, pass this scholarship information on to anyone
and everyone that comes to mind. Though there are a number of
companies and organizations that have donated moneys for scholarship
use to African Americans, a great deal of the money is being returned
because of a lack of interest.
No one is going to knock on our doors and ask if we can use a
scholarship.
Take the initiative to get your children involved. There is no need for
money to be returned to donating companies because we fail to apply
for it.
Please pass this information on to family members, nieces, nephews,
and friends with children etc. We must get the word out that money is
available. If you are a college student or getting ready to become one,
you probably already know how useful additional money can be.
Our youth really could use these scholarships. Thanks!!

Gathering of Leaders:
The Affirmative Development of Boys and Young Men of Color.
April 30 through June 2, 2009
Dillard University
New Orleans, LA
While in New Orleans my colleagues and I also visited the
venerable St. Augustine School for young men and the
Miller-McCoy Academy for Mathematics and Business. We
witnessed many examples of affirmative development while at these
three schools. Also, I am pleased to announce that a representative
group of young men from each school will play important roles at
the gathering. This will not be a conference that just talks about
boys and young men of color; it will authentically involve them in
the fabric of the gathering.
I am pleased to announce the following highlights in what will be a
very powerful agenda:
- The unveiling of a distinctive set of standards designed by Dr.
Pedro Noguera, Dr. Edward Fergus and others from the Metro
Center at New York University.
- A robust roster of interactive workshops. In order to ensure a
deeply impacting learning experience for conference
participants, COSEBOC is extending a Call For Workshop
Proposals. For those of you who are interested in presenting a
workshop please go to "Call for Workshop Proposals" for
guidance on submitting your proposal.
- A premiering of a new film, Men to Boys (Click HERE to view
the trailer) inspired by a new book titled 101 Things Boys of
Color Should Know. The filmmaker, Janks Morton and the
author, LaMarr Darnell Shields will be in attendance to
facilitate a discussion following the premiere.
- An appearance by Dalton Sherman, the student who made the
stirring presentation to several thousand Dallas Public School
educators. View the video on Youtube. We expect that Dalton
will inspire us in a similar fashion.
- A presentation by Susan Taylor, founder of National CARES
Mentoring Movement and Editor-in-Chief Emeritus of Essence
Magazine.
The response to this conference has been enthusiastically positive.
Prompt registration is advised to reserve your place. Join us in
our effort to create a national movement determined to ensure
positive outcomes for boys and young men of color.
See you in New Orleans.
Ron Walker
Executive Director, COSEBOC
About COSEBOC
COSEBOC intends to develop a collaborative network of schools
that nurture success in boys of color. Working with these schools,
COSEBOC is committed to high standards, exemplary instruction,
and the building of coalitions within and outside the community.
The intended long-term outcome of this coalition will be boys of
color who are fully equipped to achieve academically, socially and
emotionally. These schools will serve as models for the educational
community, enabling educators to replicate the promising
practices modeled in these schools.
