psychiatrists take a walk. "People
are always coming to us with their
guilt and fears," one says, "but we
have no one to go to with our
problems. Since we're all
professionals, why don't we hear
each other out right-now?" They agree that this is a good idea.
The first psychiatrist confesses,
"I'm a compulsive shopper and
deeply in debt, so I over bill
patients as often as I can." The second admits, "I have a drug
problem that's out of control, and I
frequently pressure my patients
into buying illegal drugs for me." The third psychiatrist says, "I
know it's wrong, but no matter how
hard I try, I just can't keep a
secret." Submit your own humor, and let our

ALL of these children have hidden or untapped talents and potential. The After School Program handout www.cap4kids.org/philadelphia on Cap4Kids
http://www.cap4kids.org/philadelphia/parent_handouts/after_school_programs_camps.html lists hundreds of activities to help children and teens realize their potentials
and at the same time decrease their risk taking behaviors. From Squash to Tennis,
Horse Back Riding to Training for Marathons, Mural Art making to Music recording. The programs are many and the need is many. PLEASE help families in need find
specific activities that interest our children and use the Cap4Kids After School
handout to help bridge the gap between families in need and the social service
agencies that serve them. In Philadelphia, and listed on the www.cap4kids.org/philadelphia website, there are so many resources for families in need that it is sometimes overwhelming to cover many of the issues that our families face as we try to link families in need with the social service agencies that serve them. To help, under the Resource tab, http://www.cap4kids.org/philadelphia/resources.html , we have added Cap4Kids Parent Questionnaires that you can post in your office, exam rooms, schools, and community centers to let families know what issues we can help them with in their community. entrepreneurial activities that provide exposure to the principles of a green economy.
The “Green Peace Project” promotes an environment that demonstrably shows the
correlation between; preservation and responsibility; and economic development
and community esteem. The program seeks as a mission to establish a multitude of
gardens throughout the city of Philadelphia, utilizing discarded or dysfunctional
space. The land is cultivated and developed to yield marketable provisions and
provide communities healthy options. The gardens include seating areas and
sculptured universal peace symbols to provide communities with peaceful
eco-friendly space. The program advances the proposition of using
community-connectivity to spur economic growth and progress. Goals: The three-month series teaches participants; the study of pedology; the tenets of
agriculture; entrepreneurial dexterity; and community prosperity. Participants will
gain knowledge in self-sufficiency, self-determination, ethics and business. Facts: Urban Agriculture 50% of the world’s population lives in cities. 800 million people are involved in urban agriculture worldwide and contribute to
feeding urban residents. Low-income urban dwellers spend between 40% and 60% of their income on food
each year. By 2015 about 26 cities in the world are expected to have a population of 10 million
or more. To feed a city of this size – at least 6000 tons of food must be imported each
day. Contact House Of Umoja 215-473-5893 ----- Coalition members! College Prep Scholarship awards include the following: full scholarships to college summer school programs at Harvard University, Stanford University, the University of Notre Dame, and Yale University; college admissions counseling provided by QuestBridge; invitations to QuestBridge College Admissions Conferences at Stanford and Yale; and all-expense-paid visits to top-ranked colleges The scholarship application is due on March 31, 2009. Visit our group for more information The Coalition, Inc. Group Philadelphia Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity is once again seeking applicants for its annual Hiliary H. Holloway, Esquire Scholarship Award program. The chapter's scholarship program, named after the late Hiliary H. Holloway, Esquire, a past Grand Polemarch and Laurel Wreath recipient of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, as well as a longtime member of the Philadelphia Alumni Chapter, is designed to aid promising minority male students in the public high schools of Philadelphia who are planning to matriculate in college following their graduation from high school. Applications and further info can be obtained from the student's Principal or guidance counselor. All applications must be postmarked by April 4, 2009 to be considered. The amount of the scholarship award is $2,000. A total of four $2,000 scholarships will be awarded in 2009. The fraternity uses the scholarship grants to enhance the opportunities for minority males to acquire a college education. The organization seeks to reach and assist those young men who have demonstrated academic promise, but have not necessarily accumulated the highest averages. Additionally, the need for financial assistance is fundamental. Students who meet these criteria should contact their Principal or guidance counselor about this scholarship opportunity immediately. An application can also be downloaded from the Philadelphia Alumni Chapter's web site: http://www.phillykappas.org ----- Coalition members! We are thrilled to see that the organizers have
responded to Community-Campus Partnerships for Health’s (CCPH) comments on last year's summer institute. When the 1st NIH institute on CBPR was announced, CCPH expressed concern about its exclusive focus on academic
researchers. In CBPR, the community is involved at the very start of the research, so it was incongruent that the institute did not include the community partners or acknowledge the possibility of a
community partner as a principal investigator or co-PI. This summer's institute has been designed for community-academic partner teams (see below for details). CCPH has successfully implemented community-academic partner team-based model of CBPR training: http://depts.washington.edu/ccph/pdf_files/2005CBPRInstituteApp3-25.pdf and http://depts.washington.edu/ccph/pdf_files/2005%20Summer%20Institute%20Agenda.pdf The training curriculum, "Developing and Sustaining CBPR Partnerships" is available online at www.cbprcurriculum.info. Get ‘Your’web link on The Coalition, Inc. web site ----- Local Church Seeks Proposals to Fund Community Projects Do you or your organization have an idea how to help your neighbors in these difficult economic times but need a small grant to get your idea moving? First United Methodist Church of Germantown (FUMCOG) is looking to support projects that promote social justice and peace in the local community. By setting aside our Easter offering, we hope to award several small grants of a few hundred to a few thousand dollars to help facilitate worthy community endeavors. All proposals are welcome and are reviewed by a committee of church members. Selection criteria in awarding grants include the size of the population to be served, the nature of the services provided, and expected benefits to the community. Grants from previous Easter and Christmas collections have been awarded on a nondenominational basis to a diverse group of applicants for a wide variety of causes. Monies from the recent Christmas Collection were used to: assist home repairs for senior citizens, support breast health in underserved neighborhoods, help address the racial achievement gap in the city, and to help promote healthier eating in some of the Philadelphia schools. Application forms can be obtained by calling the office of First United Methodist Church of Germantown at (215) 438-3677, or request a form online at WWW.FUMCOG.org For consideration, completed proposals must be returned to the church office at 6001 Germantown Ave., no later than Friday, March 13, 2009. Organizations with non-profit tax-exempt status should include a copy of their 501-3c certification. Recipients will be notified of their selection by April 3rd. Funds should be awarded by early May. ----- Coalition members! These seminars are held only twice a year and are intended to help demystify the application and review process, clarify federal regulations and policies, and highlight current areas of special interest or concern. Approximately 25 leading policy, program, and grants management officials from NIH and HHS will share their expertise and guidance. In conjunction with the 2-day seminar, the NIH is offering attendees the option of participating in eRA Computer Workshops designed to provide hands-on experience in utilizing the eRA Commons for administrators and investigators. The workshops are geared towards administrators, principal investigators and assistants with little or no eSubmission or eRA Commons experience and focus on how to use the electronic systems to facilitate application/grant administration. However, space is limited. If you miss out on the opportunity to attend the workshops, don't fret...eRA staff will be on hand throughout the 2-day seminar at the eRA booth, during breaks & meals, and much of the material will be presented as part of the seminar itself. Early registration is highly recommended. Except for a visit to NIH, there is not another opportunity like the NIH Regional Seminars to interact with this many experts, ready to provide you with the latest policy and process news first-hand. Though there are a number of companies and organizations that have donated moneys for scholarship use to African Americans, a great deal of the money is being returned because of a lack of interest. No one is going to knock on our doors and ask if we can use a scholarship. Take the initiative to get your children involved. There is no need for money to be returned to donating companies because we fail to apply for it. Please pass this information on to family members, nieces, nephews, and friends with children etc. We must get the word out that money is available. If you are a college student or getting ready to become one, you probably already know how useful additional money can be. Our youth really could use these scholarships. Thanks!! April 30 through June 2, 2009 Dillard University While in New Orleans my colleagues and I also visited the venerable St. Augustine
School for young men and the Miller-McCoy Academy for Mathematics and
Business. We witnessed many examples of affirmative development while at these
three schools. Also, I am pleased to announce that a representative group of young
men from each school will play important roles at the gathering. This will not be a
conference that just talks about boys and young men of color; it will authentically
involve them in the fabric of the gathering. I am pleased to announce the following highlights in what will be a very powerful
agenda:
The response to this conference has been enthusiastically positive. Prompt
registration is advised to reserve your place. Join us in our effort to create a national
movement determined to ensure positive outcomes for boys and young men of
color.
