"Everybody  can be great, because everybody can serve. You don't have to have a college  degree to serve. You don't have to make your subject and your verb agree to  serve. You don't have to know about Plato and Aristotle to serve. You don't  have to know Einstein's theory of relativity to serve. You don't have to know  the second theory of thermodynamics in physics to serve. You only need a  heart full of grace, a soul generated by love. And you can be that  servant." - Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

The new  employee stood before the paper shredder looking confused. "Need some  help?" a secretary, walking by, asked. "Yes," he replied,  "how does this thing work?" "Simple," she said, taking  the fat report from his hand and feeding it into the shredder. "Thanks,  but where do the copies come out?"

Two old ladies have played bridge together for many years,  and naturally they have gotten to know each other pretty well. One day,  during a game of cards, one lady suddenly looks up at the other and says,  "I realize we've known each other for many years, but for the life of  me, I just can't bring it to mind... would you please tell me your name  again, dear?" There is dead silence for a couple of minutes, then the  other lady responds, "How soon do you need to know?"

Not everyone is healthy  enough to have a front row seat in our lives.

There are some people in  you life that need to be loved from a distance.

It’s amazing what you can  accomplish when you let go of, or at least minimize,

your time with draining  negative, incompatible, not-going-anywhere relationships, friendships.

Observe the relationships  around you. Pay attention. Which ones lift and which ones lean?

Which ones encourage and  which ones discourage?

Which ones are on a path of  growth uphill and which ones are going downhill?

When you leave certain  people do you feel better or worse?

Which ones always have  drama or don’t really understand, know or appreciate you?

The more you seek quality,  respect, growth, peace of mind, love and truth around you,

the easier it will become  for you to decide who gets to sit in the front row

and who should be moved to  the balcony of your life.

“If you cannot ‘change’ the people  around you, change the people that you are around”

Male Student Mentoring Initiative (MSMI)

Pilot Project Description

The  Male Student Mentoring Initiative (MSMI) is a Circle of Care sponsored  leadership training Pilot Project of Liberation Fellowship Community  Development Corporation. The Project seeks to provide leadership training and  mentoring infused with STD and HIV/AIDS awareness education to separate  groups of 10 middle and 10 senior high school males in the Germantown and  Mount Airy sections of Philadelphia. The Project is grounded in a leadership  development-training curriculum that stresses personal responsibility and  accountability for being progressive leaders and positive role models in the  school and larger community. STD and HIV/AIDS education and prevention strategies  will be explored as part of the students’ work product, which will require  them to produce an education event for their peers and parents. The ultimate  goals of this Pilot Project are to:

1)    Determine whether progress can be made in affecting responsible  behavior change in the students; and

2) Decide the feasibility of refining and  expanding the Pilot into a fully integrated project of the Circle of Care  that will provide leadership development opportunities for young people.

AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM

In Philadelphia there are many latchkey children,  children without role models, sedentary children, and Generation I (internet)  children spending hours in front of a screen (TV and/or computer). ALL of  these children have hidden or untapped talents and potential.

The After School Program handout www.cap4kids.org/philadelphia  on Cap4Kids http://www.cap4kids.org/philadelphia/parent_handouts/after_school_programs_camps.html  lists hundreds of activities to help children and teens realize their  potentials and at the same time decrease their risk taking behaviors. From  Squash to Tennis, Horse Back Riding to Training for Marathons, Mural Art  making to Music recording.

The programs are many and the need is many. PLEASE  help families in need find specific activities that interest our children and  use the Cap4Kids After School handout to help bridge the gap between families  in need and the social service agencies that serve them.

In Philadelphia, and  listed on the

 www.cap4kids.org/philadelphia  website,

there are so many  resources for families in need that it is sometimes overwhelming to cover  many of the issues that our families face as we try to link families in need  with the social service agencies that serve them.

To help, under the  Resource tab, http://www.cap4kids.org/philadelphia/resources.html  ,

we have added Cap4Kids  Parent Questionnaires that you can post in your office, exam rooms, schools,  and community centers to let families know what issues we can help them with  in their community.

628 Bainbridge Street

Philadelphia, PA

Join Art Sanctuary for a  Groundbreaking Celebration of its new center, at 16th and Bainbridge  Streets.  In tandem with the Church of  the Advocate, home venue for large performances, this building will give Art  Sanctuary staff its own offices for the first time in 10 years; it will allow  them to put on film screenings and book signings, and give them a new space  for workshops and classrooms as well as the ability to record music and  spoken word, and exhibit visual art. The Advocate gave Art Sanctuary a great  and grand entrance; this will give us a place to call our own.

You have been a part of  this plan, so please join us! Our special friends, donors and funders will be  there, as well as special guest Hannibal Lokumbe, composer of "A  Shepherd Among Us," based on the life of the Advocate's Rev. Paul  Washington.

HEALTH MATTERS

(If you, a friend,  or loved one are trying to kick the habit of smoking, please pay attention to  this column over the next few weeks.)

Secondhand Smoke Is A  Major Concern
 01-Mar-2008

(BlackDoctor.org)  -- Although secondhand smoke has been linked to death and illness, a new  study suggests that parents around the world do very little to protect their  children from “passive smoking” exposure.

Heather  Wipfli, Ph.D., project director at the Institute for Global Tobacco Control  at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, and colleagues  conducted home surveys in 31 countries.

Researchers  examined the smoking histories of the adults in the homes, exposures to  secondhand smoke inside the house and in the community, and attitudes toward  smoking. They used air-sampling technology to gauge nicotine levels in homes  and hair samples to measure individual exposure levels of non-smoking women  and children.

The study  appears in the April issue of the American Journal of Public Health.

Concentrations  of nicotine in the air were 17 times higher in households with smokers  compared to those without, and nicotine concentrations were about 12.9 times  higher in homes that permitted smoking compared to households that  voluntarily banned it.

Researchers  found nicotine even in homes without smokers, indicating that visitors and  others sometimes smoked in the homes.

Children had  higher levels of nicotine than women did, and among children living with a  smoker, those under 5 years old had levels nearly twice as high as children  ages 5 and older did.

The United  States and Western Europe were not included in the study, which comprised  seven Eastern European countries, nine countries in North and South America,  12 Asian countries and three in the Middle East.

In study  countries, nearly all households permitted smoking inside, which represents a  major difference from the United States, where surveys by the Centers for  Disease Control and Prevention show that more than 80 percent of homes no  longer allow smoking inside the living area.

This study  is among the first to demonstrate that secondhand smoke is a worldwide  concern, according to Kenneth Rosenman, M.D., professor of medicine at  Michigan State University.

Educational  programs have helped to achieve the large proportions of U.S. households that  do not allow indoor smoking and the results of this study, according to  Rosenman, should lead health organizations in other countries to step up  education activities aimed at increasing voluntary no-smoking policies.

“It is clear  from this study that if one is going to continue to smoke, then don’t smoke  at home and particularly not around your children,” Rosenman said. “If my  patient is not the smoker, it is important that they insist those that do  smoke don’t do so in the house or around them.” He was not associated with  the study.

“Our  research clearly shows that parents are failing to protect their children  from secondhand smoke exposure, perhaps because they are unaware of the  risks,” Wipfli said. “The results highlight the need to improve public  awareness of the importance to go outside to smoke to limit the exposure of  women and children living in the home.”

GRANTS, SCHOLARSHIPS  & INSTRUCTION

Helping Local Businesses Survive a Bad Economy

Should local businesses  use the Internet to become more profitable?

Hosted by the Greater  Germantown Business Association

Philadelphia, PA, --- 7  million Americans are “heavy” social media contributors (6+ activities) who  connect with 248 people on a ‘one to many’ basis in a typical week.  The percent of time people spend  communicating online has increased 18% since 2006, while time spent on  entertainment had declined 29 percent 1

“The problem is most small  business owners do not realize that their customer pool is online looking for  them,” says business owner, JC Lamkin, President, Gypsy Lane Technologies  (GLT) and member of the Greater Germantown Business Association (GGBA).  "A quick drive down the 8200 to 5100  blocks of Germantown Avenue in Philadelphia will result in the realization  that our area businesses are quickly folding.  But, if you take a cruise on social media websites, you will  begin to understand why ... prospective customers are online.  These days, it's not just about having a  website or the plummeting DJIA (Dow Jones Industrial Average).  It is about connecting with customers,  establishing your brand as a leader in your industry and building  relationships online.  Additionally,  many business owners don't realize that their customers are online discussing  their product and service needs. Social media sites are now allowing businesses  to develop relationships with customers.   Business owners just need to learn how to properly build a strategy  and tap into that customer pool."

To address the concerns  around closing Philadelphia area businesses, the Greater Germantown Business  Association welcomes all to attend the

Free Greater Germantown  Business Association’s regular monthly meetings held on the second

Tuesday of every month;

and, begins at

7:00 p.m. sharp with  updates,

the workshop immediately  follows.

Meeting adjourns at 8:00  p.m.

This interactive workshop  will be facilitated by tech expert, JC Lamkin, PMP, president of Gypsy Lane  Technologies (GLT), a professional Internet solutions company headquartered  in the Germantown section of Philadelphia with training offices in  Philadelphia and King of Prussia, PA. GLT specializes in best-in-class  database development, website development, social media strategies,  webcasting, online marketing, Flash multimedia and content management  solutions. GLT features an integrated team of web consultants, creative  designers, writers, coders and marketing professionals who know how to get  online results.

Ms.  Lamkin will also be available to sign copies of her book, “Fabulous &  Tech-Filled, Volume 1”.  Additional  Social Media for Business workshops

Student Achievement and Learning & Leadership Grants

NEA Foundation Accepting  Applications for Student Achievement and Learning & Leadership Grants  Programs

Deadline: October 15, 2009

The NEA Foundation (http://www.neafoundation.org/)  supports a variety of efforts by teachers, education support professionals,  and higher education faculty and staff to improve student learning in public  schools, colleges, and universities across the United States.

The foundation is  accepting applications for the following grant programs:

The Learning &  Leadership Grants program provides opportunities for teachers, education  support professionals, and higher education faculty and staff to engage in  high-quality professional development and lead their colleagues in  professional growth.  Grants to  individuals fund participation in professional development experiences such  as summer institutes and action research. Grants to groups fund collegial  study, including study groups, action research, lesson study, and mentoring  experiences for faculty or staff new to an assignment. The grant amount is  $2,000 for individuals and $5,000 for groups.

The Student Achievement  Grants program provides grants of $5,000 each to improve the academic achievement  of students by engaging in critical thinking and problem solving that deepen  knowledge of standards-based subject matter. The work should also improve  students’ habits of inquiry, self-directed learning, and critical reflection.  Proposals for work resulting in low-income and minority student success with  honors, advanced placement, and other challenging curricula are particularly  encouraged. Grant funds may be used for resource materials, supplies,  equipment, transportation, software, and scholars-in-residence.

Applicants must be  practicing U.S. public school teachers in grades K-12, public school  education support professionals, or faculty and staff at public higher  education institutions.

NIH Summer Institute on  Community-Based Participatory Research

The National Institutes of  Health has announced the 2nd summer institute. We are thrilled to see that  the organizers have responded to Community-Campus Partnerships for Health’s  (CCPH) comments on last year's summer institute.

When the 1st NIH institute  on CBPR was announced, CCPH expressed concern about its exclusive focus on  academic researchers.

In CBPR, the community is  involved at the very start of the research,

so it was incongruent that  the institute did not include the community partners or acknowledge the  possibility of a community partner as a principal investigator or co-PI.

This summer's institute  has been designed for community-academic partner teams (see below for  details).

CCPH has successfully  implemented community-academic partner team-based model of CBPR training:

http://depts.washington.edu/ccph/pdf_files/2005CBPRInstituteApp3-25.pdf

and http://depts.washington.edu/ccph/pdf_files/2005%20Summer%20Institute%20Agenda.pdf

The training curriculum,  "Developing and Sustaining CBPR Partnerships" is available online  at www.cbprcurriculum.info.

If you're interested in  bringing a CBPR training workshop or institute to your location, contact CCPH  senior consultant Rachel Vaughn at sliccph@mcw.edu  for more information.

AFRICAN AMERICAN STUDENTS  ARE NOT APPLYING FOR SCHOLARSHIPS

Even if you do not have a  college-aged child at home, please share this with someone who does, pass  this scholarship information on to anyone and everyone that comes to mind.  Though there are a number of companies and organizations that have donated  moneys for scholarship use to African Americans, a great deal of the money is  being returned because of a lack of interest.

No one is going to knock  on our doors and ask if we can use a scholarship.

Take the initiative to get  your children involved. There is no need for money to be returned to donating  companies because we fail to apply for it.

Please pass this  information on to family members, nieces, nephews, and friends with children  etc. We must get the word out that money is available. If you are a college  student or getting ready to become one, you probably already know how useful  additional money can be.

Our  youth really could use these scholarships. Thanks!!

SpotLight ON OUR EFFORTS

Physicians For Social Responsibility’s

LEGS AGAINST ARMS 5K RUN/WALK

As  an outgrowth of our commitment to eliminate the epidemic of youth violence in  Philadelphia, Physicians for Social Responsibility (PSR) is hosting Legs Against  Arms, a 5K Race/Walk, at La Salle University on April 26, 2009.  We will  strengthen our legs while opposing illegal handguns in Philadelphia.   Individuals, families and teams are encouraged to participate as activists  and advocates for a future filled with hope, not harm.  Trish McDermott  was murdered at 9th and Chestnut Streets in 2005 and her family wanted a way  to celebrate her life rather than her traumatic death. At LAA II in 2008,  Team Trish was formed in her memory.  PSR and Team Trish invite you to  continue this tradition and get a team together to honor and celebrate the  life of a loved on lost to violence.  Any proceeds support PSR’s ongoing  violence prevention initiatives.

Summer  Youth Program

Program Description
In 1992, The Food Project began been  bringing young people from the city and the suburbs together to make a  difference in the lives of people in Greater Boston and on the North  Shore. Each year, a diverse group of 90 youth, ages 14-17, enter  The Food Project’s Summer Youth Program  and work to grow and distribute tens of thousands of pounds of produce for  people in need.  For many, it is a first job, and working in crews of  eight to ten, the youth gain invaluable skills of teamwork, accountability,  civic participation, and communication.

During the six weeks, youth manage over 40  acres of land including suburban farms and remediated urban lots,  sell produce through farmers' markets and a Community Supported Agriculture  program, prepare and serve lunches in local soup kitchens and homeless  shelters, and help to prepare community lunches, where neighbors, youth,  staff, and visitors come together to share the harvest. Youth also participate  in four workshops each week, covering issues of diversity awareness, hunger  and homelessness, sustainable agriculture, and personal reflection.

Through shared labor and structured activities, youth  develop a respect for themselves and for peers from very different  backgrounds, while acquiring a connection to food and the land.

In  response to the needs of many grassroots organizations for the basic tools to  implement and sustain their ideas and projects, The Coalition, Inc. members  have come together to establish a network to facilitate the  distribution/re-distribution of unwanted, unneeded, surplus and even repairable  items for recycling.

·       If you have office supplies, electronics, office furniture, you are  updating, or no longer use, free up that space by offering them to someone  who can get good use from it.

·       If you have office space you do not have an immediate use for, offer  it to home-based organizations for a few hours a week as a meeting place.

·       If you have special skills such as grant/proposal writing, website  design/maintenance, or computer skills, please Contact Us share  your expertise and educate others.

·       If your organization offers aid to the less fortunate such as meals,

clothing, resume' writing, job search, SAT/LSAT  coaching, GED classes, scholarship help etc., share it Here
