and we took off for the
airport. We were driving in
the right lane when
suddenly a car jumped out
of a parking space right in
front of us. My taxi driver
slammed on his breaks,
skidded, and missed the
other car by just inches!
The driver of the other car
whipped his head around
and started yelling at us.
My taxi driver just smiled
and waved at the guy. And I
mean he was really
friendly. So I asked, "Why did you
just do that? This guy
almost ruined your car and
sent us to the hospital!"
This is when my taxi driver
taught me what I now call
"The Law of the Garbage
Truck." He explained that many
people are like garbage
trucks. They run around
full of garbage, full of
frustration, full of anger,
and full of disappointment.
As their garbage piles up,
they need a place to dump
it and sometimes they'll
dump it on you. Don't take
it personally. Just smile,
wave, wish them well, and
move on. Don't take their
garbage and spread it to
other people at work, at
home, or on the streets. The bottom line is that
successful people do not
let garbage trucks take
over their day. Life's too
short to wake up in the
morning with regrets, so...
"Love the people who treat
you right. Pray for the
ones who don't." Life is
ten percent what you make
it and ninety percent how
you take it!

By using fruit to satisfy our taste for sweetness, we can leave behind the use of chemical, processed and refined sweeteners. Fruits
are easy to digest, are cleansing and cooling and are great for those who are
overstressed and overheated from excessive mental strain or hot climates. Fruits are filled with fiber and liver stimulants, which act as natural, gentle laxatives.
Whenever possible, buy fresh, locally grown fruit as opposed to imported fruits
shipped from far-off places. This keeps you eating in season, and more in harmony
with your environment and climate. Fruit in the form of juice is a great choice for cleansing the body, but be aware that
juice rapidly raises blood sugar levels, leading to an energy crash soon after. Frozen, whole, puréed or juiced fruit can make great summertime cool-down treats. Try frozen grapes, banana-coconut smoothie popsicles or lime juice ice-cubes in iced tea!

Community Development Corporation is offering free trees to residents in the Logan
community. The types of trees were carefully selected and approved by the Fairmount Park
Commission, and are especially designed for inner city environments. They do not
grow very tall and their roots do not penetrate gas, water or drain lines. The actual
planting of these trees will be in the early to late spring. To obtain trees, the coverage area must be surveyed to determine what type of
approved trees can be planted and a Pennsylvania One Call Inspection must be
completed to locate utilities. The coverage area will be designed by a landscape
architect who will plan the planting locations of the trees. For more information, email here or call 215-457-3014. ----- Coalition members! Activate ‘Your’web link on The Coalition, Inc. web site ----- Recycling Services Inc. in Pottstown takes styrofoam on Saturday and Tuesday

We are thrilled to see that the organizers have
responded to Community-Campus Partnerships for Health’s (CCPH) comments on last year's summer institute. When the 1st NIH institute on CBPR was announced, CCPH expressed concern about its exclusive focus on academic
researchers. In CBPR, the community is involved at the very start of the research, so it was incongruent that the institute did not include the community partners or acknowledge the possibility of a
community partner as a principal investigator or co-PI. This summer's institute has been designed for community-academic partner teams (see below for details). CCPH has successfully implemented community-academic partner team-based
model of CBPR training: http://depts.washington.edu/ccph/pdf_files/2005CBPRInstituteApp3-25.pdf and

someone who does, pass this scholarship information on to anyone and everyone
that comes to mind. Though there are a number of companies and organizations
that have donated moneys for scholarship use to African Americans, a great deal of
the money is being returned because of a lack of interest. No one is going to knock on our doors and ask if we can use a scholarship. Take the initiative to get your children involved. There is no need for money to be
returned to donating companies because we fail to apply for it. Please pass this information on to family members, nieces, nephews, and friends
with children etc. We must get the word out that money is available. If you are a
college student or getting ready to become one, you probably already know how
useful additional money can be. Our youth really could use these scholarships. Thanks!! For a list of scholarships please visit our group ‘The Coalition, Inc.’

celebrated during the Muskogee Juneteenth Jazz & Arts Festival, hosted by the
Oklahoma Juneteenth Historical Foundation (OJHF), on Thursday, June 11, 2009,
during National Association of Juneteenth Jazz Presenters (NAJJP) announces
"Celebrating Juneteenth Jazz", an African-American jazz legacy preservation
initiative during Black Music Month. Juneteenth is officially recognized as a state
holiday observance in Oklahoma, joining a total of 31 states and the District of
Columbia in the recognition of America's 2nd Independence Day. The festival is a fundraiser for the Muskogee Juneteenth Celebration. The event is
sponsored by the National Association of Juneteenth Jazz Presenters (NAJJP) and
is scheduled to take place at the Oklahoma Music Hall of Fame, 401 South 3rd Street. Muskogee, Oklahoma A special Juneteenth Art Exhibit will be on display from 2:00pm - 9:00pm. The jazz concert will begin at 7:00pm. Juneteenth commemorates the day when slaves in the last geographic area in America where
slavery existed learned of their freedom. This took place on June 19, 1865, in
Galveston, Texas, when Union General Gordon Granger read General Order #3,
announcing that "all slaves are free" by Proclamation of President Abraham
Lincoln. The Emancipation Proclamation was signed by President Abraham Lincoln
on September 22, 1862, and issued on January 1, 1863. It took over two and a half
years for the news to travel to southwest Texas. The National Juneteenth Holiday
Campaign continues to work to establish Juneteenth as a national holiday
observance in America. The festival is in honor of the late Muskogee jazz legend, Jay McShann. "Jay McShann is one of the greatest Kansas City jazz icons in history," states Rev.
Ronald V. Myers, Sr., M.D., Founder & Chairman of the National Juneteenth
Observance Foundation (NJOF) and the National Juneteenth Holiday Campaign.
"The preservation Muskogee's African American jazz legacy is why the annual
Muskogee Juneteenth Jazz & Arts Festival will be taking place every year." The festival's featured artist will be accomplished jazz pianist and trumpet player,
Rev. Ronald V. Myers, Sr., M.D. A modern day renaissance man, Dr. Myers is a
minister, physician and jazz musician, and the National Juneteenth Jazz Artist.
Myers will be joined by Mississippi native percussionist Wilton Knott, along with
jazz drummer and percussionist Aye Aton, formerly with the legendary Sun Ra
Arkestra, bassist Derrick Brown, saxophonist Sayeed Jamal and Cuban
percussionist Earlton Battles. Also performing will be the Juneteenth African Dance Ensemble, Directed by
Margaret Nana Yaa Baker, the Juneteenth Community Praise Choir, with Minister of
Music, Eugene Brown and Muskogee's own Retro Boys Rappers. The festival will also feature a special Juneteenth Art Exhibit by National Juneteenth
Visual Artist, Alvin Carter with local Muskogee native artist Jason Terrell. Food will
be provided for purchase as part of the fundraiser by Robert Newton, Chairman of
the National Juneteenth Bar-b-que Commission, owner of Muskogee's Smokehouse
Bob's Bar-b-que Restaurant. Tickets are available for a suggested donation of $15.00 per person and $20.00 per
couple at Smokehouse Bob's Bar-b-que Restaurant, 1100 N. 11th Street, in
