for labeling homemade
freezer meals. I used to
carefully note in large clear
letters, "Meatloaf" or "Pot
Roast" or "Steak and
Vegetables or "Chicken and
Dumplings" or "Beef Pot
Pie." However, I used to get very
frustrated when I asked my
husband what he wanted
for dinner because he never
asked for any of those
things. So, I decided to
stock the freezer with what
he really likes. If you look in my freezer
now you'll see a whole new
set of labels. You'll find
dinners with neat, legible
tags that say: "Whatever," "Anything," "I Don't Know,"
"I Don't Care," "Something
Good," or "Food." My frustration is
reduced because no matter
what my husband replies
when I ask him what he
wants for dinner, I know
that it will be there

were very tired. They found a hotel,
rented a room and went to sleep.
Then, this old guy comes in out of
nowhere, and says there is a magic
pool just outside their hotel room.
He tells them "Ok, you must jump
off the diving board, and yell out
what you wanna land in." So the three guys go over to the
pool. The first guy, a vegetarian,
yells out "Bananas!" and lands in
a pool of bananas. The second guy
was money hungry and yelled out
"Money!" and lands in a pile of
money. The third guy jumps and
realizing he was jumping into an
empty pool without planning what

Greetings Coalition Family! Superintendent Dr. Arlene Ackerman formally withdrew the School District’s proposal to close William Penn High School*. This means that the School District will not move forward with plans to permanently close William Penn High School!! Instead, Dr. Ackerman recommended that the District focus on two options for William Penn High School: 1) renovating the Broad Street building which is currently in use and the gymnasium; or 2) demolishing all structures and building a new school at the current location. *The District and the SRC noted yesterday that the school may have to close for a year or two to address renovation and/or construction issues before a renovated or new facility is operational. Here’s hoping that we are all imbued with the spirits of cooperation and collaboration, multiplying our effectiveness. The foundation is accepting applications for the following grant programs: The Learning & Leadership Grants program provides opportunities for teachers, education support professionals, and higher education faculty and staff to engage in high-quality professional development and lead their colleagues in professional growth. Grants to individuals fund participation in professional development experiences such as summer institutes and action research. Grants to groups fund collegial study, including study groups, action research, lesson study, and mentoring experiences for faculty or staff new to an assignment. We are thrilled to see that the organizers have
responded to Community-Campus Partnerships for Health’s (CCPH) comments on last year's summer institute. When the 1st NIH institute on CBPR was announced, CCPH expressed concern about its exclusive focus on academic
researchers. In CBPR, the community is involved at the very start of the research, so it was incongruent that the institute did not include the community partners or acknowledge the possibility of a
community partner as a principal investigator or co-PI. This summer's institute has been designed for community-academic partner teams (see below for details). Activate ‘Your’web link on The Coalition, Inc. web site ----- AFRICAN AMERICAN STUDENTS ARE NOT APPLYING FOR SCHOLARSHIPS Even if you do not have a college-aged child at home, please share this with someone who does, pass this scholarship information on to anyone and everyone that comes to mind. Though there are a number of companies and organizations that have donated moneys for scholarship use to African Americans, a great deal of the money is being returned because of a lack of interest. No one is going to knock on our doors and ask if we can use a scholarship. Take the initiative to get your children involved. There is no need for money to be returned to donating companies because we fail to apply for it. Please pass this information on to family members, nieces, nephews, and friends with children etc. We must get the word out that money is available. If you are a college student or getting ready to become one, you probably already know how useful additional money can be. Our youth really could use these scholarships. Thanks!! ARTS FOR AWARENESS Arts and Culture - When a King Dies By Nancy-Ellen Thursday’s news about Michael Jackson’s death caught us all by surprise. Somehow we expected the man, like his songs, to live forever. Somehow, all the judgmental thoughts of confusion, frustration, even anger toward Michael had little to no value when the news broke out. Somehow a part of everyone impacted by his musical genius died for a moment. That’s what happens when a king dies. Michael Jackson never owned his life. He belonged to the world at a very early age, and held the world captive because he knew and told us where the cutting edge was. He set trends, broke barriers and raised eyebrows in the process. It was the dysfunction of an aborted and controlled childhood that finally caught up with him and set the tone for a tumultuous adult life. It was a larger-than-life persona that kept him under the microscopic eye of photographers and reporters that kept him from possibly working it out. Yet despite all of that, Michael gave. He gave us lyrics that are attached to childhood memories, moves to be mimicked, and an acceptance of “high-water” pants! If Bob Marley is responsible for “One Love”, Michael Jackson is responsible for “One Glove”. Artistically, who else but Michael could blend the best moves of Sammy Davis Jr., Fred Astaire and James Brown into a signature style that would become the template for all to follow? Who else in the history of music moved with effortless ease from child prodigy to super star, without taking a break? Only a king can do that. He even dressed like royalty, donning military jackets with gold rope epaulettes and brass buttons. No one told him to, he just seemed to feel comfortable in it. Creativity oozed out of his pores as he moved to the dictates of a spirit that was one with rhythm, soul and freedom. His patented “moon-walk” captured and somehow impersonated the life of Michael…for he appeared to be advancing on the stage of life with ease, yet we watched as he was being pulled backward by an equal force, and each time we watched, it was strange, fascinating, eerie… yet remarkable. Culturally he stands head and shoulders in the ranks of other groundbreakers of the 20th century. For African-Americans, he opened doors that before him were not available to us. Not with fist clenched and angry cries, but with a talent that transcended and choked out the very root of racism. In his prime, there was no one that did not like him. To this day, no one can argue that this man was not a genius. As we mourn the loss of a king in the music industry, may we hold fast to the memories of the good things that the “King of Pop” brought to us individually and collectively, and may we all pray that Michael’s spirit finds the acceptance that only something as large and infinite as the universe can offer. and community relations, environmental/eco-friendly education, violence in communities, church and community
relationships, safety/law enforcement relations, community services and more. The conference area in this pavilion will feature an AAFC Community Cafe consisting of collaborative dialogue and
active engagement with attendees concerning family, education, health care and other issues within African American
families and communities. The AAFC values the voices within communities. The information and resources collected
will be filmed to evaluate and develop cohesive aftercare programs and assist in the initiation of legislation to improve the
