"Leadership is not magnetic personality - that can just as  well be a glib tongue. It is not "making friends and influencing  people" - that is flattery. Leadership is lifting a person's vision to  high sights, the raising of a person's performance to a higher standard, the  building of a personality beyond its normal limitations. - Peter Drucker

A Sunday school teacher was telling her class the story of the Good  Samaritan. She asked the class, 'If you saw a person lying on the roadside,  all wounded and bleeding, what would you do?'

A  thoughtful little girl broke the hushed silence, 'I think I'd throw up.'

The guy leaves. A week later, the same guy  sticks his head in the shop and asks, "How long before I can get a haircut?"  The barber looks around the shop an says, "About an hour and half."  The guy leaves. The barber looks over at a friend in the shop and says,  "Hey Bill, follow that guy and see where he goes." In a little  while, Bill comes back into the shop laughing hysterically. Hereeeeeeeeeeeeees...  Kathy!

A boss was educating an employee on effective sales technique.

"The main thing to remember is that repetition, repetition,

repetition is the keynote!" he advised. "If you have a  product to

sell, keep harping on it in every possible way, cram it down people's

throats and beat them over the head with it! Above all, don't ever

forget to repeat and repeat and repeat! It's the only way to get  results!"

"Yes, sir!" the employee answered.

"And now, what was it you came in to see me about?" the  boss asked.

The employee replied, "A Raise! A Raise! A Raise! A Raise! A  Raise! A

Raise! A Raise!"

Greetings  Coalition Family!

We recently learned that Mamie Nichols, a former member of  the GPUAC Board of Directors, passed on Wednesday, July 1, 2009.  The Memorial Service will be held Saturday,  July 11th, from 11:00AM - 12:00PM at St Simon's the Cyrenian Episcopal  Church, 22nd & Reed Streets in Philadelphia.

Ms. Nichols was the Founder and Executive Director of the  Point Breeze Federation, a nonprofit organization founded in the 1960s that  focused on neighborhood development through counseling and referrals, public  housing and community projects.

In 2001, GPUAC was proud to honor Ms. Nichols and her  organization with the Ernest E. Jones Community Leadership Award at our 32nd  Anniversary Breakfast, for her work to revitalize the Point Breeze section of  South Philadelphia.

Ms. Nichols was a part of the GPUAC family many years - as  a supporter, board member and community activist.  We will always cherish and remember the contributions she made  to improve the quality of life in Philadelphia.

You can read about Ms. Nichols’ life of service here:  http://www.philly.com/philly/obituaries/50112077.html.   Expressions of sympathy can be sent  to:  Nichols Family, 1823 Reed Street,  Philadelphia PA 19146.

Our heartfelt condolences to the family.

Sincerely,

Sharmain Matlock-Turner

President & CEO

Helping Local Businesses Survive a Bad Economy

Should local  businesses use the Internet to become more profitable?

Hosted by the  Greater Germantown Business Association

Philadelphia, PA,  --- 7 million Americans are “heavy” social media contributors (6+ activities)  who connect with 248 people on a ‘one to many’ basis in a typical week.  The percent of time people spend  communicating online has increased 18% since 2006, while time spent on  entertainment had declined 29 percent 1

“The problem is  most small business owners do not realize that their customer pool is online  looking for them,” says business owner, JC Lamkin, President, Gypsy Lane  Technologies (GLT) and member of the Greater Germantown Business Association  (GGBA).  "A quick drive down the  8200 to 5100 blocks of Germantown Avenue in Philadelphia will result in the  realization that our area businesses are quickly folding.  But, if you take a cruise on social media  websites, you will begin to understand why ... prospective customers are  online.  These days, it's not just  about having a website or the plummeting DJIA (Dow Jones Industrial  Average).  It is about connecting with  customers, establishing your brand as a leader in your industry and building  relationships online.  Additionally,  many business owners don't realize that their customers are online discussing  their product and service needs. Social media sites are now allowing  businesses to develop relationships with customers.  Business owners just need to learn how to properly build a  strategy and tap into that customer pool."

To address the  concerns around closing Philadelphia area businesses, the Greater Germantown  Business Association welcomes all to attend the

Free Greater  Germantown Business Association’s regular monthly meetings held on the

second Tuesday of  every month; and, begins at

7:00 p.m. sharp  with updates, the workshop immediately follows. Meeting adjourns at 8:00 p.m.

This interactive  workshop will be facilitated by tech expert, JC Lamkin, PMP, president of  Gypsy Lane Technologies (GLT), a professional Internet solutions company  headquartered in the Germantown section of Philadelphia with training offices  in Philadelphia and King of Prussia, PA. GLT specializes in best-in-class database  development, website development, social media strategies, webcasting, online  marketing, Flash multimedia and content management solutions. GLT features an  integrated team of web consultants, creative designers, writers, coders and  marketing professionals who know how to get online results.

Ms. Lamkin will also be available to sign copies of her  book, “Fabulous & Tech-Filled, Volume 1”.  Additional Social Media for Business workshops

Food Focus: Fruit
A healthy lifestyle is the key to longevity, optimum weight,

abundant energy and  balance.

By using fruit to  satisfy our taste for sweetness,

we can leave behind  the use of chemical, processed and refined sweeteners. Fruits are easy to  digest, are cleansing and cooling and are great for those who are  overstressed and overheated

from excessive mental  strain or hot climates.

Fruits are filled  with fiber and liver stimulants, which act as natural, gentle laxatives.  Whenever possible, buy fresh, locally grown fruit as opposed to imported  fruits shipped from far-off places. This keeps you eating in season, and more  in harmony with your environment and climate.

Eating raw fruit in summer months is highly cooling, while baking it in the  winter months neutralizes the cooling effect.

Fruit in the form  of juice is a great choice for cleansing the body, but be aware that juice  rapidly raises blood sugar levels,

leading to an  energy crash soon after.

Frozen, whole,  puréed or juiced fruit can make

great summertime  cool-down treats.

Try frozen grapes,

banana-coconut  smoothie popsicles

or lime juice ice-cubes in  iced tea!

Whether you are having fresh fruit for a light early morning breakfast, a  midday snack or evening treat, enjoy nature's sweetness and whenever possible  buy organic. Here are a few summer fruits and their health benefits:

Great for lung conditions and asthma; used to help treat anemia due to their  high copper and cobalt content.

Bananas: Help to lubricate the intestines, treat ulcers,  detoxify the body and manage sugar cravings; are rich in potassium (which  helps hypertension).

Get Fresh!

Volunteer with  Philabundance Fresh for All

You recycle out the  wazoo and consider yourself consigliore of the

enviro-sack mafia.

Hence, a cause you  can believe in: Philabundance wants to fill those ubiquitous bags with  produce through its new Fresh for All program.

And you can help by  volunteering.

The nonprofit hands  out perishables at six sites in the Delaware Valley — where nutritious diet  staples are hard to come by,

especially in tough  times.

With a minimum  three-hour commitment, you’ll keep busy.

Help with admin,  approve clients, or do community outreach (posting mailings, making phone  calls).

Looking for  something physical?

Take food to sites,  divide apples, and dole out the goods.

You’ll be doing a  major part to help people get the fruits and veggies they need.

And that’s a green  movement to be proud of.

To participate in  Fresh for All, contact

Tunisia  Garnett (215-339-0900 ext. 238 or

GRANTS, SCHOLARSHIPS  & INSTRUCTION

Student Achievement and Learning & Leadership Grants

NEA Foundation  Accepting Applications for Student Achievement and Learning & Leadership  Grants Programs

Deadline: October  15, 2009

The NEA Foundation  (http://www.neafoundation.org/)  supports a variety of efforts by teachers, education support professionals,  and higher education faculty and staff to improve student learning in public  schools, colleges, and universities across the United States.

The foundation is  accepting applications for the following grant programs:

The Learning &  Leadership Grants program provides opportunities for teachers, education support  professionals, and higher education faculty and staff to engage in  high-quality professional development and lead their colleagues in  professional growth.  Grants to  individuals fund participation in professional development experiences such  as summer institutes and action research. Grants to groups fund collegial  study, including study groups, action research, lesson study, and mentoring  experiences for faculty or staff new to an assignment. The grant amount is  $2,000 for individuals and $5,000 for groups.

The Student  Achievement Grants program provides grants of $5,000 each to improve the  academic achievement of students by engaging in

critical thinking and problem solving that deepen  knowledge of standards-based subject matter. The work should also improve  students’ habits of inquiry, self-directed learning, and critical reflection.  Proposals for work resulting in low-income and minority student success with  honors, advanced placement, and other challenging curricula are particularly  encouraged. Grant funds may be used for resource materials, supplies,  equipment, transportation, software, and scholars-in-residence.

Applicants must be  practicing U.S. public school teachers in grades K-12, public school  education support professionals, or faculty and staff at public higher  education institutions.

Visit the NEA  Foundation Web site for complete grant program information.

NIH Summer Institute on  Community-Based Participatory Research

The National Institutes of  Health has announced the 2nd summer institute. We are thrilled to see that  the organizers have responded to Community-Campus Partnerships for Health’s  (CCPH) comments on last year's summer institute.

When the 1st NIH institute  on CBPR was announced, CCPH expressed concern about its exclusive focus on  academic researchers.

In CBPR, the community is  involved at the very start of the research,

so it was incongruent that  the institute did not include the community partners or acknowledge the  possibility of a community partner as a principal investigator or co-PI.

This summer's institute  has been designed for community-academic partner teams (see below for  details).

CCPH has  successfully implemented community-academic partner team-based model of CBPR  training:

http://depts.washington.edu/ccph/pdf_files/2005CBPRInstituteApp3-25.pdf

and http://depts.washington.edu/ccph/pdf_files/2005%20Summer%20Institute%20Agenda.pdf

The training  curriculum, "Developing and Sustaining CBPR Partnerships" is  available online at www.cbprcurriculum.info.

If you're  interested in bringing a CBPR training workshop or institute to your  location, contact CCPH senior consultant Rachel Vaughn at sliccph@mcw.edu  for more information.

AFRICAN AMERICAN STUDENTS  ARE NOT APPLYING FOR SCHOLARSHIPS

Even if you do not  have a college-aged child at home, please share this with someone who does,  pass this scholarship information on to anyone and everyone that comes to  mind. Though there are a number of companies and organizations that have  donated moneys for scholarship use to African Americans, a great deal of the  money is being returned because of a lack of interest.

No one is going to  knock on our doors and ask if we can use a scholarship.

Take the initiative  to get your children involved. There is no need for money to be returned to  donating companies because we fail to apply for it.

Please pass this  information on to family members, nieces, nephews, and friends with children  etc. We must get the word out that money is available. If you are a college  student or getting ready to become one, you probably already know how useful  additional money can be.

Our youth really could use these scholarships. Thanks!!

COMING UP

The Coalition, Inc.  WEEKEND of PEACE

now in its 6th year  - has evolved from a local basket ball tournament hosted at several West and  Southwest Philadelphia Recreation Centers to a weekend and more of special  events, concerts, sports tournaments, youth panels, entertainment, music,  spoken word, and other featured activities undertaken by an expanding number  of community and organizational partners for all ages.

The goal of the WEEKEND  of PEACE

is to highlight  collaboration and provide access to the positive, productive activities  available throughout the city, throughout the year, for our city's young  people and their families.  This is  rapidly expanding into a SUMMER of PEACE, as more communities and  organizations sign on each year.

The 2009 WEEKEND  of PEACE

will be launched with  a Music and Spoken Word Benefit Concert ($5 minimum peace offering) at the  Church of the Advocate on Saturday (July 18) from 2 - 8pm.  On Thursday (July 23) there will be a  series of police/youth basketball tournaments at the Eastwick Rec. Center  from 6 - 9pm.  On July 29 (Wednesday),  an "Oldies for Peace" night will be held at Malcolm X Park.  On Friday (July 30), at Kingsessing Rec,  Center, a youth empowerment panel discussion on violence will be conducted,  followed at 7pm by a showing of a video TBN.

Plenty of free,  community-based youth-oriented activities for entire family - and we haven't  even gotten to the weekend yet!

For the actual WEEKEND  of PEACE - we will have a "Concert on the Green" on Friday  (July 31), 7pm, at the Kingsessing Rec Center, featuring Stickman Tony, the  Spoken Word, and other entertainers.

The next day  (Saturday, August 1) at Kingsessing, there will be a Health Fair (10am - 1pm)  followed by a five-game AAU tournament in honor of former St Joe's basketball  player Ivan Brown at 12 noon.

The weekend will  wrap up at Kingsessing on Sunday (August 2nd) with a Gospel Festival  featuring local Gospel groups, starting at 5pm.
