I have three precious things which I hold fast and prize. The first is  gentleness; the second is frugality; the third is humility, which keeps me  from putting myself before others. Be gentle and you can be bold; be frugal  and you can be liberal; avoid putting yourself before others and you can  become a leader among men. - Lao-Tzu

A nice, calm and respectable lady went into the pharmacy, walked up  to the Pharmacist, looked straight into his eyes, and said, "I would  like to buy some Cyanide."  The  pharmacist asked, "Why in the world do you need cyanide?"  The lady replied, "I need it to  poison my husband."

The pharmacist's eyes got big and he exclaimed, "Lady! I can't  give you cyanide to kill your husband. That's against the law!  I'll lose my license! They'll throw both  of us in jail!  All kinds of bad things  will happen. Absolutely not! You CANNOT have any cyanide!"

The lady reached into her purse and pulled out a picture of her  husband with the pharmacist's wife.

The pharmacist looked at the picture and replied, "Well now,  that's different. You didn't tell me you had a prescription."

Two guys burgle a store; they  burst out the door running as they hear the sirens of police cars coming  closer. The two dive into two separate bushes hoping they won't get caught.  Soon the squad cars stop near the bushes and the two robbers hearing  footsteps grow more nervous. A cop then grabs one of the guys out the bush  laughing "Busted". As he drags the robber off he looks back shaking  his head in shame... "Come on John!!!!!!!!" he screams, "They  got us!"

There was a boy who worked in the produce section of a super market.  A man came in and asked to buy half a head of lettuce. The boy told him that  they only sold whole heads of lettuce, but the man replied that he did not  need a whole head, only half. The boy explained that he would have to ask the  manager and so he walked into the back room and said, "There is some  jerk out there who wants to buy only a half a head of lettuce." As he  finished saying this, he turned around to find the man standing right behind  him, so he quickly added, "And this gentleman wants to buy the other  half." The manager okayed the request and the man went on his way. Later  on the manager said to the boy, "You almost got yourself in a lot of  trouble earlier, but I must say I was impressed with the way you got out of  it. You think on your feet and we like that around here. Where are you from, son?"  The boy replied, "Minnesota, sir." "Oh, really? Why did you  leave Minnesota?" inquired the manager. The boy replied, "There’s  nothing but loose women and hockey players up there." "My wife is  from Minnesota", exclaimed the manager. The boy instantly replied,  "Really! What team did she play for?"

How about the two old men, one a retired professor of  psychology and the other a retired professor of history. Their wives had  talked them into a two week stay at a hotel in the Catskills. They were  sitting around on the porch of the hotel watching the sun set. The history  professor said to the psychology professor, "Have you read Marx?"  To which the professor of psychology said, "Yes, I think it's the wicker  chairs."

The baby was coming way too fast so the paramedics were called. To  make it worse, when they arrived, there was a power outage. The paramedics  asked the four-year-old sister to hold the flashlight for them.

Despite the difficulties, all went well and the mother delivered a  baby boy. The paramedic smacked him on the behind and he began to cry.

Looking over at the wide-eyed little girl, the paramedic  asked her what she thought about what she had just witnessed. She said,  "That naughty boy should have never crawled in there. Spank him  again!"

FOR OUR CHILDREN

In Philly 25% of  children have poor vision.

Almost 80% of  children in Philly are screened in school or in a doctor's office, but only  37% who failed their vision screen actually see an eye specialist.

On the www.cap4kids.org/philadelphia  website, under the Physical Health  handout, working closely with PCCY, there are several resources to help  families find and pay for vision care.

http://www.cap4kids.org/philadelphia/parent_handouts/physical_health.html

Please become  familiar with PCCY's Vision Care Guide, The Eagle's Eye Mobile, and the New  Eyes for the Needy program. Help children lead more productive and satisfying  lives by getting them the eye care they deserve.

http://www.overcomingviolence.org/about-dov/international-day-of-prayer-for-peace.html

a day calling for  global ceasefires & nonviolence,

we will join our  cries for a ceasefire from the continual gun shots in

Philadelphia,

with the prayers  and actions of thousands of people around the world.

Monday, Sept 21,  2009

Prayer Vigil from

4:45-5:30 pm

as part of the  weekly

Monday witness

from 4-6pm

at Colosimo's Gun  Center,

933 Spring Garden  St.

In addition to the  war and violence raging in Iraq, Afghanistan, the Eastern Congo, Darfur, and  unfortunately other places too numerous to list, we face violence that takes  a deadly toll, too often unacknowledged because the victims are frequently  young, poor and/or people of color, throughout this nation.  This violence that plagues the most  vulnerable among us is due in large part to the easy and profitable  availability of illegal handguns, both in this city and the Commonwealth.

"If I cry  tonight, understand that my cries are those of our children dying in the  streets." Fr. Paul Washington

Please Join Us and  Be a Voice for the Children as we raise our voices in

anguish and anger  and prayer.

Our witness also  continues each Saturday morning from 11 am - 1 pm

as we call on Mr.  Colosimo to sign the

Responsible  Firearms Retailer Code of Conduct

Colosimo's is  between 9th and 10th Streets, 4 blocks east of the Spring

Garden stop on  SEPTA's Broad Street/Orange subway line.

City website offers emergency preparedness info for  nonprofits

September is  National Preparedness Month and a time when the Department of Homeland Security,  with the support of coalition partners, works to increase public awareness  about emergency preparedness.

During the month of  September, consider hosting or participating in activities related to  preparedness.

This year, National  Preparedness Month focuses on encouraging individuals, families and  communities to get an Emergency  Supply Kit; make a

Family  Emergency Plan; get informed about emergencies and their appropriate  responses; and participate in emergency volunteer efforts.

In Philadelphia,  the Office of Emergency Management has established a new webpage dedicated to  information for nonprofit organizations and how they should prepare for an  emergency.  The site offers a toolkit  on Business  Continuity Planning, a Planning  Checklist, and other useful information.

The OEM is also  hosting Family Preparedness Workshops in September on the following dates and  times to help individuals and families be better prepared for any kind of  emergency:

-- Thursday,  September 24th at 6pm at the 24th/25th Police Districts at 3901 Whitaker  Avenue.

The workshops will  feature presentations by the American Red Cross, the Office of Emergency  Management, and the Philadelphia Department of Public Health. There will be  door prizes, information on Philadelphia’s neighborhood evacuation plans and  signup sheets for emergency text alerts through ReadyNotifyPA.

Get Fresh!

Volunteer with  Philabundance Fresh for All

You recycle out the  wazoo and consider yourself consigliore of the

enviro-sack mafia.

Hence, a cause you  can believe in: Philabundance wants to fill those ubiquitous bags with  produce through its new Fresh for All program.

And you can help by  volunteering.

The nonprofit hands  out perishables at six sites in the Delaware Valley — where nutritious diet  staples are hard to come by,

especially in tough  times.

With a minimum  three-hour commitment, you’ll keep busy. Help with admin, approve clients, or  do community outreach (posting mailings, making phone calls).

Looking for  something physical?

Take food to sites,  divide apples, and dole out the goods. You’ll be doing a major part to help  people get the fruits and veggies they need.

And that’s a green  movement to be proud of.

GREEN  PIECE

?Weavers Way #5 plastics recycling resumes

Fellow Recyclers,

The next Weavers Way collection of #5  plastics, which are not included in the City’s recycling program, will resume  on

Saturday Sept. 19 from 10am to 1pm.

For those observing Rosh Hashanah on September  19th, you can bring your #5 plastics the following

Saturday, September 26, between 11AM and  noon.

The collection dates for the rest of the  year will be on the 3rd Saturday of each month: October 17, November 21, and  December 19. The program will skip January and resume in February.

The collections take place at the co-op's  garage, at 542 Carpenter Lane, which is across the street and a bit further  down the block from the Big Blue Marble bookstore.

Please note that we need volunteers to keep  this project going. (Weavers Way members can get work credit for helping us;  work shifts are available on co-op's the online calendar.) If you're willing  and able to help on September 19 and haven't yet signed up, please reply to  this email.

The #5 category includes yogurt cups, sour  cream containers, hummus tubs, some medicine bottles, and more. Your  recyclables must be clean and dry to be accepted. Check to make sure there  are no other materials (paper, screws, other number plastics) on the items  you bring in. Impurities of any kind compromise the recycling process and  usually lead to the discarding of an entire batch. Exclude any lids unless  they are clearly marked #5. (Most lids from #5 containers are #4 plastic, but  this is not always the case.)

We ask recyclers for a small donation to  cover postage costs of mailing the recyclables to the Gimme 5 processing  facility in New York.

Before bringing your #5s to the collection,  be sure that they meet the requirements for Gimme 5:

All items must be CLEAN and DRY. If they  contained food or any oily or dirty product, make sure they have been washed,  not just rinsed. Items stacked when wet tend to stay wet, so allow washed  items to dry fully before stacking or packing.

The #5 stamp needs to be visible on each  item. Lids are separate items. Don’t assume lids are the same number plastic  as the container; sometimes they are but usually they are not. Check to make  sure there are no other materials (labels, paper, other number plastics,  metal) on the items you bring in.

Brita filters are also welcome! Let them  air dry for several days to make sure they are completely dry.

We'll see you soon!

NIH Summer Institute on  Community-Based Participatory Research

The National Institutes of  Health has announced the 2nd summer institute. We are thrilled to see that  the organizers have responded to Community-Campus Partnerships for Health’s  (CCPH) comments on last year's summer institute.

When the 1st NIH institute  on CBPR was announced, CCPH expressed concern about its exclusive focus on  academic researchers.

In CBPR, the community is  involved at the very start of the research,

so it was incongruent that  the institute did not include the community partners or acknowledge the  possibility of a community partner as a principal investigator or co-PI.

This summer's institute  has been designed for community-academic partner teams (see below for  details).

CCPH has  successfully implemented community-academic partner team-based model of CBPR  training:

http://depts.washington.edu/ccph/pdf_files/2005CBPRInstituteApp3-25.pdf

and http://depts.washington.edu/ccph/pdf_files/2005%20Summer%20Institute%20Agenda.pdf

The training  curriculum, "Developing and Sustaining CBPR Partnerships" is  available online at www.cbprcurriculum.info.

If you're  interested in bringing a CBPR training workshop or institute to your  location, contact CCPH senior consultant Rachel Vaughn at sliccph@mcw.edu  for more information.

AFRICAN AMERICAN STUDENTS  ARE NOT APPLYING FOR SCHOLARSHIPS

Even if you do not  have a college-aged child at home, please share this with someone who does,  pass this scholarship information on to anyone and everyone that comes to  mind. Though there are a number of companies and organizations that have  donated moneys for scholarship use to African Americans, a great deal of the  money is being returned because of a lack of interest.

No one is going to  knock on our doors and ask if we can use a scholarship.

Take the initiative  to get your children involved. There is no need for money to be returned to  donating companies

because we fail to  apply for it.

Please pass this  information on to family members, nieces, nephews, and friends with children  etc. We must get the word out that money is available. If you are a college  student or getting ready to become one, you probably already know how useful  additional money can be.

Our youth really could use these scholarships. Thanks!!
