Two small boys, not yet old enough to be in school, were overheard  talking at the zoo one day. "My name is Billy. What's yours?" asked  the first boy. "Tommy," replied the second. "My Daddy's an  accountant. What does your Daddy do for a living?" asked Billy. Tommy  replied, "My Daddy's a lawyer." "Honest?" asked Billy.  "No, just the regular kind", replied Tommy.

While waiting for my first  appointment in the reception room of a new dentist, I noticed his  certificate, which bore his full name. Suddenly, I remembered that a tall,  handsome boy with the same name had been in my high school class some 45  years ago.

Upon seeing him, however, I quickly discarded any such thought. This balding,  gray-haired man with the deeply lined face was too old to have been my  classmate.

After he had examined my teeth, I asked him if he had attended the local high  school.

 "Yes," he replied.

"When did you graduate?" I asked.

 "In 1952."

"Why, you were in my class!" I exclaimed.

He looked at me closely, and then asked, "What did you teach?"

When I went to get my driver's license renewed, our local Motor  Vehicle Bureau was packed.

The line inched along for almost an hour until the man ahead of me finally  got his license.

He inspected his photo for a moment and commented to the clerk, "I was  standing in line so long, I ended up looking pretty grouchy in this  picture."

The clerk looked at his picture closely, and reassured him, "It's okay.  That's how you're going to look when the cops pull you over anyway."

Temple University's  student organization Students Striving for Success

will be kicking off  their college preparation workshop series. High

below and visit the  website for more information about this student ran

STUDENTS STRIVING  FOR SUCCESS

Temple University |  1755 N. 13th Street, Ste. 219M | Box# 194 |

Philadelphia, PA  19122 | www.strive4success.org

Our Mission…Our  Purpose

Students Striving  for Success is an organization of students from many

different  backgrounds who harvest one common goal: to increase the

interest and number  of high school students who attend post-secondary

education and to  develop them with proper professional etiquette. We

developed a system  that includes: series of workshops that are geared

towards college  preparation and professional development, one-on-one

mentoring from  current college students, and common-interest group

programs, to  efficiently and effectively enhance their chances in

getting into  post-secondary educational facilities and to develop them

into mature  professionals who are ready to face the world.

Our mission is to  equip the local students coming out of high school

with the basic  skills necessary to succeed in college and professional

aspirations. The  philosophy of Triple S is; "The foundation is laid, now

pave your  future." We want to inspire the high school participants with

the idea that  anything is possible through hard work, determination and

motivation. Triple  S is equipping them with the knowledge and

information they  need; now it's up to them to use it and change their

future. The high  school students of Philadelphia have lost the ambition

of exceeding past  expectations, and we want to help bring that ambition

back.

Program Outline

Students Striving  for Success is an organization that believes through a

series of  workshops, mentoring and common-interest bonding; we can help local high  school students prepare for college and develop

professionally.

The workshops will  be held on Temple University's campus for two hours at length. They will be  divided into two parts: college preparation

series during the  fall/winter months and the professional development

series during the  spring months.

The high school  students will be given contact information and allotted

time to meet and  speak with Temple University students and graduates in their particular field  of interest. The student during these times can

follow-up with any  questions they may have had about workshops and/ or receive help on other  school assignments they may have for their

classes.

Our common-interest  groups will be held on Saturdays at a future

specified time. We  are currently working on a S2S (Sister to Sister)

group; in which we  are partnering with NCNW, and a B2B (Brother to

Brother) group. If  the students feel the need for more common-interest

groups we will try  to incorporate them into our program.

The comparisons are compelling!  The film also reveals how slavery impacted African American  manhood and shaped perceptions about the Black Man's sexual prowess.  This unique, thought-provoking documentary  film addresses a myriad of issues that were born in slavery, yet continue to  plague African Americans today. This informative 55 minute DVD sheds light on  a dark and tragic period in American history (includes 10 min. music video).  Come see this thought-provoking film and join in the stimulating discussion  that follows.

WHO (World Health Organization) Admits to Releasing  Pandemic Virus into Population via 'Mock-Up' Vaccines

04/09/2009 00:08:00admin

Posted  by: Dr.  Mercola
 September 03 2009 6,125

The document on the WHO  website linked below states that it is common procedure to release pandemic  viruses into the population in order to get a jump ahead of the real  pandemic, so as to fast track the vaccine for when it is needed.

In Europe, some manufacturers  have conducted advance studies using a so-called "mock-up" vaccine.  Mock-up vaccines contain an active ingredient for an influenza virus that has  not circulated recently in human populations and thus mimics the novelty of a  pandemic virus.

According to the website,  “Such advance studies can greatly expedite regulatory approval.”

Sources: World  Health Organization

Dr.  Mercola's Comments:

On June 11 the World Health Organization (WHO) raised its  swine flu pandemic alert from a 5 to a 6. Phase 6 is the highest level alert,  and reflects the speed with which a virus is spreading -- not its severity.

This classification also  allows for a vaccine to qualify for a “fast-track” procedure for licensing  and approval, and this process is now ongoing for the swine flu vaccine.

What you may not know,  however, is that WHO, together with health officials, regulatory authorities  and vaccine manufacturers, have been working since 2007 – long before this  new “threat” of swine flu emerged – to “explore a broad range of issues  surrounding the regulatory approval of pandemic vaccines.”

According to the WHO website:

“Ways were sought to  shorten the time between the emergence of a pandemic virus and the availability  of safe and effective vaccines.”

One such method used in Europe  is to conduct advance studies using a “mock-up” vaccine  that contains an active ingredient for an influenza virus that has not  circulated recently in human populations.

When testing these mock-up  vaccines, it is very possible to release the novel influenza virus into the  population, as its purpose is to “mimic the novelty of a pandemic virus” and  “greatly expedite regulatory approval.”

Government officials have  other tricks up their sleeves to ensure these new, barely tested vaccines  easily make it to market as well, such as:

Labeling the vaccine a “strain  change” rather than an entirely “new” vaccine. This method states the new  vaccine has built on technology used to produce vaccines for seasonal  influenza, and the change for the pandemic vaccine is similar to a strain  change used to produce a new seasonal vaccine each flu season.

In the United States, vaccine  manufacturers are required to submit fewer data if they already have a licensed  flu vaccine and will use the same manufacturing process for the pandemic  vaccine.

Using a “rolling review  procedure.” This allows manufacturers to submit sets of data for regulatory  review “as they become available.” In other words, they’re free to distribute  the vaccine and then submit the safety data later on.

Would You Want a  Fast-Tracked Vaccine Injected Into Your Body?

By very definition,  fast-tracked vaccines are those that have received very little safety testing  prior to being used. So any time you agree to get one, you are essentially a  guinea pig.

Vaccine manufacturer  GlaxoSmithKline has actually stated:

"Clinical trials will be limited, due  to the need to provide the vaccine to governments as quickly as possible.  Additional studies will therefore be required and conducted after the vaccine  is made available."

And WHO likewise says:

“Time constraints mean  that clinical data at the time when pandemic vaccines are first administered  will inevitably be limited. Further testing of safety and effectiveness will  need to take place after administration of the vaccine has begun.”

Why would anyone who knows the  facts sign up for a vaccine that really needs further safety studies … but  won’t receive them until AFTER it’s already been given out? By then it will  be too late.

So please realize that if you  or your child receive a swine flu vaccine, you will be acting as a TEST  subject.

Remember this vaccine will not  be made using the methods of the past. In order to speed up the cultivation  of the virus and the manufacturing process, they’re using human liver cells  instead of chicken eggs. Whether this new procedure is better or worse than  the old method, I can’t say … but it’s never been used before and they have  not had time to conduct any human testing.

So, it’s a giant game of  Russian Roulette that you simply want to avoid.

Nearly all of the vaccines  created will also include thimerosal (mercury), and the toxic  adjuvant squalene, both of which have been clearly shown to carry  significant health risks.

You should know, too, that  vaccine makers and federal officials have been rendered immune from lawsuits.  Should anything go wrong with this current vaccine they will not  have to pay a single cent to anyonehttp://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2009/09/sites/articles/archive/2009/08/20/Legal-Immunity-Set-for-Swine-Flu-Vaccine-Makers.aspx

Who Stands to Benefit From the Swine Flu Pandemic (and Future  Pandemics)?

This is the question you need  to ask yourself when you hear the media dishing out the latest statistics  about the swine flu pandemic.

In the last few days alone,  I’ve seen major news outlets warning that come flu season, the swine flu  could kill 90,000 Americans and hospitalize 2 million. This sounds a lot like  the fear-mongering that went on during the Bird  Flu pandemic (that never materialized) back in 2005http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2009/09/sites/articles/archive/2008/2/14/i-was-right-about-the-bird-flu-hoax.aspx

Back then scientists and  governments were congratulating themselves for averting a threat that never  was by stockpiling worthless vaccines. Now I’m having déjà vu.

In response to this newest  swine flu pandemic, what did the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention  recently suggest?

Swine flu shots for all! Of  course, what else would you expect?

As the Washington  Post reported, CDC said: “As soon as a vaccine is available,  try to get it for everyone in your family.”

Well, you might be tempted to  do just that if you believe the sensational number of swine flu deaths  they’re predicting. But, really, these numbers are not based on facts.

WHO continues to define the  severity of the H1N1 virus to be moderate, generally defined as an illness  requiring neither hospitalization nor even medical care. Most cases are having  MILD symptoms that clear up on their own.

Further, no one really knows  for sure just how many cases of swine flu there are, because some countries are  no longer confirming them by lab.

In the UK, for example, they  now appear to be collecting swine flu data online and via the phone, based on  nothing but self-assessment.

So did they really contract  the swine flu?

Or did the vast majority of  them simply have a case of the sniffles or a seasonal flu bug? Without  laboratory confirmation, no one will ever know, but they sure are using those  numbers to scare you!

Going back to my original  question though, you must ask yourself who stands to benefit from all of this  paranoia and hysteria.

Of course you know the answer  to this one.

Big  Pharma … which stands to gain  up to $49 billion a year on the swine flu vaccine alone plus an  infinite amount on top of that for future pandemic vaccines.

The vaccine manufacturers  would love for every man, woman, and child to heed the CDC’s advice to get  vaccinated. But now you know better.

The swine flu is typically a  mild illness.

The swine flu vaccine has not  been tested for safety or efficacy, but we DO know it will contain harmful  additives.

The choice, to me, is obvious.  And in the future, anytime a new “pandemic” appears and officials urge you to  rush out and get a shot, please remember this article and ask yourself if  it’s really you who stands to benefit from their advice.

Interestingly the swine flu vaccines are going to be  available in the US around the time the finest vaccine conference in the  world will be held. If you want to learn the absolute latest and best  strategies for swine flu then Washington DC is the place to be October 2-4. I  will be sharing my strategies live at the event.

So join me at the National  Vaccine Information Center (NVIC) Web site, and join us in taking action  against the potential threat of mandatory swine flu vaccinations.

GREEN  PIECE

?Weavers Way #5 plastics recycling resumes

Fellow Recyclers,

Weavers Way collection of #5 plastics,  which are not included in the City’s recycling program, will be on the 3rd  Saturday of each month: October 17, November 21, and December 19. The program  will skip January and resume in February.

The collections take place at the co-op's  garage,

at 542 Carpenter Lane,

which is across the street and a bit  further down the block from the Big Blue Marble bookstore.

Please note that we need volunteers to keep  this project going. (Weavers Way members can get work credit for helping us;  work shifts are available on co-op's the online calendar.)

The #5 category includes yogurt cups, sour  cream containers, hummus tubs, some medicine bottles, and more. Your  recyclables must be clean and dry to be accepted. Check to make sure there  are no other materials (paper, screws, other number plastics) on the items  you bring in. Impurities of any kind compromise the recycling process and  usually lead to the discarding of an entire batch. Exclude any lids unless  they are clearly marked #5. (Most lids from #5 containers are #4 plastic, but  this is not always the case.)

We ask recyclers for a small donation to  cover postage costs of mailing the recyclables to the Gimme 5 processing  facility in New York.

Before bringing your #5s to the collection,  be sure that they meet the requirements for Gimme 5:

All items must be CLEAN and DRY. If they  contained food or any oily or dirty product, make sure they have been washed,  not just rinsed. Items stacked when wet tend to stay wet, so allow washed  items to dry fully before stacking or packing.

The #5 stamp needs to be visible on each  item. Lids are separate items. Don’t assume lids are the same number plastic  as the container; sometimes they are but usually they are not. Check to make  sure there are no other materials (labels, paper, other number plastics,  metal) on the items you bring in.

Brita filters are also welcome! Let them  air dry for several days to make sure they are completely dry.

We'll see you soon!

NIH Summer Institute on  Community-Based Participatory Research

The National Institutes of  Health has announced the 2nd summer institute. We are thrilled to see that  the organizers have responded to Community-Campus Partnerships for Health’s  (CCPH) comments on last year's summer institute.

When the 1st NIH institute  on CBPR was announced, CCPH expressed concern about its exclusive focus on  academic researchers.

In CBPR, the community is  involved at the very start of the research,

so it was incongruent that  the institute did not include the community partners or acknowledge the  possibility of a community partner as a principal investigator or co-PI.

This summer's institute  has been designed for community-academic partner teams (see below for  details).

CCPH has  successfully implemented community-academic partner team-based model of CBPR  training:

and http://depts.washington.edu/ccph/pdf_files/2005%20Summer%20Institute%20Agenda.pdf

The training  curriculum, "Developing and Sustaining CBPR Partnerships" is available  online at www.cbprcurriculum.info.

If you're  interested in bringing a CBPR training workshop or institute to your  location, contact CCPH senior consultant Rachel Vaughn at sliccph@mcw.edu  for more information.

AFRICAN AMERICAN STUDENTS  ARE NOT APPLYING FOR SCHOLARSHIPS

Even if you do not  have a college-aged child at home, please share this with someone who does,  pass this scholarship information on to anyone and everyone that comes to  mind. Though there are a number of companies and organizations that have  donated moneys for scholarship use to African Americans, a great deal of the  money is being returned because of a lack of interest.

No one is going to  knock on our doors and ask if we can use a scholarship.

Take the initiative  to get your children involved. There is no need for money to be returned to  donating companies

because we fail to  apply for it.

Please pass this  information on to family members, nieces, nephews, and friends with children  etc. We must get the word out that money is available. If you are a college  student or getting ready to become one, you probably already know how useful  additional money can be.

The owner, ‘Mr.  Joe’, as he is known by his diminutive clientele, is not some rich  philanthropist, nor is he a modern day Santa Claus.  And his kid-friendly store is really not on the corner. What he  is, though, is a caring businessman who asks his taller clients to drop a few  dollars in a special candy jar to supplement his ‘For the Kids’ project.

UP IN THE ATTIC

Kamal Imani, 2009,  72 Minutes

Up in the Attic is a coming of age story about a group  of popular teenagers in the New Jersey suburbs in the 1980’s hip hop era.  They were influenced by various potent societal elements which included Hip  Hop, Africentricity, The 5% Nation of Gods and Earths and the societal  elements of drugs, sex and peer pressure which is common to many American  teens.  The film is laced with comedy,  strong language and content, youthful energy and colorful characters. It will  serve as an excellent tool for inter-generational dialogue.
