Extreme Weather:
Nature's Wake-up Call

Faster than expected Arctic ice melt has been linked to increased worldwide weather extremes.

An extensive study by scientists from around the world has found that “the human impact on climate is being superimposed on the natural variation in climate and temperature.”

“Snowmageddon?”

Climate changes are now underway and projected to grow.

Polar ice melting is adding moisture to the atmosphere.

For more than fifty years precipitation has increased across the United States and is projected to increase further.

If the precipitation occurs when the temperature is freezing (like during the winter) it is most likely to be in the form of snow, sleet and freezing rain.

(Of course this is subject to melting when the temperature rises with accompanying consequences.)

On February 13, 2010 nj.com/news reported that there was snow on the ground in 49 states on February 12, 2010 thanks to an unusual combination of weather patterns that dusted the U.S. with Hawaii being the only exception.

This is after a month that saw the most snow cover for any December in North America in the 43 years that records have been kept, and January 2010, which ranked No. 8 among all months for North American snow cover.
