Each player should become expert in the "Man-to-man" defense which is the foundation of every zone. To be effective on defense, a team must be consistently alert, communicating and aware of changes in the offense which signal the need to change the defense to the most appropriate format.
Effective against all offenses but vulnerable to lack of determination and/or inattentiveness.
Works against inside drives and high post. Weak on low post, back door, outside jumper and inflexibility.
Works well against most offenses, but be alert for quick passes to open player.
Useful against low post, base line, back door and corner shots, but weak against top-of-key and outside jump shots.
3-2 ZONE
Effective against top-of-key, high post and outside jumper, but vulnerable to low post, base line and back door plays.
Works against most offenses if set up quickly, but has same weaknesses as 2-1-2 and 3-2 zones if players are lax.
Same as 3-2 zone, but especially effective against outside jumpers.
Useful against excessive ball handling, weak against quick passes to open person.
(*) Stays with ball handler, or key offensive player.
BOX-AND-ONE
Use against inbounding plays immediately following scoring, but be alert for quick downcourt passes and fall back to standard defenses when necessary.
Remember that a strong defense is the key to a strong offense and victory. Whenever your team scores, immediately play defense!
