Greetings Coalition Family! Here in the northern states winter is tightening its grip. Here are a few things you should do if you haven't already. Have your heater cleaned and serviced. Oil-fired systems should be cleaned every year for older models; gas-fired heaters should be cleaned every 2-3 years depending on condition. Chimneys should be visually inspected at the start of every season. Draw a couple of gallons of water from the bottom outlet of your hot water tank to remove collected sediment. Caution: It is not safe to use your gas oven for temporary heat in unventilated areas. Most municipalities have mandated CO (carbon monoxide) detectors; don't wait until it becomes law. Install yours today! Even if your equipment is in optimum condition, if you live in a row or semi-detached home, your neighbor's problem can become yours! We are looking forward to meeting with more of you this year, please email or call to have a member of The Coalition at your meeting or event. “The multitude which is not brought to act as a unit, is confusion. Laughter is a stress buster · It reduces the levels of stress hormones epinephrine and cortisol. 2. Laughter strengthens the immune system The immune system is important in maintaining good health by keeping infections, allergies and cancers at bay: · Recent research into the effects of laughter by Dr. Lee S. Berk, Professor at Loma Linda University, California,
USA, demonstrates that laughter will increase the count of natural killer cells (NK cells - a type of white cell) and
antibody levels. · Laughter therapy helps to increase antibodies (Immunoglobulin A) in the mucous of the nose and respiratory
passages. 3. Laughter is anti-ageing · It tones facial muscles and expressions. · Laughter causes an increase in blood supply to the face, which is why some people look flushed. This nourishes
the skin and makes it glow. · People look younger and more fun when they laugh! 4. Laughter is aerobic exercise Laughter stimulates heart and blood circulation and is equivalent to any other standard aerobic exercise. · Dr. William Fry, Standford University, USA claims one minute of laughter is equal to 10 minutes on the rowing
machine. · The singular benefit almost everybody derives is a sense of well-being because more oxygen is taken in during
laughter. · It is an exercise regime suitable for all, including people confined to a bed or a wheelchair. 5. Laughter is internal jogging Laughter massages internal organs by enhancing the blood supply and increasing their efficiency. This is especially good
for proper bowel movement. · Laughter exercises the abdominal muscles and helps to improve muscle tone. 6. Laughter is a Natural Pain Killer Laughter increases the levels of endorphins – the body's natural pain killers. Norman Cousins, an American journalist
who was suffering from an incurable disease of the spine, benefited from laughter therapy in a situation when all painkillers
were ineffective. · Endorphins released as a result of laughter may help in reducing the intensity of pain in those suffering from
arthritis, spondylitis and muscular spasms of the body. 7. Laughter can control high blood pressure Laughter helps to control blood pressure by reducing the release of stress-related hormones. · Experiments have demonstrated that a 10-minute laughter session leads to a reduction of 10-20 mm in blood
pressure. This however does not mean that patients taking 2-3 tablets for blood pressure every day will be completely
cured. 8. Laughter can help dump depression and anxiety The stress and strain of modern life takes a heavy toll on the human mind and body. · Better sleep Reduced depression. Some people claim they can manage without prescribed anti-depressant pills
and tranquillizers. 9. Laughter Alleviates Bronchitis and Asthma Laughter improves lung capacity and oxygen levels in the blood. · Laughter Club members report a marked reduction in the frequency of asthma attacks. 10. Laughter just makes you feel good Laugh and the world laughs with you. How you react to life is up to you. Live life laughing! program, will be on the 3rd Saturday of each month: December 19. The program will
skip January and resume in February. The collections take place at the co-op's garage, at 542 Carpenter Lane, which is across the street and a bit further down the block from the Big Blue Marble
bookstore. Please note that we need volunteers to keep this project going. (Weavers Way
members can get work credit for helping us; work shifts are available on co-op's the
online calendar.) The #5 category includes yogurt cups, sour cream containers, hummus tubs, some
medicine bottles, and more. Your recyclables must be clean and dry to be accepted.
Check to make sure there are no other materials (paper, screws, other number
plastics) on the items you bring in. Impurities of any kind compromise the recycling
process and usually lead to the discarding of an entire batch. Exclude any lids
unless they are clearly marked #5. (Most lids from #5 containers are #4 plastic, but
this is not always the case.) We ask recyclers for a small donation to cover postage costs of mailing the
recyclables to the Gimme 5 processing facility in New York. Before bringing your #5s to the collection, be sure that they meet the requirements
for Gimme 5: All items must be CLEAN and DRY. If they contained food or any oily or dirty
product, make sure they have been washed, not just rinsed. Items stacked when wet
tend to stay wet, so allow washed items to dry fully before stacking or packing. The #5 stamp needs to be visible on each item. Lids are separate items. Don't
assume lids are the same number plastic as the container; sometimes they are but
usually they are not. Check to make sure there are no other materials (labels, paper,
other number plastics, metal) on the items you bring in. Brita filters are also welcome! Let them air dry for several days to make sure they are
completely dry. We'll see you soon! Carolyn, Helen, Priscilla and Stevik of the Weavers Way Environment Committee ----- Coalition members! ARTS FOR AWARENESS The Evolution of Graffiti Just what do you make of images or lettering painted in any manner on property? That is the official description of an
age-old phenomenon now known as graffiti. The term “Graffiti” has either a negative or positive charge depending on what side of the spray can your finger is
pointing. Technically, it's been around since pre-historic times as a marker of man's existence found inside cave walls,
for who could say if the property they wrote on was real estate purchased or stolen for a moment of expression? Only humans have been guilty of scribbling on the walls, and (depending on the century and area around the world)
regarded as either criminal or artist. In the 16th century, wall art was considered a must have as artists such as
Michelangelo and daVinci were rivals in the country of Italy. Frescos and murals were in high demand. Now, in the 21st
century it is regarded as vandalism when property is painted on without the property owner's consent. But let's try to
look beyond the criminal aspect of graffiti to the expression as an art form. This form of art began in the late 1960's when youngsters used permanent markers to tag, or write their names on
subway cars. Usually the name was followed by the street number on which they lived. The most popular name then
came from a young Greek American boy named Demetrius who posted “Taki 183” just about everywhere in NY.
This form of graffiti was known as “Tagging” and the intent was to gain fame by appearing on subways and walls
throughout the city. Many New Yorkers would claim that modern graffiti art originated in New York City, but tagging
was not originally a NY phenomenon. It began in Philadelphia, PA. where names such as “Monikers”,
“Cornbread” and “Top Cat” gained their claim to fame. Later, to be seen by a larger audience, markers were discarded and replaced by spray paint and as a result buildings,
cars, and anything that remained stationery were targeted. By the late 1970's subway art had moved to subway
exteriors then freight trains where the need to be recognized as king or queen of graffiti meant creating an opportunity
for an artist's name to travel...even across the country to places they've never been. This artistic freedom allowed a
vicarious expression that addressed the urban youth's need to move beyond the boundaries of a financial condition,
one that was so great it risked being jailed for the offense. By then taggers were being separated from a new form of artists that were now calling themselves “graffitists”. As a
result of this art traveling across the country and eventually the world in planes and ships, graffiti became a hit in the
Eastern hemisphere. In addition, the hip-hop generation embraced the freedom and artistic expression of graffiti,
identifying themselves with the message of largess and bold creativity in the face of danger. The spray-can became a weapon as well as a plea to form an up and coming new culture that was enraged by the
standards and conventions of the generation that preceded it. So it is not surprising that this phenomenon is no longer
limited to the urban poor. Now, half of the graffiti art comes from Caucasian middle-class families and the European
population. The financial range now is as varied as ultra poor to uber-rich, as is the age range. A graffitist can be as
young as 12 and as old as 75! In addition, both genders are welcomed as the only thing that promotes you is your
artistic ability. What I find fascinating about graffiti is its ability to combine and necessitate the art of writing with the visual art form.
Unlike traditional art, particularly contemporary or abstract, graffiti forces you to read it. It always has a literal
message, and carries with it a universal message as well. One particular message is the artists' deliberate resistance to become “established” and recognized by some gallery
snob or curator, though much planning and sketching is incorporated in modern graffiti, particularly with mural sized
artwork. All graffitists agree to the fact that though their work may be unsolicited, it does not disqualify it as art. They
also accept the risk that though their art may take dozens of cans and hours of work, it can be gone within a matter of
minutes because of its vandalism categorization, for graffiti falls under the unwritten law of “temporary art” even though
considered by many as modern-day masterpieces. In many ways it puts them in the same category as sand and ice
sculptors who make art for art's sake. Government insists that graffitists have no right to complain about their work being removed because the work was forced upon the public. A graffitist's counter argument is that billboards, ads and campaign signs are also forced on the public in a similar manner, so much so that we are subliminally motivated (AKA brain-washed) to purchase the product.
