If a city has a 30% Negro population, then it is logical to assume that  Negroes should have at least 30% of the jobs in any particular company, and  jobs in all categories rather than only in menial areas.

We were taking the young black men who had been crippled by our society  and sending them eight thousand miles away to guarantee liberties which they  had not found in Southwest Georgia and East Harlem. ... We have been  repeatedly faced with the cruel irony of watching Negro and white boys on TV  screens as they kill and die together for a nation that has been unable to  seat them in the same schools.

Because I have a job to do. If I were constantly worried  about death, I couldn’t function. After a while, if your life is more or less  constantly in peril, you come to a point where you accept the possibility  philosophically. I must face the fact, as all others in positions of  leadership must do, that America today is an extremely sick nation, and that  something could well happen to me at any time. I feel, though, that my cause  is so right, so moral, that if I should lose my life, in some way it would  aid the cause.

Like an  unchecked cancer, hate corrodes the personality and eats away its vital  unity. Hate destroys a man's sense of values and his objectivity. It causes  him to describe the beautiful as ugly and the ugly as beautiful, and to  confuse the true with the false and the false with the true.

Hereeeeeeeeeeeeees...  Kathy’s Korner!

Returning from a trip  to visit my grandmother in California, I was

stopped by a state  trooper in Kansas for exceeding the speed limit.

Grateful to have  received a warning instead of a ticket, I gave him a

small bag of my  grandmother's delicious chocolate-chip cookies and

proceeded on my way.

Later, I was stopped  by another trooper. "What have I done?" I asked.

"Nothing,"  the trooper said, smiling. "I heard you were passing out

great chocolate-chip  cookies."

HEALTH MATTERS

Bacteria  trigger production of key immune cells

SINGAPORE (Reuters) - Allergies and  autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis could one day be prevented  by consuming a type of bacteria, like probiotics taken in yoghurt, according  to a study published on Friday.

The  researchers fed mice with a family of bacteria and found that it triggered  the production of certain white blood cells, called regulatory T cells.

"By  increasing regulatory T cells, they will help suppress many of our allergies  and autoimmune diseases," said one of the scientists, Kenya Honda, an  immunology associate professor at the University of Tokyo.

Regulatory  T cells are white blood cells that regulate the immune system and prevent it  from excessive reactions.

When  an immune system goes into an overdrive, it can cause allergies. It can also  destroy healthy cells and tissues and cause autoimmune diseases like  rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis or scaly skin, and Crohn's disease.

Honda  and colleagues, who published their findings in the journal Science, used  antibiotics to flush all bacteria from the guts of a group of mice.

They  later fed the rodents 46 species of harmless Clostridium bacteria and found  that regulatory T cells quickly returned to their colons.

"The  46 strains were isolated from healthy, conventionally reared mice,"  Honda said by telephone. "And the strains were sufficient for the  induction of regulatory T cells in their colons."

The  researchers next fed the bacteria to normal mice and found that it produced  elevated levels of regulatory T cells in their colons. These normal mice were  also able to ward off some allergies and colitis, an autoimmune disease,  Honda said.

"We  fed the clostridium species to normal, conventionally reared mice ... they  had more regulatory T cells in their colons and they were resistant to  colitis and other allergies," he said.

Looking  ahead, Honda said experts can study the possibility of including live  Clostridium bacteria in fermented foods.

"We  may be able to use live Clostridium species in probiotics, like in yoghurt.  If you drink Clostridium species, you may be able to

increase  regulatory T cells in your intestines and your

allergic  responses will be taken care of," he said.

Probiotics  are live micro-organisms that are believed to be

good  for their hosts.

There  are many other strains of Clostridium and some are harmful, including one  that causes tetanus and the Clostridium difficile, a drug-resistant superbug.  But these were not in the cocktail of bacteria given to the mice.

SpotLight On Our Efforts

Group  invokes KKK in hopes of saving young Black lives

Written  by Nathaniel Lee Tribune Correspondent

In an  effort to raise awareness about the Black on Black crime, a West Philadelphia  group dedicated to community unification has embarked on a public awareness  campaign by producing shirts that compare today’s terror produced by young  Black men to the existence of the Ku Klux Klan.

According  to official sources, the leading causes of death for Black men in America are  other Black men. Some have speculated that more Blacks are killed by other  Black men today than were ever killed by members of the Ku Klux Klan during  the pinnacle of the Jim Crow era.

This is  the message of the Moorish Unification Council of the World Incorporated,  founded and chaired by Wesley Wilson-Bey. Wilson-Bey produced the t-shirts  bearing the message “No more Klan in the Hood,” which equates the terror now  caused by young Black men with guns to the terror once conducted by white  terrorist group.

“The  reason we dubbed it [the shirt] ‘the Klan in the hood’ is because our young  people have taken the place of the Klan and we have to have visual things for  our young people to see that the things that they are doing are incorrect,”  Wilson-Bey said.

Understanding  their history is key, according to Wilson-Bey, for raising the awareness and  hence possibly changing the behavior of those engaged in criminal activities  in the streets of Philadelphia.

“If they  understand their history they will understand that the Klan was a terror in  the community. Our young people have taken over that same mentality where  they are terrorizing our community. Our old can’t sit on the steps, they are  knocking on doors and killing people on the front porches in front of their  parents — this is asinine and crazy,” Wilson-Bey said.

The  shirts, said Wilson-Bey, are produced by the Moorish Unification Council to  provide the youth an opportunity to take a look at themselves.

“We have  already run the course of what the Klan has done and thought that we were  finished with that mentality,” Wilson-Bey said. “Now we see it again arising  in our young people and so we have to step up to the plate and say ‘enough is  enough.’”

Simply  putting out a message isn’t the mission for the Moorish Council; after  awareness has been raised, the hope is that action will be taken by the  people most affected.

“This  shirt will hopefully make both our young people and others get involved and  help engage our communities in order to stop our young from saturating the  prison systems,” Wilson-Bey said.

While  previous generations have had to fight for civil rights and against such  issues as segregation, many of today’s youth have had no significant  movement, which served them to take to the streets, according to the  presentation.

“I think  it [the shirt] will get them to do some research, get them to ask the  question: ‘who is the Klan? What are they doing for them to align me with  this racist group?’ Once they understand who the Klan are then they can make  a fair assessment of what part they are playing in this whole scheme of  violence toward their own people,” Wilson-Bey said.

Those  interested in acquiring a shirt or finding out more about the Moorish  Unification Council can contact the group by calling Wilson-Bey at (215)  476-0280.

Root Cause  and Open Society Foundations Campaign for Black Male Achievement to Launch a  Leadership and Sustainability Institute

BOSTON -To  bolster the efforts of advocates and organizations

working to improve the life outcomes of black males in the U.S.,

Root Cause and the Open Society Foundations Campaign for

Black Male Achievement are launching a Leadership and

Sustainability Institute. The project is meant to strengthen the

capacity of the campaign's grantees and other nonprofit organizations  working within the field of black male achievement.

"It's going to take decades of effort to make real headway on

the many difficult issues that black men and boys in this country

face so we are acting with the fierce urgency of now," said  Shawn Dove, the Campaign Director of the Campaign for Black Male Achievement.  "We're excited to partner with Root Cause on this important legacy:

an institute that provides individuals and organizations

working on black males achievement with the tools and

support they need to ensure success."

Black men and boys face major racial disparities, unequal

opportunities, and achievement gaps at nearly every

stage in life including early childhood, primary and secondary

school, college, and employment.

For example, by 2004, 50 percent of black men in their 20s

who lacked a college education were jobless, as were 72 percent

of high school dropouts; 42 percent of all black boys have

failed an entire grade at least once and only 18 percent of

black men ages 20-21 are enrolled in college; the Bureau of

Justice Statistics projected that 28 percent of black males in  America

will serve some time in state or federal prison.

While over the years numerous leaders, advocates and organizations  have

made major strides in improving the life outcomes and achievements of  black men and boys, sustaining a strong and consistent multi-decade focus on  the issue has been a great struggle. An 1995 Urban Institute study found that  of the 51 programs focused on black men and boys surveyed, after 10 years a  quarter no longer existed and less than a quarter still maintained  programming focusing on black males. Organizations working in the black male  achievement field have

faced, and continue to face, more obstacles compared to the overall  nonprofit sector including:

The black male achievement field has been plagued by inconsistent  philanthropic support. Organizations often work in isolation from one  another, may be working in segregated neighborhoods, and have lower access to  networks and resources to help grow their impact. Efforts to coordinate the  field are often short term, inconsistent, and unstructured. Available growth  and sustainability resources often lack sufficient cultural context or focus  on organizations working in this field, and those few service providers that  are dedicated to the field are often small, geographically scattered, have in  consistent cash flow, slow growth of impact, and challenges to  sustainability.

About the Open Society Foundations Campaign  for Black Male Achievement
The Campaign for Black Male Achievement is a multi-issue, cross-fund strategy  to address black men and boys' exclusion from economic, social, educational,  and political life in the United States. The campaign responds to a growing  body of research that reveals the intensification of black males' negative  life outcomes. It builds on U.S. Programs' mission to support individuals and  organizations that nurture the development of a more democratic, just  society, as well as the Open Society Foundations' expertise and past work to  reduce incarceration, promote racial justice, and support youth engagement  and leadership development.

Comcast  unveils new plan to combat digital divide

Comcast has announced that it will begin offering a new  service, Internet  Essentials, in time for the 2011-12 school year.
This initiative will directly address the major barriers that  many in our communities face for in-home broadband adoption:   affordability and lack of digital literacy.
In today’s world, it is important for everyone to be digitally  literate.  Broadband adoption is vital for our communities because it  helps improve our children’s education, our local economy, and the ability  for members of our communities to find jobs and benefit from opportunities  available online.
Comcast Internet Essentials will provide eligible families with:
-- Affordable home Internet service ($9.95 per month)
    -- A low-cost computer ($149.99 plus taxes)
-- Access to free internet training – online, in print and in  classroom (at established community training sites)
Internet Essentials will be available everywhere that Comcast  offers its high-speed Internet service.  Students in more than 4,000  school districts in 39 states and the District of Columbia will be able to  participate.
Comcast will accept new Internet Essentials participants for at  least three years, through the end of the 2013-14 school year.  Any  household that qualifies during this three-year period will remain eligible  for Internet Essentials, provided the household still qualifies for the  program, until that child graduates from high school.

FREQUENTLY  ASKED QUESTIONS

Q: Are these manufacturer coupons or  coupons that I print on my computer?

A:  All of our coupons are actual manufacturer coupons. Fewer and fewer retailers  accept coupons that are printed from your computer because of a huge increase  in counterfeit coupons. Actual manufacturer coupons which we issue are  accepted everywhere that coupons are accepted.

Q:  Can these coupons be doubled?
A: Yes. These are manufacturer issued coupons and may be doubled in any store  that offers double coupons.

Q:  What are the face values and the expiration dates of these coupons?
A: Being manufacturer coupons, the manufacturer determines the face values of  the coupons. We currently stock coupons ranging in value from 40 cents to  5.00 dollars. The coupon expiration dates are generally valid for 90 days.

Q:  How can I use $1,000.00 worth of coupons in 90 days?
A: With our program, you get to choose the coupons you want, when you want  them. This way you never have to worry about the coupons expiring.

Q: How do I choose the coupons  I want?
A: Each coupon book contains coupon request slips which you fill out and send  in. Those coupons are then mailed to you.                                           ----- Coalition  members! Activate ‘Your’web link on The Coalition,  Inc. web site -----
