Hereeeeeeeeeeeeees... Kathy’s Korner! A discouraged wife stood in front of the open garage staring hopelessly at the piles of old L/P’s, 8-Track tapes and nearly antique bulky stereo equipment she had been trying to convince her husband to get rid of. Intending to soothe her, he put his arm around her and said “Honey, look at it this way. When I die you can have a garage sale, and when the men come to look at this stuff, you can pick out a new husband.” She leaned her head on his shoulder and replied… “Any man who would be interested in this stuff would not be my type.”

I see little of more importance to the future of our country and of civilization than full recognition of the place of the artist. If art is to nourish the roots of our culture, society must set the artist free to follow his vision wherever it takes him. Pauline Kael

COMING UP
Odunde Afrikan Street Festival
June 10th 2012
ODUNDE attracts UP TO 500,000 people annually and is one of the
largest community- based street festivals held in the country. The
festival, whose concept originates from the Yoruba people of Nigeria,
West Africa, celebrates the coming of another year for African
Americans and Africanized people around the world. It is an occasion
highlighted by a colorful procession from 23rd and South Streets to
the Schuylkill River where an offering of fruit and flowers is made
to Oshun, the Yoruba goddess of the river. ODUNDE is also known for
its authentic African marketplace featuring vendors from around the
world selling merchandise from many African nations, the Caribbean
and Brazil.
Each year, the second Sunday in June, ODUNDE, one of the
nations oldest African American street festivals take place. ODUNDE
will be celebrating its 37TH year in the traditional south
Philadelphia location near 23rd and South streets. The festival
started in 1975 with a $100.00 grant and neighbors from Fernandez's
south Philadelphia community. In two years the ODUNDE Festival
exploded. The eclectic mix of vendors, entertainment and music
started to draw people from around and beyond the region and each
year continues to be no different.
While the actual festival will only last one day, Odunde is a weeklong
affair that incorporates celebration with business and culture. Some
of the week’s highlights include:
June 1st: The Kick Off event at Arts Garage, 1533 Ridge Avenue from
5-10 p.m. $20. It will feature food, live music, and a video
highlighting the African and Bahian cultures.
June 2nd: Children will learn different African Dances and drumming

The Philadelphia Chapter of NCOBRA
will host the
2012 conference of the National Coalition of
Blacks for Reparations in America (NCOBRA).
June 22-24,
2012
Church of the Advocate
1801 W. Diamond
St.
Philadelphia, PA
Why reparations?
There are those who
ask "Why Reparations? Slavery ended in 1865?" After the
passage of the 13Th and 14Th amendments, laws were passed to
re-enslave people of African descent through Jim Crow laws. The
New Jim Crow is a result of the low-intensity war against the
Black community under the guise of a "War on Drugs," in
addition to ongoing discrimination, and an extension of the
slavery experience for Black people.
What can we do: We can
begin to work together to define the strategy, plan the approach
and implement the solution. One way to do this is to come to
Philadelphia in June for the 2012 NCOBRA Conference. Other ways
include joining with other groups working on the reparations
issue. Organizations from the Nation of Islam to the NAACP have
endorsed reparations. Now let's do more than talk the talk, let's
walk the walk. We must decide what must be done to reclaim,
reconstruct and restore our people to their former greatness. See
you in Philadelphia. Share with your friends!

A HAND UP!
"None of us has gotten where we are solely by pulling ourselves up from our own bootstraps. We got here because somebody bent down and helped us." - Thurgood Marshall
America’s Original Savings Network
As amazing as it may sound many people do not realize how easy it is
to LEGALLY stop paying for their groceries! This is how the one hour
television show began for the company whose website is at:
A: All of our coupons are actual manufacturer coupons. Fewer and fewer retailers accept coupons that are printed from your computer because of a huge increase in counterfeit coupons. Actual manufacturer coupons which we issue are accepted everywhere that coupons are accepted.
Q: Can these coupons be doubled?
A: Yes. These are
manufacturer issued coupons and may be doubled in any store that
offers double coupons.
Q: What are the face values and the expiration dates
of these coupons?
A: Being manufacturer coupons, the
manufacturer determines the face values of the coupons. We
currently stock coupons ranging in value from 40 cents to 5.00
dollars. The coupon expiration dates are generally valid for 90
days.
Q: How can I use $1,000.00 worth of coupons in 90
days?
A: With our program, you get to choose the coupons you
want, when you want them. This way you never have to worry about
the coupons expiring.
Q: How do I choose the coupons I want?
A: Each
coupon book contains coupon request slips which you fill out and
send in. Those coupons are then mailed to you.
