Hereeeeeeeeeeeeees... Kathy’s Korner!

A discouraged wife stood in front of the open garage staring hopelessly at the piles of old L/P’s, 8-Track tapes and nearly antique bulky stereo equipment she had been trying to convince her husband to get rid of. Intending to soothe her, he put his arm around her and said “Honey, look at it this way. When I die you can have a garage sale, and when the men come to look at this stuff, you can pick out a new husband.” She leaned her head on his shoulder and replied… “Any man who would be interested in this stuff would not be my type.”

HEALTH MATTERS

Energy Drinks And Alcohol: A Dangerous Combo

BlackDoctor.org) -- According to new research mixing energy drinks with alcohol is a dangerous combination.  A new study, involving more than 4,000 students, has found that drinking cocktails of alcohol and energy drinks doubles the risk of clubbers getting hurt or being taken advantage of sexually.

Energy drinks such as Red Bull, Irn-Bru 32 and Lucozade, often contain high levels of caffeine and other ingredients, and mixing them with alcohol has become a popular way of boosting energy levels in order to keep dancing all night.

The researchers at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Centre in the United States, questioned 4,271 college students about their drinking habits and the consequences.

It was found that of those who had drunk alcohol in the previous 30 days, a quarter (24 per cent) said they had consumed energy cocktails; when their behavior was compared with students who did not mix alcohol and energy drinks, the group were twice as likely to be hurt or injured after drinking, twice as likely to need medical attention and twice as likely to travel with a drunken driver.

This group also faced double the risk of either taking sexual advantage of someone else, or being taken advantage of themselves.

The cocktails also seemed to affect the amount they drank as in a typical drinking session, those on mixed drinks drank up to 36 per cent more than the other students and also reported twice as many episodes of weekly drunkenness.

Dr Mary Claire O'Brien, lead researcher for the study, says they knew anecdotally that college students mix energy drinks and alcohol in order to drink more, and to drink longer.

But Dr O'Brien says they were surprised that the risk of serious and potentially deadly consequences is so much higher for those who mix energy drinks with alcohol.

According to Dr O'Brien mixing caffeine (a stimulant) with alcohol (a depressant) equates to "getting into a car and stepping on the gas pedal and the brake at the same time".

She says students whose motor skills, visual reaction times, and judgment are impaired by alcohol may not perceive that they are intoxicated as readily when they're also ingesting a stimulant, as while the symptoms of drunkenness are reduced the drunkenness is not.

Dr O'Brien says some energy drinks contain as much as 300 milligrams of caffeine and has called for students to be informed of the risks of mixing alcohol with energy drinks.

Experts say there is currently very little information on the consequences of mixing alcohol with energy drinks and young people, need clear guidance on what impact different levels of drinking can have.

Energy drinks often contain a mixture of ingredients, such as caffeine, vitamins and herbs and products such as guarana, ginseng and ginkgo biloba; many also have high levels of sugar to help boost energy levels.

But caffeine remains the main energy-boosting ingredient, with an average energy-drink containing about the same amount as a small cup of coffee; about 65 per cent of energy-drink users are under the age of 35.

There has been criticism over the potential health effects of drinking large amounts of caffeine and France has banned the sale of the popular Red Bull brand following the death of an 18-year-old who played basketball shortly after consuming several cans of the drink; an inquest ruled that he died from Sudden Adult Death Syndrome.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) limits caffeine to 65 milligrams per serving of a food or beverage but as energy drinks are currently not regulated by the FDA, they can contain as much as 300 milligrams of caffeine in a single serving.

Dr O'Brien was speaking at the annual meeting of the American Public Health Association in Washington DC.

Recent research found higher concentrations of parabens in the upper quadrants of the breast and axillary area, where antiperspirants are usually applied, suggesting they may contribute to the development of breast cancer. One or more paraben esters were detected in 99 percent of the tissue samples collected from mastectomies. In 60 percent of the samples, all five paraben esters were present

Overall, topical application of personal care products containing parabens appear to be the greatest source of exposure to these estrogen-mimicking chemicals, far surpassing the risk of the aluminum in antiperspirants

Aluminum chloride—the active ingredient in antiperspirants—has been found to act similarly to the way oncogenes work to provide molecular transformations in cancer cells. Like parabens, aluminum salts also mimic estrogen, and bioaccumulate in breast tissue, which can raise your breast cancer risk

Despite the fact that parabens are used in such a wide variety of products,

their safety is primarily based on a rat study from 1956, as modern

toxicology studies are lacking, and not a single study on the chemicals’ carcinogenity follow acceptable regulatory standard carcinogenity study

protocols, according to a recent review.

GREEN PIECE

Green Living Tips for Today’s Young People

In today’s ecologically conscious world, many smart young people are heeding the green living tips offered by parents and older peers.  The benefits are clear. Eco-friendly products translate to huge cost savings and minimize harm to the environment.

So how do today’s young people show they care for the environment? Let’s start with modern commuting trends.  If you’re college-bound kid is not the lucky recipient of an environmentally friendly car (as a graduation or birthday gift), then chances are, he/she may be taking public transportation (which is good) or driving the traditional car. Don’t look now but ingenious minds have devised an online social rideshare and carpool matching system that uses a popular social networking site to hook riders up with drivers en route to a common destination.

For the young ladies in the family who love to shop, green living tips they may have gravitated to include bringing their own eco tote bag so as not to amass more plastic bags than can be reused at home. In so doing, young gals (and their shopaholic moms, too) get to save lots of trees and keep plastic bags out of landfills.

Young ones also contribute to resource conversation by keeping in mind other green living tips like taking quick showers, buying and using products – like organic cosmetics -- that do not contain synthetic substances, as well as clothes and accessories made of organic cotton or hemp. Switching off room lights and computer equipment (including the monitor) when not in use and going for green food options are likewise some of the ways to lessen the eco footprint.

Odunde Afrikan Street Festival

June 10th 2012

ODUNDE attracts UP TO 500,000 people annually and is one of the

largest community- based street festivals held in the country. The

festival, whose concept originates from the Yoruba people of Nigeria,

West Africa, celebrates the coming of another year for African

Americans and Africanized people around the world. It is an occasion

highlighted by a colorful procession from 23rd and South Streets to

the Schuylkill River where an offering of fruit and flowers is made

to Oshun, the Yoruba goddess of the river. ODUNDE is also known for

its authentic African marketplace featuring vendors from around the

world selling merchandise from many African nations, the Caribbean

and Brazil.

Each year, the second Sunday in June, ODUNDE, one of the

nations oldest African American street festivals take place. ODUNDE

Philadelphia location near 23rd and South streets. The festival

started in 1975 with a $100.00 grant and neighbors from Fernandez's

exploded. The eclectic mix of vendors, entertainment and music

started to draw people from around and beyond the region and each

year continues to be no different.

While the actual festival will only last one day, Odunde is a weeklong

The Philadelphia Chapter of NCOBRA

will host the

2012 conference of the National Coalition of Blacks for Reparations in America (NCOBRA).
June 22-24, 2012
Church of the Advocate
1801 W. Diamond St.
Philadelphia, PA
Why reparations?
There are those who ask "Why Reparations? Slavery ended in 1865?" After the passage of the 13Th and 14Th amendments, laws were passed to re-enslave people of African descent through Jim Crow laws. The New Jim Crow is a result of the low-intensity war against the Black community under the guise of a "War on Drugs," in addition to ongoing discrimination, and an extension of the slavery experience for Black people.
What can we do: We can begin to work together to define the strategy, plan the approach and implement the solution. One way to do this is to come to Philadelphia in June for the 2012 NCOBRA Conference. Other ways include joining with other groups working on the reparations issue. Organizations from the Nation of Islam to the NAACP have endorsed reparations. Now let's do more than talk the talk, let's walk the walk. We must decide what must be done to reclaim, reconstruct and restore our people to their former greatness. See you in Philadelphia. Share with your friends!

A: All of our coupons are actual manufacturer coupons. Fewer and fewer retailers accept coupons that are printed from your computer because of a huge increase in counterfeit coupons. Actual manufacturer coupons which we issue are accepted everywhere that coupons are accepted.

Q: Can these coupons be doubled?
A: Yes. These are manufacturer issued coupons and may be doubled in any store that offers double coupons.

Q: What are the face values and the expiration dates of these coupons?
A: Being manufacturer coupons, the manufacturer determines the face values of the coupons. We currently stock coupons ranging in value from 40 cents to 5.00 dollars. The coupon expiration dates are generally valid for 90 days.

Q: How can I use $1,000.00 worth of coupons in 90 days?
A: With our program, you get to choose the coupons you want, when you want them. This way you never have to worry about the coupons expiring.

Q: How do I choose the coupons I want?
A: Each coupon book contains coupon request slips which you fill out and send in. Those coupons are then mailed to you. ----- Coalition members! Activate ‘Your’ web link on The Coalition, Inc. web site -----
