WORD-OF-THE-WEEK

pervicacious \puhr-vih-KAY-shuhs\, Refusing to change one's ideas, behavior, etc.; stubborn; obstinate.

Greetings Coalition Family!

To Protect And Serve

In the year 2007, too many unsolved murders of young black men in the city of Philadelphia, many cases with 0 leads and no hope of a solution. A police officer is killed during a taproom robbery; the suspect is custody less than two weeks later. Two retired policemen murdered and the suspect is behind bars within hours, with the police commissioner all but guaranteeing that when convicted, the suspect will never see the street again. A rookie police officer is shot, suspect taken into custody within the hour. The police make no secret that they pursue shooters of law enforcement agents with more vigor than they do shooters of the ‘average’ citizen, claiming that ‘If someone will shoot a cop, then the general public is in grave peril’. How much fertilizer is that? Police personnel in many cases have bulls-eyes on their backs simply because they have to deal with the negative elements of society, and therefore anger those who are already criminal-minded and the most likely in possession of firearms and of a temperament to use them. The ‘average’ citizen does not come into this kind of contact with this element of society! So that logic is extremely flawed!
Police vigorously pursue their attackers because they must make an example of them so that it never appears that law enforcement is soft or vulnerable to successful attack. In the pursuit of a cop-killer, the commissioner stated “…money and time are not an object.” Wouldn’t it be a blessing if they felt that way about the ‘average’ citizen, our children?

To protect and serve has no meaning in the community, it has no meaning because the slogan is not intended for us, it is directed at us. Take notice that the police departments all over this land are designed to keep the ‘average’ citizen in place. They are there to protect the interests of the powerful and affluent, those who are important to commerce. Have you ever been the victim of a break-in and had to wait an hour or more for the police to show up just to take a report? Ever had your vehicle broken into and had an unconcerned officer show up and fill out a report only to advise you that it is unlikely your property will ever be recovered? Ask yourself these questions, how long would it take for the police to respond to a break-in at Macy’s dept. store? What would be their posture if a Fed Ex truck were broken into on your block? These answers will dispel the myth that the police are here to serve the general populace and that they are overworked in our neighborhoods.

The police make sure the powerbrokers sleep soundly at night. The police organization is in place to maintain the status quo. Copyright © 2008 G. R. Adams

With the winter moratorium over for Utility shutoffs, many families have to make the decision to pay their utility bills while sacrificing necessities such as summer food for their children. On the newly designed CAP4Kids website at www.cap4kids.org/philadelphia , under the Utilities subsection (http://cap4kids.org/philadelphia/parent-handouts/housing-utilities/utility-programs/) you will find listing of utilities programs for low income families as well as energy saving ideas.

Also, under the Food/Nutrition subsection of emergency food resources (http://cap4kids.org/philadelphia/parent-handouts/food-nutrition-breastfeeding/emergency-food-resources/) you will find summer food programs for kids as well as a listing of various emergency food resources in Philadelphia.

Greater Philadelphia Coalition Against Hunger

New hotline helps families find free summer meals for kids

Starting this week, families in Philadelphia can call a toll-free hotline to find nearby locations that offer free summer meals for children. Operated by the Greater Philadelphia Coalition Against Hunger, the hotline is 1-855-252-MEAL (6325). Families can also text “MEAL” to 84700

to receive a call back.
“During the regular school year, tens of thousands of low-income students rely on free or reduced-price meals at school,” said Carey Morgan, Coalition Executive Director.
“But when school is out and they’re not getting that food, they face higher risks of hunger and malnutrition. The Philly Summer Meals Hotline will help families fill that void, by referring them to nearby recreation centers, parks, churches and community organizations that offer free meals to kids and teens.”
Last year, more than 119,000 children in Pennsylvania received summer meals. But that’s less than one-fourth of the 553,000 low-income children who received free or reduced-priced lunch during the regular school year—a sign that many low-income children who need summer meals aren’t getting them, according to a recent report from the Food Research and Action Center. Recent budget cuts have also forced the School District of Philadelphia to reduce the number of summer programs it offers, meaning fewer students will be eating free meals in summer school this year.
Despite the change, “there are still nearly 1,000 sites serving free summer meals in Philadelphia, so there’s no reason any child should go hungry this summer,” Morgan said.
Free summer meals are available to children age 18 and under. There is no registration or income requirement at most sites.
  Visit www.hungercoalition.org for more information..

Text “MEAL” to 84700 to receive a call back from the coalition.

HEALTH MATTERS

Exercise, meds both help depressed heart patients

By Andrew M. Seaman

NEW YORK | Wed Aug 1, 2012 3:37pm EDT

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - People with heart disease who are also depressed may get as much relief from their depression symptoms with regular exercise as with medication, a new study suggests.

Researchers found that of 101 heart patients with signs of depression, those who exercised for 90 minutes per week and those who started taking Zoloft both improved significantly compared to participants assigned to drug-free placebo pills.

Pfizer supplied the Zoloft (known generically as sertraline) and placebos for the study, but researchers said the company was not involved with any other part of it.

Dr. Alan Rozanski, who wrote an editorial accompanying the new study, said exercise can be thought of as another "potent tool on the shelf" to fight depression in heart patients.

"The attractiveness of exercise is that it has so many other physical benefits and it ought to be something very highly considered," said Rozanski, of St. Luke's and Roosevelt Hospitals in New York.

According to the authors, up to 40 percent of heart patients have symptoms of depression - and depression itself has been linked to a higher risk of further heart trouble.

Those findings, they say, led the American Heart Association to recommend heart patients be screened for depression.

Past studies have produced mixed results on whether or not antidepressants or other established treatments may ease depression in heart patients. There is, however, a growing body of research that suggests exercise may help.

On Tuesday, researchers published a study of over 2,300 people with heart failure randomly assigned to exercise or usual care, which found the extra activity led to modest reductions in depression symptoms (see Reuters Health story of July 31, 2012).

For the new study, out Wednesday, "We wanted to evaluate exercise and antidepressant medications in patients with heart disease and elevated depressive symptoms," said James Blumenthal, the lead researcher on both the current study and the earlier report.

Blumenthal, a clinical psychologist at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, North Carolina, recruited 101 heart patients with depression between June 2006 and September 2010.

Those patients were separated into three groups: 37 went to supervised exercise sessions three times per week for a total of 90 minutes, 40 were given Zoloft and 24 took a placebo pill, with each intervention lasting four months.

VALUE' IN EXERCISE

The researchers analyzed participants' depression scores on a standard scale from 0 to 68, where 0 to 8 is considered normal and higher scores reflect more severe depression.

Before the start of treatment, each group's average score ranged from about 13.5 to 14.5.

Depression symptoms improved over time across the board. Participants in the exercise and medication groups, however, saw a bigger benefit than those on the placebo.

Scores fell by 6.1 points in the Zoloft group, by 7.5 points among exercisers and by 4.5 points in the placebo group.

There wasn't a clear difference between the exercise and antidepressant group on those overall scores, the researchers reported in the Journal of American College of Cardiology.

But compared to those treated with Zoloft, more people who started out with major depressive disorder and were assigned to the exercise sessions improved enough for their symptoms to be considered in the normal range.

And exercisers were less likely to be tired or report sexual problems than people on antidepressants.

The study was a randomized controlled trial, considered the "gold standard" of medical research, but the researchers warn that they had a small number of participants. Still, the majority of people involved stuck to their treatment plans - possibly because even exercise wasn't too time consuming.

"I think 90 minutes (per week) seems to be sufficient for most patients," Blumenthal told Reuters Health. The big jump is from doing nothing to doing something."

The Surprising Link Between Air Pollution & Diabetes

Where you live may put you at risk.

Air pollution is not just bad for your lungs; it may increase your chances of having diabetes. According to a new study by Children’s Hospital in Boston, people who live in areas with the highest levels of pollution have a 20% greater chance of getting adult-onset (Type 2) diabetes.

Surgery for Diabetes?

After adjusting for lifestyle factors like weight and education, air pollution remained associated with this type of diabetes,” says study co-author Dr. Allison Goldfine of Harvard’s Joslin Diabetes Center.

Over 23 million Americans have diabetes, and experts now believe that environmental factors may play a role. Air pollution might cause chronic low-grade inflammation, “and inflammation can make you more susceptible to the disease,” Dr. Goldfine says.

5 Common Myths About Diabetes

While more studies are under way, consider this healthy living twofer: “Walk and ride your bike as much as possible,” Dr. Goldfine urges. “You’ll reduce pollution and get the exercise you need to prevent diabetes.”

Rather than conduct it's Men Meeting Monday evenings, the Fruit of Islam (The Men) have mobilized in the streets in a reported "100" cities across America. The objective is to organize community wide efforts of every element in the community to clean up the so-called "up tick in violence" that haunts us. Open Letter To Our Community: Save Sistas' Place

It is called Sistas' Place, but in realty, it has always been our place. For 17 years, Sistas' Place has remained one of the most courageous, significant, independent, stand-alone cultural institutions serving the Black Community.

This is one cultural and political institution that truly belongs to us, and as such we will sustain it. Sistas' Place has no corporate sponsors, wealthy guardian angels, but Sistas' Place has you and I. And the good news is that 's enough.

To address their critical financial challenge, we are launching a Sistas' Place

membership drive . We need 400 people in the next 20 days to become sustaining members of Sistas' Place by buying a $30 membership. Please

COMING UP

Million Fathers March

The Million Father March is an opportunity for Black men to show their commitment to the educational lives of their children on the first day of school and throughout the school year. On the first day of school each year since the March began in 2004, Black fathers, relatives, men, and significant male caregivers are asked to take their children to their first day of school. Fathers, grandfathers, foster fathers, stepfathers, uncles, cousins, big brothers, significant male caregivers and friends of the family will participate in the event. Last year, 100,000,000 fathers in 767 cities took their children to school on the first day of school. This year we expect 1,250,000 fathers in 800 cities to participate in the Million Father March 2012.

Among the participating cities is our very own Philadelphia. A former educator and proud father David Fattah is the coordinator for the Million Father March 2012 here. This year for the first time The House of Umoja will be creating a companion journal to accompany the March and would like to distribute it to the participating fathers and care givers and also the interested public not only here in Philadelphia but also in the other participating cities.

The Federation of Southern Cooperatives to honor Dick Gregory

Celebrating its 45th Anniversary in Birmingham and Epes, Alabama
Please Join us!!!

ATLANTA....On Thursday, August 16, 2012 at the Birmingham Sheraton in Birmingham, Alabama, the Federation of Southern Cooperatives/Land Assistance Fund (Federation) will honor the renowned Dick Gregory at its Estelle Witherspoon Lifetime Achievement Award Dinner. Congressman Sanford Bishop (D-GA) will serve as honorary chair of the event. The Annual Meeting will be held on August 17 & 18 at the Federation's Rural Training and Research Center in Epes, Alabama.

The theme for the 45th Anniversary is "Cooperatives Make a Better World". The theme acknowledges not only the significant contributions made by cooperatives in the South, the country and the world, but also that this year has been designated by the United Nations as the "International Year of Cooperatives".

The Annual Meeting celebration at the Federation's Rural Training & Research Center in Epes, Alabama will include workshops and plenaries on the upcoming Farm Bill, Rural Development programs that impact our rural communities, an update on the Black Farmer Lawsuit and information about the women's lawsuit filed against the USDA. There will also be a fish fry and auction on Friday evening followed by state caucuses on Saturday.

"We look forward to seeing farmers, friends and supporters from around the country at our Annual Meeting in Epes and to honor Dick Gregory in Birmingham," said Ralph Paige, Executive Director of the Federation. "It's the time of year when we assess what has been done and still needs to be done in both the state and federal policy program areas to assist rural communities....and we depend on the advice and direction from our membership and other stakeholders for these decisions."

For more information, please call Jackie Ward in our Atlanta office at 404 765 0991 or go to our website at www.federation.coop.

Note: The Federation/LAF, now in its 45th year, assists Black family farmers across the South with farm management, debt restructuring, alternative crop suggestions, marketing expertise and a whole range of services to ensure family farm survivability.

COMPUTERS AND TECHNOLOGY

Free online journal focuses on technology for nonprofits
Technology can help nonprofits create the change they want to see in

the world. But even with daily evidence of world-changing innovations

and applications of technology, it's difficult for nonprofit leaders to

know how to apply it to their missions.
NTEN:Change, a free online journal from the

Nonprofit Technology Network,

provides the guidance and practical considerations nonprofits need to

make the sound investments and decisions that will help them meet

their goals.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q: Are these manufacturer coupons or coupons that I print on my computer?

A: All of our coupons are actual manufacturer coupons. Fewer and fewer retailers accept coupons that are printed from your computer because of a huge increase in counterfeit coupons. Actual manufacturer coupons which we issue are accepted everywhere that coupons are accepted.

Q: Can these coupons be doubled?
A: Yes. These are manufacturer issued coupons and may be doubled in any store that offers double coupons.

Q: What are the face values and the expiration dates of these coupons?
A: Being manufacturer coupons, the manufacturer determines the face values of the coupons. We currently stock coupons ranging in value from 40 cents to 5.00 dollars. The coupon expiration dates are generally valid for 90 days.

Q: How can I use $1,000.00 worth of coupons in 90 days?
A: With our program, you get to choose the coupons you want, when you want them. This way you never have to worry about the coupons expiring.

Q: How do I choose the coupons I want?
A: Each coupon book contains coupon request slips which you fill out and send in. Those coupons are then mailed to you. ----- Coalition members! Activate ‘Your’ web link on The Coalition, Inc. web site -----
