The divide of race has been America's constant curse. And each new wave of immigrants gives new targets to old prejudices. Prejudice and contempt, cloaked in the pretense of religious or political conviction are no different. These forces have nearly destroyed our nation in the past. They plague us still. They fuel the fanaticism of terror. And they torment the lives of millions in fractured nations all around the world. These obsessions cripple both those who hate and, of course, those who are hated, robbing both of what they might become. – William Jefferson Clinton

A group of girlfriends is on vacation when they see a 5-story hotel with a sign that reads: “For Women Only.” Since they are without their boyfriends and husbands, they decide to go in. The bouncer, a very attractive guy, explains to them how it works. “We have 5 floors. Go up floor by floor, and once you find what you are looking for, you can stay there. It’s easy to decide since each floor has a sign telling you what’s inside.” So they start going up and on the first floor the sign reads: “All the men on this floor are short and plain.” The friends laugh and without hesitation move on to the next floor. The sign on the second floor reads: “All the men here are short and handsome.” Still, this isn’t good enough, so the friends continue on up. They reach the third floor and the sign reads: “All the men here are tall and plain.” They still want to do better, and so, knowing there are still two floors left, they continued on up. On the fourth floor, the sign is perfect: “All the men here are tall and handsome.” The women get all excited and are going in when they realize that there is still one floor left. Wondering what they are missing, they head on up to the fifth floor. There they find a sign that reads: “There are no men here. This floor was built only to prove that there is no way to please a woman.”

“When Europeans arrived on this continent, they blew it with the Native Americans. They plowed over them, taking as much as they could of their land and valuables, and respecting almost nothing about the native cultures. They lost the wisdom of the indigenous peoples-wisdom about the land and connectedness to the great web of life…We have another chance with all these refugees. People come here penniless but not cultureless. They bring us gifts. We can synthesize the best of our traditions with the best of theirs. We can teach and learn from each other to produce a better America…” ― Mary Bray Pipher

Nearly all Americans have ancestors who braved the oceans—liberty-loving risk takers in search of an ideal—the largest voluntary migrations in recorded history. Across the Pacific, across the Atlantic, they came from every point on the compass—many passing beneath the Statue of Liberty—with fear and vision, with sorrow and adventure, fleeing tyranny or terror, seeking haven, and all seeking hope…Immigration is not just a link to America’s past; it’s also a bridge to America’s future. – George H. Greetings Coalition Family! An open letter to the governor of Arizona and the president of the United States of America
I’m going to make this short and sweet. The aboriginal peoples from Alaska to Argentina are the natural legal residents of all the Americas. If there is such a thing as an illegal alien, it is the criminal element who raped, stole, murdered and kidnapped to establish illegal colonies and corporations here and elsewhere around the globe.
Restricting the movement of the original inhabitants through their ancestral homelands is immoral, and as illegal as having someone break into your home and deny free access to you and your progeny.
Does South Africa bring back any memories? Oppression is oppression, no matter the language!
The above is solely the personal opinion of this writer and does not represent any entity I am affiliated with. Ed.

HEALTH MATTERS
New York urges new mothers to breastfeed babies By Ray Sanchez NEW YORK | Wed Aug 1, 2012 1:08pm EDT NEW YORK (Reuters) - New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg and state officials are pushing initiatives aimed at encouraging new mothers to breastfeed their babies, drawing criticism from some parents who say officials are interfering with their health choices. State health commissioners announced on Tuesday that letters highlighting the importance of breastfeeding were being sent to hospitals, reminding them of regulations limiting unnecessary formula feedings for breastfed newborns. The state initiative coincides with Bloomberg's call for hospitals to lock away their baby formula and have nurses encourage new mothers to breastfeed. Under the mayor's plan, slated to start September 3, the city will keep a record of the number of bottles that hospitals stock and use. Formula would be signed out like medication. The pro-breastfeeding campaign has drawn the ire of some women who argue it stigmatizes infant formula and interferes with a mother's choice of what to feed her child. A number of the city's other health initiatives -- including cracking down on large-sized sodas and banning smoking in public places -- have attracted similar criticism from those who accuse the mayor of creating a "nanny" state. "I breastfed both of my kids and it took me a good three weeks before I figured it out," said Rene Syler, who wrote about the issue on her website Goodenoughmother.com. "I can't imagine what it must be like to be in the hospital with someone sort of standing over your shoulder and lecturing you every time you ask for a bottle to feed your crying baby." Under current regulations, hospitals are only allowed to provide formula to infants who have an indicated medical reason and a doctor's order for the supplemental feedings, the state health department said in a statement. Still, only 39.7 percent of newborn infants in New York are exclusively breastfed -- well below the federal government goal of 70 percent, the state health department said. Roughly half of breastfed infants received supplemental formula in the hospital. "We recognize that there are women that won't be able to breastfeed or chose to not breastfeed for a variety of reasons and that is a choice they should be able to make," said Dr. Barbara Wallace, the state health department's director of chronic disease prevention. The state health department said the benefits of breastfeeding included fewer episodes of acute respiratory illnesses, inner-ear infections and gastroenteritis. Mothers who do not breastfeed are at increased risk for postpartum bleeding and anemia, and have higher rates of breast cancer later in life, the health department statement said. COMING UP
Million Fathers March
The
Million Father March is an opportunity for Black men to show their
commitment to the educational lives of their children on the first
day of school and throughout the school year. On the first day of
school each year since the March began in 2004, Black fathers,
relatives, men, and significant male caregivers are asked to take
their children to their first day of school. Fathers,
grandfathers, foster fathers, stepfathers, uncles, cousins, big
brothers, significant male caregivers and friends of the family
will participate in the event. Last year, 100,000,000 fathers in
767 cities took their children to school on the first day of
school. This year we expect 1,250,000 fathers in 800 cities to
participate in the Million Father March 2012.
Among
the participating cities is our very own Philadelphia. A former
educator and proud father David Fattah is the coordinator for the
Million Father March 2012 here. This year for the first time The
House of Umoja will be creating a companion journal to accompany
the March and would like to distribute it to the participating
fathers and care givers and also the interested public not only
here in Philadelphia but also in the other participating
cities.

The National Alliance of Women Veterans
Presents
Patriot Day and National Day of Service
September 11th, 2012 marks our third year for celebrating those lives lost at the World Trade Centers in New York City. Our nation is being urged to
honor that tragedy in our cities and neighborhoods throughout the country. April 21st, 2009, Patriot Day and National Day of Service and
Remembrance were enacted by President Barack Obama and are being observed and celebrated throughout the country. The National Alliance of
Women Veterans Incorporated, a Philadelphia-based organization has participated in community activities in honor of this observance throughout the
city of Philadelphia.
The National Alliance of Women Veterans, Incorporated is concerned about “the state of our communities” since the attack on our country in
September 11th, 2001. Since the attacks on the World Trade Center, this country has been alerted to the vulnerability of our existence as Americans.
The security once felt has been agitated by our government’s need to fight “terror” and has changed the way we now live in many ways.
On a national level, our governments and cabinet members have been extremely involved in drafting legislation and policies to support the fight on
terror. However, we need to express the impact this fight has on our citizens and communities. Philadelphia is directly addressing the fight on terror
and has among the many agencies the Homeland Security Department and other federal entities to defend against any threats to our city.
NAWV, Inc. hopes to educate and empower communities to ensure that those with limited resources have an ability to protect and defend themselves;
Red Cross, Salvation Army and other local organizations and NGOs are equipped to provide training and support in the event of any unfortunate
situation. Community leaders and organizations are urged to become involved in the effort for educating and empowering Americans who reside in
the communities of Philadelphia.
CPR, Survival and Emergency Preparedness are skills being taught throughout the city led by many organizations. Where we are Post-9-11 and what
can we do to ensure safety and survival for the residents of Philadelphia?
On September 11, 2012, we are hosting a discussion, networking event to talk about the grassroots activities on the issues related to Post-9-11. We
want to highlight the following issues:
Our returning military and their families who live among us
The Training and education of our communities
Where are our strengths and weaknesses at the community levels
Volunteerism and community service
First Responders and Military Impact on Community
The National Alliance of Women Veterans, Incorporated comprises present and past military individuals with vast knowledge and resources in many
disciplines and fields; to include being trained and certified as Nuclear and Security Experts during an October 10th, 2010 summit by our nation’s
highest level Defense and Security Experts. We desire to spotlight our military in our community’s effort for providing at the local, grassroots levels
for education and training the residents of our urban communities. We have given over 50 Presidential Volunteer Community Service Awards for
over 300,000 hours of service and held various forums, roundtables and honoring ceremonies for our community, military and supporters.
We are seeking participants as volunteers for our Planning Committee; and sponsors at every level. Anyone who desires to support this agenda may
contact Cathy Santos at 215-834-4228 or email: nawv2006@hotmail.com
The National Alliance of Women Veterans, Incorporated is a 501 c3 tax exempt nonprofit public charity. Please support our military and veterans; any contributions
or donations are tax-deductible. Contributions statements are provided upon requests; please consider an online donation at www.nawvphilly.webs.com.
By a joint resolution approved December 18, 2001 (Public Law 107-89), the Congress has designated September 11 of each year as Patriot Day, and by Public
Law 111-13, approved April 21, 2009, has requested the observance of September 11 as an annually recognized National Day of Service and Remembrance.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, BARACK OBAMA, President of the United States of America, do hereby proclaim September 11, 2009, as Patriot Day and National
Day of Service and Remembrance. I call upon all departments, agencies, and instrumentalities of the United States to display the flag of the United States at
half-staff on Patriot Day and National Day of Service and Remembrance in honor of the individuals who lost their lives as a result of the terrorist attacks
against the United States that occurred on September 11, 2001. I invite the Governors of the United States and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico and
interested organizations and individuals to join in this observance. I call upon the people of the United States to participate in community service in honor of
those our Nation lost, to observe this day with other ceremonies and activities, including remembrance services, and to observe a moment of silence beginning
at 8:46 a.m. eastern daylight time to honor the innocent victims who perished as a result of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.
IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this tenth day of September, in the year of our Lord two thousand nine, and of the Independence of
the United States of America the two hundred and thirty-fourth. BARACK OBAMA
