We are living in a time of unbearable dissonance between promise and performance; between good politics and good policy; between professed and practiced family values; between racial creed and racial deed; between calls for community and rampant individualism and greed; and between our capacity to prevent and alleviate human deprivation and disease and our political and spiritual will to do so.

I've been struck by the upside-down priorities of the juvenile justice system. We are willing to spend the least amount of money to keep a kid at home, more to put him in a foster home and the most to institutionalize him.

Hereeeeeeeeeeeeees... Kathy’s Korner!

Every morning during our coffee break, my co-workers and I listened
to the culinary disasters of a newlywed colleague. We then tried to
share some helpful hints and recipes.

One day she asked us for step-by-step instructions on cooking sweet
potatoes - one of her husband's favorites. "I've finally been able to
make them sweet," she said, "but how do you make them orange?"

WORD-OF-THE-WEEK

Complement is a noun or verb that means something that completes or makes up a whole: “The red sweater is a perfect complement to the outfit.” Compliment is a noun or verb that means an expression of praise or admiration: “I received compliments about my new outfit.”

Greetings Coalition Family!

Inumerable unsolved murders of young black men in the city of Philadelphia in the year 2007, many cases with 0 leads and no hope of resolution. A police officer is killed during a taproom robbery; the suspect is custody less than two weeks later. Two retired policemen murdered and the suspect is behind bars within hours, with the police commissioner all but guaranteeing that when convicted, the suspect will never see the street again. A rookie police officer is shot, suspect taken into custody within the hour. The police make no secret that they pursue shooters of law enforcement agents with more vigor than they do shooters of the ‘average’ citizen, claiming that ‘If someone will shoot a cop, then the general public is in grave peril’. How much fertilizer is that? Police personnel in many cases have bulls-eyes on their backs simply because they have to deal with the negative elements of society, and therefore anger those who are already criminal-minded and the most likely in possession of firearms and of a temperament to use them. The ‘average’ citizen does not come into this kind of contact with this element of society! So that logic is extremely flawed!
Police vigorously pursue their attackers because they must make an example of them so that it never appears that law enforcement is vulnerable to successful attack. In the pursuit of a cop-killer, the commissioner stated “…money and time are not an object.” Wouldn’t it be a blessing if they felt that way about the ‘average’ citizen?

To protect and serve has no meaning in the community, it has no meaning because the slogan is not intended for us, it is directed at us. Take notice that the police departments all over this land are designed to keep the ‘average’ citizen in place. They are there to protect the interests of the powerful and affluent, those who are important to commerce. Have you ever been the victim of a break-in and had to wait an hour or more for the police to show up just to take a report? Ever had your vehicle broken into and had an unconcerned officer show up and fill out a report only to advise you that it is unlikely your property will ever be recovered? Ask yourself these questions, how long would it take for the police to respond to a break-in at Macy’s dept. store? What would be their posture if a Fed Ex truck were broken into on your block? These answers will dispel the myth that the police are here to serve the general populace and that they are overworked in our neighborhoods.

The police organization is in place to maintain the status quo, they are in place to make sure the interests and properties of the powerful and affluent are protected. The police make sure the powerbrokers sleep soundly at night.

HEALTH MATTERS

The Genesis Project XI

There is the Goldenseal root and there is the Goldenseal herb, the root is more potent. When the decision is made to use it, this root is used to dissipate mucus and to neutralize poisons(taken as needed; usually consumed not more than one week maximum).
Herbs work best in combination with other herbs. Goldenseal in combination with Echinacea gives great balance to the system. If one decides to use Goldenseal it’s important to understand that this herb is like the marines. It accomplishes the mission of cleansing. However during this process the action of Goldenseal, Mother Nature’s antibiotic, destroys bacteria good and bad. Therefore it is
important to replace the good bacteria with yogurt. Plain yogurt is preferable. The more sugar in the yogurt, as we find in most markets, the less potent the yogurt will be.
There are acidophilus capsules, also buttermilk or kefir will do the job as well. Goldenseal can be like a true friend, when you learn how to use it. In mild cases this root is a great way to start the cleansing process. For certain cases considered being more severe, the application of goldenseal is plausible at a specific point in time.

For the male and female organs saw palmetto is quite useful. Nettle, sarsaparilla, saw palmetto and bee pollen nourish the prostate. Black cohash, slippery elm and uvi-ursi have a healing effect on the uterus. Black cohash is also recommended for the thyroid as well as kelp, and the amino acid L-tyrosine that we find in fresh bee pollen.

Let’s not forget white willow bark, Mother Nature’s aspirin that reduces pain and inflammation. These are just a few herbs, and there are thousands, that can help along the transitional journey to what can be called “Health Wealth”(sm).
Each individual is challenged in a way as unique as the individual self. If one is filled with much waste, then the nature of that condition says make the transition a slow process. For women who are with child, don’t do anything drastic.  In this case the cleansing process should begin at least two or three months before conception.

Healing grace includes drinking the cleanest possible water, again eating salads and other green leafy vegetables should be considered. Extra virgin olive oil and a little lemon juice, with organic sesame tahini make a good salad dressing. For some tastes, balsamic vinegar or a soy cheese dressing work well. It’s a good idea to make extra virgin olive oil your butter, and in some cases almond butter or
peanut butter. We might recall the prophet Daniel ate salad at one point instead of eating the king’s dead meat diet. It is so important to remember the adage “moderation is the key”. Copyright Don Ringgold 2013

GRANTS, SCHOLARSHIPS & INSTRUCTION

United Way seeks applicants for Philly Roots Fellowship

United Way of Greater Philadelphia and Southern New Jersey has released an application to select 15 individuals to participate in the Philly Roots Fellowship.
The Philly Roots Initiative was developed by United Way and its partners in an attempt to systemically, yet creatively, ensure that young African American men graduate from high school and are college and career ready. The program equips formal and informal adult mentors with the tools they need to assist young men in achieving these goals.
  Eligible applicants include:
   * Individuals (coaches, community members, leaders of groups or small grassroots organizations) that have worked with the same group of at least five young black men in grades 6-12, for at least one year
   * Individuals who can commit to making a strong contribution to this emerging community of practice, and who will make a serious effort to increase the capacity and impact of their mentoring work and the broader Philadelphia community
   * Individuals who have been and will continue to do the work they’ve been doing regardless of whether there is funding or not, or whether they are being compensated to do it, and regardless of where they are employed. Individuals need not be employed or affiliated with a 501(c)(3) organization to apply.
Preference will be given to those applicants who can demonstrate that they are serving young black men in grades 6-12 at risk of dropping out of school, who attend schools on United Way’s Targeted Schools List.

Family Survival Inc. is a 501(c)3 organization provides cultural, educational, spiritual and economic tools needed to create a positive and lasting legacy within the African American community.

Family Survival Inc., a 501(c)3 organization, was founded by Brothers Rashie Abdul Samad and Rashie Abdur Rahim after realizing that the key to reclaiming the African American community lies in re-establishing connection with Africa, it's art, history, culture, economy and people.  The program started with exposing young people to the culture of African music and art, as well as learning the basics of business.  While the founding principles remain intact, the program has expanded by partnering with other community organizations and businesses in the spirit of umoja (unity) to ensure our collective Family Survival. Together, these organizations will make an even greater impact on the youth and elders in the community for the benefit of whole.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q: Are these manufacturer coupons or coupons that I print on my computer?

A: All of our coupons are actual manufacturer coupons. Fewer and fewer retailers accept coupons that are printed from your computer because of a huge increase in counterfeit coupons. Actual manufacturer coupons which we issue are accepted everywhere that coupons are accepted.

Q: Can these coupons be doubled?
A: Yes. These are manufacturer issued coupons and may be doubled in any store that offers double coupons.

Q: What are the face values and the expiration dates of these coupons?
A: Being manufacturer coupons, the manufacturer determines the face values of the coupons. We currently stock coupons ranging in value from 40 cents to 5.00 dollars. The coupon expiration dates are generally valid for 90 days.

Q: How can I use $1,000.00 worth of coupons in 90 days?
