A good piece of chocolate has about 200 calories. As I enjoy 2 servings per night, and a few more on weekends, I consume about 3,500 calories of chocolate in a week, which equals one pound of weight per week.

Therefore, in the last 3-1/2 years, I have had chocolate caloric intake of about 180 pounds, and I only weigh 165 pounds.

So ... without chocolate, I would have wasted away to nothing about 3 months ago! I owe my life to chocolate!

WORD-OF-THE-WEEK (words often confused or misused)

farther / further

Farther is an adjective and adverb that means to or at a more distant point: “We drove 50 miles today; tomorrow, we will travel 100 miles farther.” Further is an adjective and adverb that means to or at a greater extent or degree: “We won't be able to suggest a solution until we are further along in our evaluation of the problem.” It can also mean in addition or moreover: “They stated further that they would not change the policy.”

Greetings Coalition Family!

Most of us are aware of the pending Supreme Court decision on
legalizing gay marriage; this perplexes me as much as has the struggle

for civil rights from a government which has a history of rights denial.
It is no secret that the marriage institution in this country is in
terrible disarray, resulting in a more than 50% failure rate. As a
spiritual person, I feel no sense of propriety for this institution of marriage which has no basis in theology; it is a government controlled entity that simply allows 'Big Brother' further incursion into our personal lives. And if the wedding is the focus, doesn't everyone see the senselessness of the importance placed on the ceremony with little or no preparation dedicated to the actual union? The only advantages I see in legal marriage are the legal partnership and 'bragging rights'. I
think the purposes of a life union would be better served by a
refined partnership agreement, rather than a fight to board a sinking ship.

Just my honest unsolicited opinion.

HEALTH MATTERS

Olive oil lovers show lower stroke risk

By Amy Norton NEW YORK By Amy Norton NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Older people who use olive oil in their cooking and on their salads may have a lower risk of suffering a stroke, researchers reported Wednesday. In a study that followed older French adults for five years, researchers found that those who regularly used olive oil were 41 percent less likely to have a stroke than those who never used the oil. The findings, reported in the journal Neurology, hint that the well-known connection between olive oil and heart disease might extend to stroke as well. Olive oil is a key ingredient in the so-called Mediterranean diet. And some clinical trials have suggested that the diet helps control risk factors for heart disease, like high blood pressure, abdominal obesity and elevated levels of "bad" LDL cholesterol. High olive oil intake is also linked to a lower risk of heart attack, and a longer lifespan among heart attack survivors. These latest findings support the general advice that people replace dubious dietary fats -- namely, saturated fats and "trans" fats -- with olive oil and other unsaturated fats, according to an expert not involved in the study. But he also stressed that the study does not prove that olive oil, per se, helps prevent strokes.

"We need to remember that this is an observational study," said Dr. Nikolaos Scarmeas, a neurologist at Columbia University Medical Center in New York who wrote an editorial published with the study. The study found a correlation between people's olive oil use and their stroke risk, he told Reuters Health -- but that doesn't necessarily translate into cause-and-effect. "People who use a lot of olive oil may be very different from people who don't," Scarmeas said. Olive oil users may, for example, have higher incomes, eat better overall or exercise more often than people who never use the oil. The researchers on the new study, led by Cécilia Samieri of the French national research institute INSERM, tried to account for those differences. And after they did, olive oil was still linked to a lower stroke risk. But it's impossible to fully account for all those variables, Scarmeas noted. What's needed, he said, are clinical trials where people are randomly assigned to use olive oil or not, then followed over time to see who suffers a stroke. Such clinical trials are considered the "gold standard" of medical evidence.

The current study included 7,625 French adults age 65 and older who reported on their diets and other lifestyle factors. People who said they used olive oil for both cooking and as a dressing were considered "intensive users." Over the next five to six years, those intensive users suffered strokes at a rate of 0.3 percent per year. That compared with just over 0.5 percent among non-users, and 0.4 percent among moderate users. When the researchers factored in other diet habits, exercise levels and major risk factors for stroke -- like high blood pressure and diabetes -- heavy olive oil use was tied to 41 percent reduction in the odds of stroke. Samieri's team also took blood samples from another 1,245 older adults, measuring their levels of oleic acid -- a monounsaturated fat that accounts for most of the fatty acids in olive oil. The one-third of participants with the highest oleic acid levels were 73 percent less likely to suffer a stroke than the one-third with the lowest levels. The findings, according to Scarmeas, argue for more research into olive oil's potential benefits against not only heart disease, but stroke and other neurological diseases as well. For now, he suggested that people choose olive oil and other unsaturated fats over saturated fats (found largely in meat and dairy) and trans fats (found in some processed foods, like crackers, cookies and chips). "It's better to rely on this type of fat for your overall health," Scarmeas said. That said, no single food is consumed in isolation, he points out in his editorial. Olive oil is one part of the Mediterranean diet that has been tied to heart benefits. The diet also boasts plenty of fruits and vegetables, legumes, whole grains, fish and moderate amounts of red wine.

United Way seeks applicants for Philly Roots Fellowship

United Way of Greater Philadelphia and Southern New Jersey has released an application to select 15 individuals to participate in the Philly Roots Fellowship.
The Philly Roots Initiative was developed by United Way and its partners in an attempt to systemically, yet creatively, ensure that young African American men graduate from high school and are college and career ready. The program equips formal and informal adult mentors with the tools they need to assist young men in achieving these goals.
  Eligible applicants include:
   * Individuals (coaches, community members, leaders of groups or small grassroots organizations) that have worked with the same group of at least five young black men in grades 6-12, for at least one year
   * Individuals who can commit to making a strong contribution to this emerging community of practice, and who will make a serious effort to increase the capacity and impact of their mentoring work and the broader Philadelphia community
   * Individuals who have been and will continue to do the work they’ve been doing regardless of whether there is funding or not, or whether they are being compensated to do it, and regardless of where they are employed. Individuals need not be employed or affiliated with a 501(c)(3) organization to apply.
Preference will be given to those applicants who can demonstrate that they are serving young black men in grades 6-12 at risk of dropping out of school, who attend schools on United Way’s Targeted Schools List.

Education Campaign

The All- African People’s Revolutionary Unification Party is organizing an education campaign around the topic of, “The Development of Humanity; with an emphasis on Women, especially African Women.”

This will include understanding the “modes of production.” In the history of humanity there has been five major types of production relationships known to humanity: communalism, feudalism, capitalism, and socialism leading to communism. There is a severe lack of understanding about the modes of production because it is not taught in educational institutions. The reason it is so important to learn about the modes of production is:

1.                   &n bsp;      It deals with who is in power in society and therefore gives you the reasons why certain things are a certain way. It shows the necessity of struggling for power.

2.                   &n bsp;      It shows the most important changes in human development and gives people a weapon to affect change in the people’s interest.

3.                   &n bsp;      It shows that women were in the leadership of society for over 90% of humanities history.

4.                   &n bsp;      It shows that for over 90% of the history of humanity, human beings did not exploit and oppress each other and it refutes the idea was at war from the beginning.

5.                   &n bsp;      It shows when exploitation and oppression started and what it takes to get rid of exploitation and oppression.

6.                   &n bsp;      It shows the importance of human labor. It confirms that the people are the makers of history and not individuals and there is honor in being a common person.

7.                   &n bsp;      It gives an organized way of understanding history and is a liberating force for the people who learn it.

These are a few reasons to learn about the modes of production. The people who learn have a big responsibility to share and teach the information with as many other people as possible. We do not own the media or the educational institutions in the society so it is on us the powerless masses to get this information to the people. As a start we suggest reading the book, Class Struggle in Africa by Kwame Nkumah. The way to have the biggest impact is to read and discuss the book collectively.

History is a weapon. It can be used to inspire or demobilize the people. History in the hands of the masses of the people will be guided by the love of justice and truth. The masses of the people have never been the oppressors; they have been the oppressed. The masses have no reason to hide the truth, but someone who has oppressed the people does have a reason to hide the truth.

We call on all oppressed people to organize because organization is a potent weapon of the oppressed. Our goal is to become so organized that we can do in one day what previously took us 20 years. In order to do this everyone must join an organization that is working for the people.

Family Survival Inc. is a 501(c)3 organization provides cultural, educational, spiritual and economic tools needed to create a positive and lasting legacy within the African American community.

Family Survival Inc., a 501(c)3 organization, was founded by Brothers Rashie Abdul Samad and Rashie Abdur Rahim after realizing that the key to reclaiming the African American community lies in re-establishing connection with Africa, it's art, history, culture, economy and people.  The program started with exposing young people to the culture of African music and art, as well as learning the basics of business.  While the founding principles remain intact, the program has expanded by partnering with other community organizations and businesses in the spirit of umoja (unity) to ensure our collective Family Survival. Together, these organizations will make an even greater impact on the youth and elders in the community for the benefit of whole.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q: Are these manufacturer coupons or coupons that I print on my computer?

A: All of our coupons are actual manufacturer coupons. Fewer and fewer retailers accept coupons that are printed from your computer because of a huge increase in counterfeit coupons. Actual manufacturer coupons which we issue are accepted everywhere that coupons are accepted.

Q: Can these coupons be doubled?
A: Yes. These are manufacturer issued coupons and may be doubled in any store that offers double coupons.

Q: What are the face values and the expiration dates of these coupons?
A: Being manufacturer coupons, the manufacturer determines the face values of the coupons. We currently stock coupons ranging in value from 40 cents to 5.00 dollars. The coupon expiration dates are generally valid for 90 days.

Q: How can I use $1,000.00 worth of coupons in 90 days?
A: With our program, you get to choose the coupons you want, when you want them. This way you never have to worry about the coupons expiring.

Q: How do I choose the coupons I want?
A: Each coupon book contains coupon request slips which you fill out and send in. Those coupons are then mailed to you. ----- Coalition members! Activate ‘Your’ web link on The Coalition, Inc. web site -----
