When will we as progressive activists refuse to allow those who have opposing agendas to push our emotional buttons? “Although I understand the desire to purge our environment of symbols of the atrocities of the Afrikan Holocaust, I wish to bring to your conscious minds the fact that we only suffered under the confederate flag for four years, while we have been oppressed under the stars and stripes for more than four centuries.?” Our people are being murdered, starved, evicted, imprisoned by the thousands and we are distracted by someone’s choice of dress? 10th Annual Walk for Peace and Reconciliation
April 28th, 2013 2:00pm - 6:00pm

The Interfaith Peace Walk is a walking dialogue between Jews, Christians, Muslims, Buddhists, Hindus, Sikhs, Wiccans and others. Our theme this year is “Stewards of the Earth, Stewards of Each Other, Stewards of Peace.” Music, prayers, rituals and wisdom teachings will be featured at three houses of worship along the walk route. Refreshments and fellowship will follow at the final stop.

General Guidelines

• The Walk is a spiritual event and a "walking dialogue."  The back side of the program includes suggestions for meeting new people and entering into conversations while walking.

• The Walk is not a protest march or demonstration; therefore, please refrain from displaying any political signs or banners.  Groups participating together are encouraged to bring their group's banner.

• Please respectfully enter and leave each house of prayer in communal singing or silence.

• Please wear white to signify our unity with one another.  Dress comfortably and wear good walking shoes.  Please bring a non-disposable water bottle.

• People with colored armbands will be present as guides and ushers and available to answer any questions about Walk logistics.

• Please proceed to each location as a single group.

• Rest rooms are available at each location.  Ask one of the ushers for directions.

• The times listed are estimates and may vary based upon the conditions of the day.  We walk in rain or shine.

Bacteria trigger production of key immune cells

SINGAPORE (Reuters) - Allergies and autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis could one day be prevented by consuming a type of bacteria, like probiotics taken in yogurt...

The researchers fed mice with a family of bacteria and found that it triggered the production of certain white blood cells, called regulatory T cells.

"By increasing regulatory T cells, they will help suppress many of our allergies and autoimmune diseases," said one of the scientists, Kenya Honda, an immunology associate professor at the University of Tokyo.

Regulatory T cells are white blood cells that regulate the immune system and prevent it from excessive reactions.

When an immune system goes into an overdrive, it can cause allergies. It can also destroy healthy cells and tissues and cause autoimmune diseases like rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis or scaly skin, and Crohn's disease.

Honda and colleagues, who published their findings in the journal Science, used antibiotics to flush all bacteria from the guts of a group of mice.

They later fed the rodents 46 species of harmless Clostridium bacteria and found that regulatory T cells quickly returned to their colons.

"The 46 strains were isolated from healthy, conventionally reared mice," Honda said by telephone. "And the strains were sufficient for the induction of regulatory T cells in their colons."

The researchers next fed the bacteria to normal mice and found that it produced elevated levels of regulatory T cells in their colons. These normal mice were also able to ward off some allergies and colitis, an autoimmune disease, Honda said.

"We fed the clostridium species to normal, conventionally reared mice ... they had more regulatory T cells in their colons and they were resistant to colitis and other allergies," he said.

Looking ahead, Honda said experts can study the possibility of including live Clostridium bacteria in fermented foods.

"We may be able to use live Clostridium species in probiotics, like in yoghurt. If you drink Clostridium species, you may be able to

increase regulatory T cells in your intestines and your

allergic responses will be taken care of," he said.

Probiotics are live micro-organisms that are believed to be

good for their hosts.

There are many other strains of Clostridium and some are harmful, including one that causes tetanus and the Clostridium difficile, a drug-resistant superbug. But these were not in the cocktail of bacteria given to the mice.

United Way seeks applicants for Philly Roots Fellowship

   United Way of Greater Philadelphia and Southern New Jersey has released an application to select 15 individuals to participate in the Philly Roots Fellowship.
   The Philly Roots Initiative was developed by United Way and its partners in an attempt to systemically, yet creatively, ensure that young African American men graduate from high school and are college and career ready. The program equips formal and informal adult mentors with the tools they need to assist young men in achieving these goals.
  Eligible applicants include:
   * Individuals (coaches, community members, leaders of groups or small grassroots organizations) that have worked with the same group of at least five young black men in grades 6-12, for at least one year
   * Individuals who can commit to making a strong contribution to this emerging community of practice, and who will make a serious effort to increase the capacity and impact of their mentoring work and the broader Philadelphia community
   * Individuals who have been and will continue to do the work they’ve been doing regardless of whether there is funding or not, or whether they are being compensated to do it, and regardless of where they are employed. Individuals need not be employed or affiliated with a 501(c)(3) organization to apply.
   Preference will be given to those applicants who can demonstrate that they are serving young black men in grades 6-12 at risk of dropping out of school, who attend schools on United Way’s Targeted Schools List.

The Green Party of Philadelphia is both a political party and a grassroots political activist organization. All are welcome to join. We are an association of citizens who strive to make our city a more just and sustainable community. We work through education, direct action, and inclusive electoral politics.

Family Survival Inc. is a 501(c)3 organization provides cultural, educational, spiritual and economic tools needed to create a positive and lasting legacy within the African American community.
