Hereeeeeeeeeeeeees... Kathy’s Korner!

Have you ever been guilty of looking at others your
own age and thinking, "Surely I can't look that old"?

My name is Alice. One day as I was sitting in the
waiting room for my first appointment with a new
dentist I noticed his diploma on the wall, which bore
his full name. Suddenly I remembered a tall, handsome,
dark-haired boy with the same name who had been in my
high school class some 30-odd years ago. Could he be
the same guy that I had a secret crush on way back then?

Upon seeing him, however, I quickly discarded any such
thought. This balding, gray-haired man with the deeply-
lined face was way Too old to have been my classmate.

After he examined my teeth, I asked him anyway, "Did you
attend Schreiber High School?"

"Yes. Yes, I did. I'm a Bulldog," he gleamed with pride.

"When did you graduate?"

"In 1979. Why do you ask?"

"You were in my class!"

He looked at me closely. Then that ugly, Old, Bald, Wrinkled,
Fat, Gray-haired, Decrepit
Son-of-a-gun

Asked, "What did you teach???"

(Kathy Parsons is a regular contributor.)

WORD-OF-THE-WEEK (words often confused or misused)

Hope/Hopefully
The old school rule is you use hopefully only if you’re describing the way someone spoke, appeared, or acted.

•    Smart: I hope she says yes.
•    Wrong: Hopefully, she says yes.
•    Wrong: Hopefully, the weather will be good.
•    Smart: It is hoped that the weather cooperates.
•    Smart: She eyed the engagement ring hopefully.

Greetings Coalition Family!

FOOLS GOLD

The cash you have in your pocket or bank account is counterfeit! Paper money is virtually worthless! Originally it was intended to represent cached gold deposits. When initially issued, paper money was popularly rejected, no one trusted it. Paper money used to bear the promise that it could be redeemed for silver or gold, that lie is no longer told. As we have been sharing with you for many years, ‘precious metals and gems are intrinsically worthless, meaning it has no value to sustaining life. Presently when the economy is threatened, the powers-that-be simply print more paper to pay its’ debt. We are told that in a democracy, the people are the government, so how can this happen without the peoples consent? What is the response whenever the people utilize this method to address their debt? They are charged with a felony and punished! Demand for just compensation has triggered a gold panic, with suppliers offering to buy used jewelry at inflated prices; they will even buy the dental fillings from your mouth! There were once huge gold depositories in many country’s of the world, but most recently, business has been done on the promise of its existence, it does not exist. As with the stock market, countries just pass around paper representing imaginary commodities. Gold, as with paper money is only as precious as the value it is assigned. The richest continent on the planet (gold. Diamonds, oil, food) is in a constant state of political upheaval. Could this have an external origin?

HEALTH MATTERS

Bacteria trigger production of key immune cells

SINGAPORE (Reuters) - Allergies and autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis could one day be prevented by consuming a type of bacteria, like probiotics taken in yogurt...

The researchers fed mice with a family of bacteria and found that it triggered the production of certain white blood cells, called regulatory T cells.

"By increasing regulatory T cells, they will help suppress many of our allergies and autoimmune diseases," said one of the scientists, Kenya Honda, an immunology associate professor at the University of Tokyo.

Regulatory T cells are white blood cells that regulate the immune system and prevent it from excessive reactions.

When an immune system goes into an overdrive, it can cause allergies. It can also destroy healthy cells and tissues and cause autoimmune diseases like rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis or scaly skin, and Crohn's disease.

Honda and colleagues, who published their findings in the journal Science, used antibiotics to flush all bacteria from the guts of a group of mice.

They later fed the rodents 46 species of harmless Clostridium bacteria and found that regulatory T cells quickly returned to their colons.

"The 46 strains were isolated from healthy, conventionally reared mice," Honda said by telephone. "And the strains were sufficient for the induction of regulatory T cells in their colons."

The researchers next fed the bacteria to normal mice and found that it produced elevated levels of regulatory T cells in their colons. These normal mice were also able to ward off some allergies and colitis, an autoimmune disease, Honda said.

"We fed the clostridium species to normal, conventionally reared mice ... they had more regulatory T cells in their colons and they were resistant to colitis and other allergies," he said.

Looking ahead, Honda said experts can study the possibility of including live Clostridium bacteria in fermented foods.

"We may be able to use live Clostridium species in probiotics, like in yoghurt. If you drink Clostridium species, you may be able to

increase regulatory T cells in your intestines and your

allergic responses will be taken care of," he said.

Probiotics are live micro-organisms that are believed to be

good for their hosts.

There are many other strains of Clostridium and some are harmful, including one that causes tetanus and the Clostridium difficile, a drug-resistant superbug. But these were not in the cocktail of bacteria given to the mice.

GRANTS, SCHOLARSHIPS & INSTRUCTION

United Way seeks applicants for Philly Roots Fellowship

United Way of Greater Philadelphia and Southern New Jersey has released an application to select 15 individuals to participate in the Philly Roots Fellowship.
The Philly Roots Initiative was developed by United Way and its partners in an attempt to systemically, yet creatively, ensure that young African American men graduate from high school and are college and career ready. The program equips formal and informal adult mentors with the tools they need to assist young men in achieving these goals.
  Eligible applicants include:
   * Individuals (coaches, community members, leaders of groups or small grassroots organizations) that have worked with the same group of at least five young black men in grades 6-12, for at least one year
   * Individuals who can commit to making a strong contribution to this emerging community of practice, and who will make a serious effort to increase the capacity and impact of their mentoring work and the broader Philadelphia community
   * Individuals who have been and will continue to do the work they’ve been doing regardless of whether there is funding or not, or whether they are being compensated to do it, and regardless of where they are employed. Individuals need not be employed or affiliated with a 501(c)(3) organization to apply.
Preference will be given to those applicants who can demonstrate that they are serving young black men in grades 6-12 at risk of dropping out of school, who attend schools on United Way’s Targeted Schools List.

Family Survival Inc. is a 501(c)3 organization provides cultural, educational, spiritual and economic tools needed to create a positive and lasting legacy within the African American community.

Family Survival Inc., a 501(c)3 organization, was founded by Brothers Rashie Abdul Samad and Rashie Abdur Rahim after realizing that the key to reclaiming the African American community lies in re-establishing connection with Africa, it's art, history, culture, economy and people.  The program started with exposing young people to the culture of African music and art, as well as learning the basics of business.  While the founding principles remain intact, the program has expanded by partnering with other community organizations and businesses in the spirit of umoja (unity) to ensure our collective Family Survival. Together, these organizations will make an even greater impact on the youth and elders in the community for the benefit of whole.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q: Are these manufacturer coupons or coupons that I print on my computer?

A: All of our coupons are actual manufacturer coupons. Fewer and fewer retailers accept coupons that are printed from your computer because of a huge increase in counterfeit coupons. Actual manufacturer coupons which we issue are accepted everywhere that coupons are accepted.

Q: Can these coupons be doubled?
A: Yes. These are manufacturer issued coupons and may be doubled in any store that offers double coupons.

Q: What are the face values and the expiration dates of these coupons?
A: Being manufacturer coupons, the manufacturer determines the face values of the coupons. We currently stock coupons ranging in value from 40 cents to 5.00 dollars. The coupon expiration dates are generally valid for 90 days.

Q: How can I use $1,000.00 worth of coupons in 90 days?
