BLACK HISTORY MONTH As promised, we are featuring bio's and auto bio's of local folk who made many sacrifices to challenge the
corrupt systems they encountered. REFLECTIONS OF A YOUNG MILITANTby Richard J. Watson “ The 1960s brought about the most significant changes in my life than any other period since. The many challenges of the times, that brought about real growth, from teenager into manhood, will forever be cherished as my “political birthing.” My introduction to the Civil Rights Movement via the campaigns launched by the fierce leader of the Philadelphia NAACP, Cecil B. Moore, connected me to a group of people who became “family” for all times. The efforts for the integration of The Stephen Girard College for White Male Orphans brought together many young people who, otherwise, may have never crossed paths. We were known at that time (1965) as The Young Militants. We saw ourselves as young men and women who believed in ourselves, and the righteous causes that we supported. We continue even today to embrace those moments, and to support each other's dedication to the betterment of our communities. We go into schools, mentor young people who do not have the benefits of the facts of history that helped to open some of the doors that they have had a chance to walk through. And most of all, to pay tribute and honor our sisters and brothers in the struggle, who are no longer with us, our fallen heroes who should not go unrecognized for what they endured in the form of mental and physical abuse .The names of George Brower (Freedom George), Frank Haley (Freedom Frank), Stanley Vaughn, Barry Dawson, sister Bertha Brown, Roy Arnold, (Short-Shorts), Brother Zeke, Bro. Ulysses C. Grant, Bro. Reverend Dwight Eisenhower Campbell, Bro. Robert Brazzwell, Bro. Malichia Robinson, Sis. Birdie Palmer, Ms Susie Leacock and Mrs. Maude Robinson. There were many more upon whose shoulder we now stand. These were the die-hards, who would give it all, stop at nothing, to see the job through. In all kinds of weather, day and night, they were on duty! If only they could witness today, the fruits of their labors, they would be so relieved to know that they were all on the right path. Freedom, Justice and total equality for all people is still the struggle! We have come a long way, but we've got so much further to go. I can recall, as if it were yesterday, times spent with each and every one of the people I just mentioned. I can feel the presence of their contributions to the cause. We must all continue to hold fast to the goals that we focused upon over forty years ago, and to keep on keeping on. Our young people are in serious need of true and proper guidance. Strength lies in the family! Family is the root of the tree that will help us, African Americans, to flourish in a forest of undergrowth and vines and fossils of petrified residue that continues to thwart our development. Trust me, we are still not “out of the woods” We do not have to prove anything as a people. We have demonstrated time and time again that we are qualified, ready and able to get the job done. All that remains is that we “walk the walk”-and not just talk the talk! Reprinted Courtesy of

From the land where civilization began:
White House Photograph
REMARKS BY THE PRESIDENT
ON A NEW BEGINNING
Cairo, Egypt
June 4, 2009
All of us share this world for but a brief moment in time. The question is whether we spend that time focused on what pushes us apart, or whether we commit ourselves to an effort -- a sustained effort -- to find common ground, to focus on the future we seek for our children, and to respect the dignity of all human beings.
It's easier to start wars than to end them. It's easier to blame others than to look inward. It's easier to see what is different about someone than to find the things we share. But we should choose the right path, not just the easy path. There's one rule that lies at the heart of every religion -- that we do unto others as we would have them do unto us. (Applause.) This truth transcends nations and peoples -- a belief that isn't new; that isn't black or white or brown; that isn't Christian or Muslim or Jew. It's a belief that pulsed in the cradle of civilization, and that still beats in the hearts of billions around the world. It's a faith in other people, and it's what brought me here today.
We have the power to make the world we seek, but only if we have the courage to make a new beginning, keeping in mind what has been written.
The Holy Koran tells us: "O mankind! We have created you [from a] male and a female; and we have made you into nations and tribes so that you may know one another."
The Talmud tells us: "The whole of the Torah is for the purpose of promoting peace."
The Holy Bible tells us: "Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God." (Applause.)
The people of the world can live together in peace. We know that is God's vision. Now that must be our work here on Earth.
Thank you. And may God's peace be upon you. Thank you very much. Thank you. (Applause.)

A Universal Message from The Qur'an
049.010 YUSUFALI: The Believers are but a single Brotherhood: So make peace and reconciliation between your two (contending) brothers; and fear Allah, that ye may receive Mercy.
PICKTHAL: The believers are naught else than brothers. Therefore make peace between your brethren and observe your duty to Allah that haply ye may obtain mercy.
SHAKIR: The believers are but brethren, therefore make peace between your brethren and be careful of (your duty to) Allah that mercy may be had on you.
049.013 Y: O mankind! We created you from a single (pair) of a male and a female, and made you into nations and tribes, that ye may know each other (not that ye may despise each other). Verily the most honoured of you in the sight of Allah is (he who is) the most righteous of you. And Allah has full knowledge and is well acquainted (with all things).
P: O mankind! Lo! We have created you male and female, and have made you nations and tribes that ye may know one another. Lo! the noblest of you, in the sight of Allah, is the best in conduct. Lo! Allah is Knower, Aware.
S: O you men! surely We have created you of a male and a female, and made you tribes and families that you may know each other; surely the most honorable of you with Allah is the one among you most careful (of his duty); surely Allah is Knowing, Aware.
050.015 Y: Were We then weary with the first creation, that they should be in confused doubt about a new Creation?
P: Were We then worn out by the first creation? Yet they are in doubt about a new creation.
S: Were We then fatigued with the first creation? Yet are they in doubt with regard to a new creation.
050.016 Y: It was We Who created man, and We know what dark suggestions his soul makes to him: for We are nearer to him than (his) jugular vein.
P: We verily created man and We know what his soul whispereth to him, and We are nearer to him than his jugular vein.
S: And certainly We created man, and We know what his mind suggests to him, and We are nearer to him than his life-vein.
050.029 Y: "The Word changes not before Me, and I do not the least injustice to My Servants."
P: The sentence that cometh from Me cannot be changed, and I am in no wise a tyrant unto the slaves.
S: My word shall not be changed, nor am I in the least unjust to the servants.
050.030 Y: One Day We will ask Hell, "Art thou filled to the full?" It will say, "Are there any more (to come)?"
P: On the day when We say unto hell: Art thou filled? and it saith: Can there be more to come?
S: On the day that We will say to hell: Are you filled up? And it will say: Are there any more?
050.031 Y: And the Garden will be brought nigh to the Righteous,- no more a thing distant.
P: And the Garden is brought nigh for those who kept from evil, no longer distant.
S: And the garden shall be brought near to those who guard (against evil), not far off:
050.032 Y: (A voice will say:) "This is what was promised for you,- for every one who turned (to Allah) in sincere repentance, who kept (His Law),"
P: (And it is said): This is that which ye were promised. (It is) for every penitent and heedful one,
S: This is what you were promised, (it is) for every one who turns frequently (to Allah), keeps (His limits);
050.033 Y: "Who feared (Allah) Most Gracious Unseen, and brought a heart turned in devotion (to Him):"
P: Who feareth the Beneficent in secret and cometh with a contrite heart.
S: Who fears the Beneficent Allah in secret and comes with a penitent heart:
050.034 Y: "Enter ye therein in Peace and Security; this is a Day of Eternal Life!"
P: Enter it in peace. This is the day of immortality.
S: Enter it in peace, that is the day of abiding.
050.035 Y: There will be for them therein all that they wish, and more besides in Our Presence.
P: There they have all that they desire, and there is more with Us.
S: They have therein what they wish and with Us is more yet.
